Tuition Benefit Program deadline Nov. 1

Career Center calls for internship stories
The Career Center site has a new webpage, Internship Stories, to highlight the variety of internship opportunities available to Luther students. Storytelling is a great way to increase website visitors' interest in our programs and keep visitors on our website. If you know of additional internship stories that we can include either on this page or on individual academic department sites, please contact Tabita Green.
October staff meeting
The October staff meeting agenda includes a financial update, health care and benefits and Title IX reporting requirements. The meeting will be offered twice in Peace Dining Room: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, and 9 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 16. All staff are strongly encouraged to attend one of the sessions.
Archives open hours in October
For the rest of October, the Archives Reading Room will be open by appointment only. Staff will continue to monitor phone and email contacts. To make an appointment, contact Sarah Wicks at 387-1606 or send an email to <archives>. We will respond to requests for appointments and services as promptly as we are able. Thank you for your patience during this transitional period.
United Way donations
It's not too late! Donate to United Way and be entered into the drawings for prizes. For those who have donated already, thank you. We have raised over $13,000 so far. Turn forms in to HR by Oct. 15 to be eligible for prizes. Prizes include: an extra vacation day, Peace Brunch tickets, Center Stage Series tickets, massages and a gift certificate from the Book Shop. Health assessment risk
Remember to complete the Health Risk Assessment, one of the steps necessary to avoid an increase in health care premiums in 2015. The username is your last name and the initial password are the last four digits of your social security number.

Fire extinguisher demo
A fire extinguisher demo will be hosted by Campus Security and Wellness from 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14 on the main floor of the Union. Learn how to use a fire extinguisher correctly and a drawing for a home fire extinguisher. This past week's winner was Kathy Euans.
Flu clinic
A Flu vaccination clinic will be held Friday, Oct. 17 from 8:30-11:30 a.m. outside of Marty's in the Union. Students, staff, faculty and significant others of staff/faculty may attend. Cost is $25 for the injection and $30 for the flu mist. Staff/Faculty can take receipts to HR (if on the Luther insurance plan) for reimbursement.
Fertilization of grounds
The lawns on the upper campus will be fertilized and spot treated for broadleaf weeds, especially along sidewalks and curbs, beginning Friday, Oct. 17. The fertilization process will begin during the day on Friday and spraying will take place after 5 p.m. and continue throughout the weekend, weather permitting. This procedure is in keeping with Luther's turf management policy. Contact Gary Brickman, 387-1668, for a copy of the policy.

Help.luther.edu upgrade
Help.luther.edu is being upgraded on Sunday, Oct. 19. It is used by Luther faculty, staff and students to submit requests online to LIS, Web Content, and Email Marketing. With the upgrade comes a complete overhaul of the look and feel as well as increased functionality. Two open training sessions will be held to help familiarize the community with the new look. The first training session is from 2-2:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 20 and the second training session is from 10-10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21. Both sessions will take place in Main 113. Campus network maintenance Oct. 20-21
Beginning at 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 20 and Tuesday, Oct. 21, the campus network will undergo maintenance. On Monday, This maintenance will increase the available bandwidth between the campus network and our firewall. During the maintenance, Luther services will be available from the Internet, but users on campus will not be able to access the Internet or Luther servers. On Tuesday, the wireless network will be down, but wired connections will remain working. Service will be restored prior to 7:30 a.m. both mornings.

Jyoti Grewal to host brown bag discussion on Oct. 14
Luther College welcomes the return of former Luther professor Jyoti Grewal, Ph.D., for a guest lecture to aide in the education and exposure of violence around the world, particularly sexual violence against women in North India. Hosted by the Women and Gender Studies department, Grewal will hold a discussion group with the theme "women and leadership" at a brown bag lunch at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14 in the Mott Room of the Union.
Concert Organist Carole Terry Oct. 14
Carole Terry, guest concert organist, will present a concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, in the Main Hall of the CFL. The concert is being presented as Luther's annual Benefactor Organ Recital, which features outstanding artists of international caliber performing on the college's Robert Sipe mechanical action organ. Terry will perform Praeludium in E Major by Dietrich Buxtehude, two works by Bach, a Felix Mendelssohn sonata, "Deuxiéme Fantasie" by Jehan Alain, "Clair de Lune" by Jehan Alain and Introduction and Passsacaglia to "Schönberger Orgelalbum" by Max Reger.
Nelson Mandela biographer to lecture
Charlene Smith will present a series of lectures on the Luther campus. Smith's first lecture, "Every 26 Seconds a Woman is Raped: Last Thursday was my Turn," will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15. On Thursday, Oct. 16, she will present three lectures:
Smith is an authorized biographer for Nelson Mandela, experienced trauma counselor for HIV and AIDS, and gender violence and took part in the underground resistance against apartheid. All lectures will take place in Valders Hall of Science Room 206, and are open to the public with no charge for admission.
CANCELLED: Karen Kanakis voice recital Oct. 15
Karen Kanakis' voice recital, originally scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, in the Noble Recital Hall, has been canceled. Information on a reschedule date will be posted as it becomes available.

Art faculty art on display through Oct. 17
A diverse exhibit featuring works by Luther College Art Program faculty is on display in the Kirstin Wigley-Fleming Fine Arts Gallery through Oct. 17. Faculty artists include Ben Moore, Joe Madrigal, Lea Donhowe, Aaron Lurth and David Kamm. Other artists include emeritus Harley Refsal and sabbatical replacement Justin Sorensen.
Women's Club meeting
The Luther College Woman's Club meets in the Peace dining room at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21. The presenter at this meeting is Luther graduate David Rooney, Winneshiek Medical Center Clinic Administrator. The topic of the meeting is "A Century of Caring: Winneshiek County Hospital Historical Perspective." Special music, a short business meeting and refreshments and social time will all be included in the agenda. All are welcome.
FAS: Heather Armstong Oct. 23
Heather Armstrong will perform an oboe recital featuring music inspired by poetry, ideas and images related to the natural world at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, in the Noble Recital Hall. The recital is open to the public with no charge for admission. Collaborating on the recital are Luther faculty members Xiao Hu, piano and Spencer Martin, viola.

A visionary for intercultural understanding in the modern world, bestselling author Marjane Satrapi brings her unique worldview to Luther College in the onstage conversation "Graphic Freedom" at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, in the CFL. Offering a distinctive take on women's needs internationally and an appreciation for culture and art, she discusses what connects us across humanity and shares her feelings on the broader issues of religion and cultural understanding. Part of Luther's Distinguished Lecture Series, the event is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Scandinvian Music - Live at Bethania Church Oct. 27
Vesterheim Museum, with support of the Dean's Office, will present a concert on Monday, Oct. 27, at the Bethania Church across from Vesterheim Museum. The U.S. group "Andrea and Lydia," has an energetic and engaging program of traditional music on fiddle, five-string fiddle, nyckelharpa and voice, including waltzes, schottises, polskas and more. Doors open at 7 p.m. with music starting at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $12 at the door. Luther College students can get in free with a Luther student ID.
Bargain Barn sale Oct. 30
A Bargain Barn Sale is coming up! Come to the Red (Jewel) Barn between 5-6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30 for the fall sale. Inventory items include some of the usual items that the college no longer has need for but are still in good condition. Nordic Choir to perform Fall concert Nov. 2
The Nordic Choir will perform in concert at 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 2 in the CFL. The concert, open to the public with no charge for admission, is part of a precursor tour for the Nordic Choir's 2015 Midwest Tour. The choir tours annually and has performed around the world, appearing in Norway, England, Germany, Russia, Poland, Hungary, Romania, the Baltic countries, Mexico and the Caribbean.
Lunch hour yoga series: second session
Join Molly Lesmeister for a six week yoga session starting Oct. 27-Dec. 11 (no class Nov. 24 or 27). Two class options offered: Monday at 11:30 a.m. and Thursday at 12:45 p.m. Sign up for one class a week, or both! Beginners welcome. Class will be held in Studio II of the CFA. Props provided, no experience necessary. Registration is $18 for one class per week and $36 for two classes per week. Jubilize! singing group has moved locations
Jubilize! is a drop-in singing circle that takes place every Tuesday from 9:45-10:45 a.m. The new location for the community sing is the CFA atrium. Every voice is welcome. All songs taught in the oral tradition by song leader Liz Rog. This event is sponsored by the Wellness Program.
