Christmas Cheer sponsored by SAC
As the holiday season approaches, departments at Luther can sponsor families for Christmas Cheer. SAC will assign one or more families to a department, and each department will have the opportunity to shop for Christmas presents for that family. In mid-December, there will be a collection day in Marty's where wrapped gifts can be dropped off in order to be delivered to sponsored families. Sign up on this Google form. Please fill it out as soon as possible. SAC will assign families soon in order to allow plenty of time for shopping. Contact <sacservice> with questions.
Call for abstracts
Students are invited to submit abstracts for the 2015 National Conference on Undergraduate Research. Luther will provide support for selected students to present at NCUR. The conference is April 16-18, 2015, at Eastern Washington University. Applications for the on-campus selection process are due by 5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 10. Please apply online.

D.E.A.L. - Diet and Exercise Affect Lifestyle.
DEAL will be November’s Wellness main program. DEAL is similar to Yahtzee but incorporates physical activity. Its purpose is to show that being healthy in today’s world is not a challenge. In fact, it is quite easy and will leave a great feeling afterward. Groups of three are needed in order to participate. The three groups with the highest points will get prizes. Title IX town hall meeting
Please attend the Title IX Town Hall meeting from 1-2 p.m. in Mott Thursday, Oct. 30. Important information about Title IX responsibilities and reporting obligations for faculty and staff will be presented as well as time allotted for questions and answers.
Flu shot announcements
There will be an additional flu clinic from 2:15-4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 4, in the Regents Center Room 221. Students may apply the charge to their accounts. Staff/faculty and significant others should pay at time of service. Cost is $25 for shot, $30 for mist.
Flu vaccines are available at Health Service, 1:15-4:15 p.m Mondays and 8:15-11:45 a.m. Fridays. Walk-ins are welcomed. The vaccination is available while supplies last. If these times do not work, call Health Service, 387-1045, to schedule.
Massage therapist available in Health Services
Health Services would like to remind faculty, staff and students that there is a massage therapist available in Health Services Monday-Friday. Please call Health Service, 387-1045, to schedule an appointment. Cost is $50/hour for students and $60/hour for staff and faculty.

Art exhibit: Susan Chrysler White Oct. 24-Dec. 12
Recently awarded the Collegiate Scholar ranking at the University of Iowa, School of Art, recognizing newly promoted faculty members who excel in both teaching and creative work, Susan Chrysler White, professor of painting at the University of Iowa, will feature her new paintings in an exhibit titled "Flash Point" in the Kristin Wigley-Fleming Fine Arts Gallery in the Center for the Arts on the Luther campus Oct. 24 – Dec. 12.
Guest Recital: Calliope Duo to perform at Luther Oct. 28
The Calliope Duo, featuring Elizabeth McNutt, flute, and Shannon Wettstein, piano, will perform a guest recital at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28, in the Noble Recital Hall. The performance is open to the public with no charge for admission and features recent solo and chamber works by Mario Lavista, José-Luis Hurtado, Arturo Furentes, Carlos Sanchez-Gutierrez and a world premiere by Iowa composer, Harvey Sollberger.
Bargain Barn sale Oct. 30
A Bargain Barn Sale is coming up. Come to the Red (Jewell) Barn between 5-6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30, for the fall sale. Inventory items include some of the usual items that the college no longer has need for but are still in good condition. Religion forum series Oct. 30
Luther's religion department invites the community to their first forum for 2014-2015, "Teaching Religion at a College of the Church." The forum is at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30, in Olin 102 and includes a panel of faculty to facilitate conversations and understanding on what it means to teach biblical studies at an ELCA college. The panel includes Sean Burke, Guy Nave, Karla Suomala and Kristin Swanson. All are welcome.
Book shop events Oct. 28 and 31
Join Mark McAllister, author of "Red Rover," in the Book Shop from 4-4:45 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28 for casual conversation and a book signing. The book is available for purchase in the Book Shop for $11.95.
It's soooo scaary! The 80s are back! Join us all day in the Book Shop on Friday, Oct. 31 as we offer "gnarly" 80s prices on selected clothing and imprinted items and play "name that 80s tune" to win a "bodacious" treat! Come in a "rad" costume and win a "totally awesome" prize.
Residence hall trick-or-treating Oct. 31
Luther community members and their families are invited to Trick-or-Treat in the first-year residence halls: Brandt, Olson and Ylvisaker. Trick-or-treating will take place in the halls from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31. Participating rooms will be identified by a pumpkin on the door. There will also be games, crafts and cookie decorating. Come join the fun where the weather is always nice.
FAS: Brad Schultz to perform Halloween-themed organ recital Oct. 31
Brad Schultz, Luther College visiting instructor in music, will perform a Halloween-themed organ recital at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31, in the Main Hall of the Center for Faith and Life on the Luther campus. Schultz, performing as Count Dracula, encourages attendees to come in costume. The recital is open to the public with no charge for admission. A candy reception will be held in the lobby following the performance.
Luther presents Faculty Research Symposium Nov. 1
Luther invites the community to participate in the Faculty Research Symposium starting at 9 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, in Valders Hall of Science Room 206. Panels will continue throughout the day in Valders Room 206 and in the Franklin W. Olin Building Room 102. The event is open to the public, with no charge for admission.

Emily Tope '15, from La Crosse, Wisconsin, will perform a cello recital at noon Saturday, Nov. 1.
Benjamin Henson '16, from Herrin, Illinois, will perform a violin recital at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1.
Peter Swanson '16, from Duluth, Minnesota, will perform a cello recital at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1.
Jakob Jorgenson '16, from Stillwater, Minnesota, will perform a trumpet recital at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 2.

Buckthorn Blitz 2014
Come help remove buckthorn from Luther's natural areas from 1-3:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 2. Buckthorn is an invasive shrub that crowds out native biodiversity and makes it difficult for native plants, birds and insects to survive. Meet at the trail entrance from Anderson prairie to Hickory Ridge Woods. Work gloves and tools will be provided. Wear sturdy shoes, long sleeves, and long pants. Bring water and a friend. Questions? Nordic Choir to perform Fall concert Nov. 2
Nordic Choir will perform in concert at 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 2, in the CFL. The concert, open to the public with no charge for admission, is part of a precursor tour for the Nordic Choir's 2015 Midwest Tour. The choir tours annually and has performed around the world, appearing in Norway, England, Germany, Russia, Poland, Hungary, Romania, the Baltic countries, Mexico and the Caribbean.
All Saints Day Chapel Nov. 3
Faculty, staff and students are invited to All Saints Day Chapel at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 3, in the CFL Main Hall. Join the community celebrating new saints born or adopted into our community and grieving the loss of loved ones entrusted to God's care. All are invited to come forward and light candles in memory or honor of those they remember.

Tired of buying expensive, over-salted, boxed stock for soups? Why not learn to make your own? Join Johanna Bergan on Thursday, Nov. 6 during shadow block to learn how to make homemade stock that will add flavor and flair to any soup. Please pre-register online. Class will be held in Valders 379.
Art Song Jamboree Nov. 10
The first Song Jam of the 2014-15 Art Song Jamboree series will be held at 5:15 p.m. Monday, Nov. 10, in the Recital Hall of the CFL. The Art Song Jamboree concerts are open to the public with no charge for admission.
Knitters needed at 'Soup's On!' event Nov. 13

Luther's Nordic Choir releases new album 'Prayer'
Nordic Choir recently released their newest album, "Prayer." The new album features selections performed during the tours of the 2013-14 academic year. The title track is an arrangement by acclaimed choral composer René Clausen. Other pieces featured include "I Have Called You By Name" by Stephen Paulus and the Nordic Choir traditional closing piece "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross" arranged by Gilbert Martin.
Pilates class
Pilates for faculty and staff will start Session II Wednesday, Oct. 29. The session will run six weeks with no class Wednesday, Nov. 26. Session II concludes with the last class on Wednesday, Dec. 10. The class meets in the CFA dance studio on Wednesdays from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and the cost is $24 due on the first day of class. Complete four of the six sessions to receive a $25 Luther gift card.

Strengths pilot program coordinator-internal candidates: The Career Center has an immediate "gift-funded" opening for a part-time on-campus Strengths pilot program coordinator position (.42 FTE, 20 hours/week, 10 months). Primary responsibilities include leading a J-term student conference; supervising work-study students; coordinating and providing student/faculty/staff workshops; marketing program efforts to stakeholders; organizing shared Google Drive folders; securing program resources; and evaluating/documenting/
Reunion giving officer-internal candidates: Engages alumni through independent donor connections and also through a volunteer reunion committee structure to advance philanthropic interests in Luther. Primary responsibility is to cultivate and solicit donors and prospective donors regionally and nationally through personal visits and event contacts within the context of class reunion planning and giving, working primarily with the 35-year and 40-year reunion classes. Qualified internal candidates will have the bachelor's degree and a minimum of two years of demonstrated work experience in development or a related area. The week of Oct. 13 admissions had 443 students visit campus. When we include their guests, we had more than 1,000 visitors on campus. This is the greatest number of visitors we have ever had in one week during the academic year. We have received very positive comments on their visit experience and couldn't have done it without the support of the entire Luther community. ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS, ETC.
Nick Rauch '15, attended the American Marketing Association held at Aurora University, Oct. 17. Nick won the Sports Promotion Competition, competing against 20 other entrants. The conference was attended by more than 300 students from 35 universities and colleges, along with 60 marketing professionals.
Andy Hageman published the short essay "Space-Alien Space" and a follow-up commentary as part of a roundtable on the film "Under the Skin" in the Science Fiction Research Association Review, #310.
Willard Linnevold '37, of Decorah, Iowa, was the 2014 recipient of the Dr. Carlo A. Sperati Award for distinguished achievement in the fields of teaching and conducting. Linnevold was recognized for his work as an outstanding educator and conductor.
James Johnson '75, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, was the 2014 recipient of the Weston Noble Choral Award for distinguished achievement in the fields of teaching and conducting. Johnson was recognized for his work as an outstanding educator and conductor.
Caleb Sander '15, of Newton, Iowa, was the 2014 recipient of the Presser Award for his breadth and depth of musical offerings that testify to the college's legacy of musical excellence inspired by faith.
Keith Lesmeister and Zora Hurst '17 were featured artists at the NewBo PoJam in Cedar Rapids on Oct. 11. Hosted by SPT Theater, Hurst performed three original poems, while Lesmeister presented two personal vignettes.
Krista Konrad '15, Danielle Uhlenhake '15, and Kari Ylvisaker '15 presented a workshop titled "Mathematical Practices: The Habits of Doing Math" on Oct. 22 at the Iowa Council of Teachers of Mathematics Math & Science annual conference.
Jeannette Pillsbury presented the workshop "Mathematical Practices: Process and Efficiency--An Introduction" at the Iowa Conference of Mathematics pre-conference for pre-service teachers on Oct. 21.

Sunday, Nov. 2 is the end of Daylight Savings Time. Don't forget to set your clocks back an hour!
A little known fact about the ending date of Daylight Savings from Acurite.com:
"Through 2006, Daylight Saving Time in the U.S. ended a few days before Halloween. Children’s pedestrian deaths are four times higher on Halloween than on any other night of the year. A new law to extend DST to the first Sunday in November took effect in 2007, with the purpose of providing trick-or-treaters more light and therefore more safety from traffic accidents. For decades, candy manufacturers lobbied for a Daylight Saving Time extension to Halloween, as many of the young trick-or-treaters gathering candy are not allowed out after dark, and thus an added hour of light means a big holiday treat for the candy industry. Anecdotally, the 2007 switch may not have had much effect, as it appeared that children simply waited until dark to go trick-or-treating."
