Save the date: Presidential Inauguration
President Carlson will be inaugurated as Luther's 10th President on Friday, Oct. 10, at 3 p.m. The class schedule has been adjusted so that classes will end at 2:45 p.m.
September staff meeting
September's staff meeting agenda includes an enrollment update from Scot Schaeffer and a Q&A session with President Carlson. The meeting will be offered twice in Peace Dining Room to allow greater participation. The meetings are at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17, and 9 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 18. All staff are strongly encouraged to attend.

A note from the Student Philanthropy Council
Each fall, nearly 400 Luther students volunteer their time to call for Phonathon. These students connect with alumni, parents and friends, raising nearly $250,000 for the Luther College Annual Fund. The Annual Fund is a $1.8 million dollar effort that supports scholarships, academics and living at Luther.
Please take a moment during classes, meetings or activities to thank students who are volunteering. They make a huge difference for each and every one of us on campus. Without them, what we do would not be possible.
Registration for campus blood draw
Slots are now available for campus blood draws on Sept. 18 and 25, Oct. 2 and 16. Register online here. Cost for the general wellness blood draw is $35, the PSA is $40, and an A1C is $30. The fee must be paid at the blood screening, but will get reimbursed through Midwest Group Benefits. For those that are having their A1C checked, that will not be reimbursed through Luther and will have to go through your Flex. Those participating need to fast for 12 hours prior to the blood draw, but may drink water during the fast. Contact Vicky, <jaegervi>, for more information. Just a reminder that all Luther employees need to have a blood screen, physical and complete the Health Risk Assessment by the end of December to avoid a rise in their health insurance premium.
'Soup's On!' cooks needed
We are looking for volunteers to prepare a delicious soup for the upcoming "Soup's On!" events, an informal gathering of students, faculty, staff and Decorah community members, Oct. 2 and Jan. 22. Cooks are encouraged stay and enjoy the soup. These events are a lot of fun and a great chance to meet new, interesting individuals. If interested, please contact the Diversity Center, <dyerja01>.
Forensic speech/debate team seeks advisor
The Forensic Speech and Debate team is looking for a new advisor for the academic year. Responsibilities include reserving vehicles for tournaments, booking hotel rooms in the tournament host city and authorizing a check after receiving the invoice for entry fees. It's hard to believe, but Christmas at Luther ticketing is coming soon. Davis Projects for Peace call for proposals
Luther has been invited to participate in the summer 2015 Davis Projects for Peace. Luther students, working alone or in groups, interested in designing and implementing their own grassroots projects for peace, are encouraged to submit proposals of three pages or less by Jan. 12, 2015. Each project selected receives funding of $10,000. Family Weekend
Family Weekend 2014 is scheduled for Sept. 19-21. Check out the online schedule for event details. A small supply of hard copy brochures will be printed for distribution to parents and family members from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, Sept. 20, in the Union lobby. Speech and debate center now open
The Speech & Debate Center is now open to assist all members of the Luther community preparing oral presentations for class or other occasions. The SDC is staffed by upper-level Communication Studies students who are trained to help with audience analysis, thesis development and effective delivery. The Center is open in Preus Library Room 120, 5-10 p.m. Sunday-Thursday for walk-ins or by appointment through KATIE. Faculty are welcome to assign sessions at the SDC prior to speeches or group presentations in their classes, however appointments or prior arrangements are preferred if large numbers will be coming to the Center.

Women's Club starts new year
Luther College Woman's Club opens the academic year of programs and events Tuesday, Sept. 16, 1:30 p.m. in Peace Dining Room of Dahl Centennial Union. The opening event will include "The Local Food Hub: How it Works" program by Teresa Wiemerslage, music presentation by a Luther musician, the business meeting and refreshments. All are welcome.
Body toning class for staff
A body toning class will be offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 11:30 a.m. in the Regents Center Dance Studio for staff only. There will be different types of workouts and routines will change every couple of weeks in this half hour class. Starts Tuesday, Sept. 9. Kristin Swanson lectures on the book of Judges
In the first Paideia Texts and Issues lecture of the 2014-15 academic year, Kristin Swanson, professor of religion, will present the lecture "Transparency in the eye of the reader: How inner-biblical allusions make clear and obscure meaning(s) in the Book of Judges" at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, in the Center for Faith and Life. A reception held in Qualley Lounge will follow the lecture.
Tuesday Silent Meditation
Tuesday Silent Meditation takes place each Tuesday of the academic year at 5:15 p.m. in the Melanchthon Interfaith Room, CFL 205, starting Sept. 16. Sittings are led by Rev. Shoken Winecoff of the local Ryumonji Zen Monastery and Professors Gereon Kopf, Scott Hurley or Lee Zook. Email student coordinator DJ Simpson at <simpda02> with questions. Anita Carrasco will present "Autism and the barriers to becoming a 'participant' of 'culture'" at a brown bag lunch from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 18, in Mott. Her research was sponsored by the Doris and Ragnvald Ylvisaker Endowment for Faculty Growth. All are welcome.
Guest speaker: Ross Szabo 'Behind Happy Faces' Sept. 18
Mental health advocate, author and consultant Ross Szabo will present the lecture "Behind Happy Faces: Taking Charge of Your Mental Health" at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18, in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall. "Behind Happy Faces " educates audiences on mental illness, seeks to reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness and empowers those who are suffering to seek help. The lecture is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Faculty Artist Series: Benjamin Yates Sept. 19
Benjamin Yates will perform a trombone recital at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19, in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall. The recital is open to the public with no charge for admission. Yates will perform on alto, tenor and bass trombones. The recital features trombone and organ duo works and a varied program with works from the fourteenth century to the present.
Evasons mentalist mind reading duo
Join the internationally renowned Jeff and Tessa Evason in a mind-blowing evening of telepathy and showmanship when the Evasons Mentalist Mind Reading Duo take the stage at Marty's 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19. Tickets are $10 and may be purchased online or via the Luther Ticket Office.

Family weekend concerts
The Luther College Concert Band and Jazz Orchestra will perform a family weekend concert at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, in Main Hall of the Center for Faith and Life. Joan deAlbuquerque directs the Concert Band and Juan Tony Guzmàn directs the Jazz Orchestra. The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission.
The music department will present an evening of choral and instrumental music at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, as part of Family Weekend activities. The concert, in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall, is open to the public with no charge for admission. Seven ensembles will perform, including Aurora, Cantorei, Cathedral Choir, Collegiate Chorale, Norsemen, Wind and Percussion Ensemble and Varsity Band.
Luther College's Jazz Orchestra and Jazz Band will perform a family weekend concert at 8:45 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, in Marty's. Luther's Jazz Band is under the direction of Jon Ailabouni. Elkina piano duo
The critically acclaimed Elkina Piano Duo will perform a piano recital at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23, in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Music Hall. The duo's recital will focus on the works of Russian composers. The recital is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Faculty Artist Series: Kathryn Reed Sept. 26
Kathryn Reed will present a harpsichord recital at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26, in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Music Hall. The program features music from the French and Italian Baroque, including a solo harpsichord work, "Overture in the French Style" by J.S. Bach.
Alumnus Welo on display through Oct. 12
An exhibit featuring the etchings and drawings of Welo is on display on the upper level of the Center for Faith and Life through Oct. 12. His works are inspired by his surroundings, heavily influenced by where he lives.
Works from alumni artists and spouses on display
An exhibit featuring the works of reunion alumni artists and alumni spouses will be on display on the main floor of Preus Library through Oct. 12.
Faculty Artist Series: Carol Hester Sept. 27
Featuring works for flute and piano by Franz Schubert, Claude Debussy and Australian composer Carl Vine, Carol Hester will perform a flute recital at 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, in the Noble Recital Hall in Jenson-Noble Music Hall. The recital also features a work for solo flute by American composer Rhonda Larson and a work for alto flute and electronics by Armenian composer Eve Beglarian. The recital is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Underwater oil painting display through Sept. 29
Come enjoy a last taste of summer while viewing "Submerged," a collection of underwater oil paintings by Jennifer Fisher Jones on display through Sept. 29 at the Decorah Chamber of Commerce and the Decorah Public Library Mezzanine. The sleek streamline of accomplished Luther swimmers are depicted in several of her works. Sponsored by the Driftless Art Collective.

David and Becky Kamm are celebrating their 40th reunion year at Wartburg College with their first two-person art exhibit. "Double Vision" is comprised of David's print collages and Becky's art quilts. The show is on display in the Waldemar A. Schmidt Art Gallery through Oct. 22. A public reception is will be held from 6-8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17. All are welcome.
