President Carlson's Inauguration
The inauguration of Paula J. Carlson as the 10th president of Luther College will be held Friday, Oct. 10, during Luther's Homecoming weekend. The investiture ceremony, 3 p.m. in the Center for Faith and Life, is open to the public with no charge for admission. For those unable to attend the ceremony, the event will be live-streamed on the web. An Inaugural Reception in Bentdahl Commons will follow the ceremony.
Inaugural Symposium 'Exploring Faith and Literature' Oct. 10
At 11:15 a.m. Friday, Oct. 10, the college will host the Inaugural Symposium, "Exploring Faith and Literature," in the Noble Recital Hall. The symposium is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Panelists include President Paula J. Carlson; Jacqueline Bussie, director, Forum on Faith and Life and associate professor of religion, Concordia College; Peter Hawkins, professor of religion and literature, Yale Divinity School; the Rev. Jim Honig, senior pastor, Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church, Glen Ellyn, Illinois; and Robert D. Schultz, Luther class of 1974, the John P. Fishwick Professor of English, Roanoke College.
HR Director candidate open forums
Four finalists for the Human Resources director position will be interviewed on campus. Faculty and staff are encouraged to participate in the candidate open forums. The last forum is Monday, Oct. 13 in the CFL Recital Hall. Please return response forms to the Office of the President by noon on Oct. 14.

Alternative campus parking Oct. 9-10
To help accommodate the large number of guests expected for President Carlson's Inauguration Friday, Oct. 10, the following special event parking restrictions will be in effect from 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9 through 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10.
The entire lot behind the Library and the lot on the north side of Valders will be reserved for visitors. Faculty, staff and students are asked to find alternative parking during these times. Alternative lots include Farwell, Regents Center, Jenson and the City Pool Lot. Students may not park in faculty/staff spaces. In addition, the spaces generally reserved for visitors on the east side of the CFL will be posted as Handicapped Parking. Handicapped Parking spaces will be added on the west side of the CFL as well. Cooperation with these restrictions is greatly appreciated.
Emergency procedures booklet
Luther's Emergency Response Team is issuing a new Emergency Procedures book, and asks that faculty and staff recycle their old (blue cover) copies. Faculty and staff should place the new (orange cover) Emergency Procedures book in an easy-to-see and easy-to-reach place in their work station. Additional copies are available in Human Resources and Campus Safety and Security. The guide will also be available online at: http://www2.luther.edu/safety/
Homecoming 2014
Luther College will celebrate Homecoming 2014 Friday through Sunday, Oct. 10-12, bringing more than 5,000 students, alumni and friends of the college to campus for class reunions, sporting events, music, dance, theater and other events. No smoking on campus
The state of Iowa (Iowa Code 142D) prohibits smoking on campus. The college's smoke-free policy includes smoking devices such as e-cigarettes or vapor cigarettes as prohibited forms of smoking. The entire policy can be viewed on the web. Please remind any staff, faculty or students of this policy if it is broken. Direct any questions to the Human Resources Office 387-1415.

Career Center calls for internship stories
The Career Center site has a new webpage, Internship Stories, to highlight the variety of internship opportunities available to Luther students. Storytelling is a great way to increase website visitors' interest in our programs and keep visitors on our website. October staff meeting
The October staff meeting agenda includes a financial update, health care and benefits, and Title IX reporting requirements. The meeting will be offered twice in Peace Dining Room: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, and 9 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, All staff are strongly encouraged to attend one of the sessions.
Archives open hours in October
The Archives will be open to Homecoming visitors on Oct. 9-10. For the rest of October, the Archives Reading Room will be open by appointment only. Fire prevention week: learn to use an extinguisher
Fire Prevention Week is Oct. 6-12. Learn how to use a fire extinguisher properly with our extinguisher simulator. Erik Stoen will be on the main floor of the Dahl Centennial Union from 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Oct. 8 and 14 to assist with demonstrations.

Fall career fair
The fall career fair runs from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7 in the Union. This is the largest fall fair ever held on campus. More than 40 organizations attend to visit with students about various internships, part-time and full-time opportunities. A list of those attending can be viewed on the Career Center web page.
SAC present 'The Buried Life'
SAC invites the community to come hear four young men relay their adventure "The Buried Life – What do you want to do before you die?" at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7, in Valders Room 206 on the Luther campus. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the door. The Buried Life originated in 2006 when four Canadians: Dave Lingwood, Ben Nemtin, Duncan Penn and Jonnie Penn set out in an old RV to complete their list of "100 Things We Want To Do Before We Die." The group pulled a borrowed 1957 Dodge Coachman RV out of a field; bought a secondhand camera for $100 on eBay, threw a party to raise money for gas and hit the road for two weeks to see how many items they could check off their list.
FAS: 'Music in the Shape of a Pear' concert series features music by alumni composers
Marking the 10th anniversary since its inception as a concert series, Luther College's "Music in the Shape of a Pear" will present a concert featuring music composed by graduates of Luther's composition program at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9, in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Music Hall on the Luther campus. The performance is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Jazz Band and Jazz Orchestra performance Oct. 10
Luther College Jazz Band and Jazz Orchestra will perform at 8:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10, in Marty's in the Dahl Centennial Union on Luther's campus.
The performance is open to the public with no charge for admission. For those unable to attend, the performance will be streamed at kwlc.luther.edu and carried on 1240am starting at 10 p.m.
Luther's Jazz Band is under the direction of Jon Ailabouni, and the Jazz Orchestra is under the direction of Juan Tony Guzmán.
'A Thread in the Dark'
The Visual and Performing Art department presents "A Thread in the Dark" by Hella Haasse. The performances, held in the Jewel Theatre are at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9; 9:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10; and 1:30 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11. Three alumni honored with Distinguished Service Award
President Paula J. Carlson will present Luther's Distinguished Service Award to three alumni Friday, Oct. 10, at the Alumni Dinner and Celebration of Distinguished Service. The celebration will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the dining hall. Tickets are $25 and available at http://luther.edu/homecoming/
Qualley Papyri exhibit opening
The program for the formal opening of the Qualley Papyri exhibit is 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, in the Hovde Room of Preus Library. Assistant Professor of Classical Studies and Papyrological Archivist Brendan Haug of the University of Michigan will speak on the history of the archaeological site of Karanis, Egypt. Dan Davis of the Luther College faculty and Luther student Marshall Stay will report on their current archaeological activities. The program is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Book signings during homecoming
The Book Shop will host book signing sessions Saturday, Oct. 11, as part of Luther's homecoming weekend of events. Christopher Cudworth, Julie Bowe, David Ellingson, sisters Jodi Tollefson Bjerke, Kari Tollefson Espinosa, and Kristi Tollefson Wolf, Jerry Johnson, and Norman Omodt will sign copies of their books at the Book Shop.
SAC presents Inaugural Ball
Student Activities Council invites the public to this year's Flamingo Ball, transformed into "The Inaugural Ball," to welcome President Paula Carlson, along with her friends and family, to the Decorah and Luther communities. Come celebrate and dance to the sounds of variety band The Sevilles at 9 p.m. homecoming Saturday, Oct. 11, in the Main Gym of the Regents Center.

Jyoti Grewal to speak at Luther Oct. 13-14
Violence, in its many forms, has remained constant throughout history. Activists, educators, and leaders have sought to end violence through raising awareness. The Luther College campus welcomes the return of former Luther professor Jyoti Grewal, Ph.D., for a guest lecture to aide in the education and exposure of violence around the world.
Hosted by the Women and Gender Studies department, Grewal's "Public Performances of Violence: Problematizing Analyses of Sexual Violence Against Women in North India" will take place at 4:15 p.m. Monday, Oct. 13, in the Olin Building Room 102.
Grewal will also hold a discussion group with the theme "women and leadership" at a brown bag lunch at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14 in the Mott Room of the Dahl Centennial Union.
Concert Organist Carole Terry Oct. 14
Carole Terry, guest concert organist, will present a concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, in the Main Hall of the CFL. The concert is being presented as Luther's annual Benefactor Organ Recital, which features outstanding artists of international caliber performing on the college's Robert Sipe mechanical action organ.
Nelson Mandela biographer to lecture
Charlene Smith will present a series of lectures on the Luther campus. Smith's first lecture, "Every 26 Seconds a Woman is Raped: Last Thursday was my Turn," will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15. On Thursday, Oct. 16, she will present three lectures:
FAS: Karen Kanakis to perform voice recital Oct. 15
Karen Kanakis will present a voice recital at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, in the Noble Recital Hall. Accompanying Kanakis on the performance is Jessica Paul. The program features music sung entirely in Italian by various composers including Franz Liszt, Giuseppe Verdi, Paolo Tosti, Gioachino Rossini and Reynaldo Hahn.

Art faculty art on display through Oct. 17
A diverse exhibit featuring works by Luther College Art Program faculty is on display in the Kirstin Wigley-Fleming Fine Arts Gallery through Oct. 17. A gallery reception will be held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, in the Wigley-Fleming Gallery. Faculty artists include Ben Moore, Joe Madrigal, Lea Donhowe, Aaron Lurth and David Kamm. Other artists include emeritus Harley Refsal and sabbatical replacement Justin Sorensen.
Nordic Choir to perform Fall concert Nov. 2
The Nordic Choir will perform in concert at 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 2 in the CFL. The concert, open to the public with no charge for admission, is part of a precursor tour for the Nordic Choir's 2015 Midwest Tour. The choir tours annually and has performed around the world, appearing in Norway, England, Germany, Russia, Poland, Hungary, Romania, the Baltic countries, Mexico and the Caribbean.

Alison Dwyer, wife of Philip Freeman, has been undergoing diagnosis and treatment at Mayo. She is back in Decorah, but has to go back to Rochester daily for radiation treatment for two weeks. Brooke Joyce's chamber work "Six Degrees of Separation" was performed by the Aura Ensemble at the University of Houston on Monday, Sept. 29. A short video with an excerpt of the work is here.
Jane Hawley will present at "Fostering the Future: Higher Education Dance Curriculum Development Sessions" hosted by Movement Research and Tisch at New York University, Oct. 8-11. Invited participants include forward-thinking, creative leaders already re-framing dance in higher education. Hawley is one of 35 invited dance artists, scholars and educators from the U.S. and presents the Movement Fundamentals curriculum of the dance program at Luther College.
Andy Hageman's short essay "Karel Čapek Energies: The Absolute at Large as Proto-Cli-Fi Literature" is scheduled to go live on Oct. 6 in the open access online forum for science fiction studies, Deletion (Episode 7: Retrospective Futures).
J. R. Christianson has learned that the Royal Library in Copenhagen wants to acquire his manuscripts and papers associated with research on Tycho Brahe (1546-1601), the Danish astronomer of the Renaissance. Tycho's own observational manuscripts and the papers of many scholars who have researched Tycho Brahe in the last 400 years are in the Royal Library.
David Kamm has been selected to present a mixed-media work title ".40 Caliber Safety Crayons," for the show "Lines Drawn" at the Charles Krause/Reporting Fine Arts Gallery in Washington, DC. Krause was an award-winning foreign correspondent who now promotes artists and art that address social and political themes. Additional information can be found on the website.
