College Ministries 'Year of Listening'
Thank you to everyone who participated in the College Ministries Year of Listening sessions Oct. 23-24. Comments will be reported in the aggregate only, without any individual identifying features, and shared with President Carlson, the pastors, our external consultant and the Listening and Visioning Group.

Have you seen me?
The Luther College Fine Arts Collection has completed our full-campus Art Inventory. Each week we'll feature one work of art that isn't where we thought it would be in hopes that the larger Luther community can assist in locating the work.
This week's "Have you seen me?" is a really interesting print, last seen in Brandt in the mid-1990s. It depicts a little monkey riding a bear and is titled, "O You Easy Rider." New archive hours for walk-ins
Archives will be open to walk-in patrons from 1-4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday. During this time, Dalton Little, acting as the Archives Public Services Assistant, will be available to assist patrons during the open research hours. Research inquiries, appointment requests and related questions can be directed to <archives> or 387-1805.
November is National Diabetes Awareness Month
Worried that you might develop diabetes? One in 12 Americans, more than 25 million people, have diabetes. Reminder from facilities
If taking a college fleet vehicle and leaving a personal vehicle in the parking lot, please ask for a parking permit in the Facilities Services office. Park personal vehicles in the fleet line and then hang the parking permit from the rear-view mirror of the personal vehicle.
November staff meetings
The November staff meeting will include a presentation on campus communication and a presentation on logo usage and licensing. The meeting will be offered twice in Peace Dining Room at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12, and 9 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 13.

Biweekly payroll Dec. 3
Cabinet has approved Nov. 27-28 as holidays. This holiday schedule limits time for processing bi-weekly payroll for the pay period ending Nov. 21 with a pay date of Dec. 3. Therefore, timecards for the pay period ending Nov. 21 will be due in the Payroll Office by noon on Monday, Nov. 24.

W4 Reminder

LFA funds pooled
The Lecture and Fine Arts Committee has pooled the remaining funds in each of the funding categories into one general LFA fund and is accepting applications through Dec. 1 for event funding. Applicants whose applications were previously declined can revise and resubmit their events and applications. Applications are to be completed online.
LASO sponsors Thanksgivi
Luther Athletes Serving Others is sponsoring a Thanksgiving food drive through Saturday, Nov. 15. The drive is designed to help those in the Decorah community who might not otherwise have the opportunity to enjoy Thanksgiving dinner. All donations received will go to the food pantry at First Lutheran Church in Decorah. All food donations can be dropped off at the box labeled, "LASO Food Drive" near the Circle Drive entrance of the Regents Center on the Luther College campus beginning Friday, Nov. 7.
New portrait studio hours
The visual media office now provides open portrait studio hours once a month for faculty, staff and students. Come to suite 213 in the Union from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on the second Thursday of each month for any portrait needs. The new studio hours begin Dec. 11 and continue once a month for the rest of the academic year. With the new hours being offered, walk-ins will no longer be accepted.

The Luther College Christmas party will be held from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 17. Luncheon fare will be served at stations throughout the upper level of the Union. An e-invitation will be distributed in early December.

'Adam Smith and the Wizard of Oz, or: The Invisible Hand Behind the Curtain'
Luther College aims to prepare students to "serve with distinction for the common good." What, though, if people have different ideas about how the common good is to be achieved? Do we need central planning to coordinate everyone's efforts? Nick Gomersall, associate professor of economics at Luther College, will discuss this influential idea at at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11, in the Recital Hall of the CFL.
Varsity Band and Wind and Percussion Ensemble Concert Nov. 12
The Varsity Band and Wind and Percussion Ensemble will present a fall concert at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12, in the Main Hall of the CFL. Varsity Band and the Wind and Percussion Ensemble are directed by Joan deAlbuquerque, Luther associate professor of music and director of bands. Varsity Band will perform "Suite on Celtic Folk Songs" by Tomohiro Tatebe, "Appalachian Overture" by James Barnes, "Prelude and Celebration" by James Curnow and "Beguine for Band" by Glenn Osser.
SAC Fall Fest Nov. 13
As the weather gets colder, the Luther community is invited to warm up indoors at SAC's Fall Fest at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13, at Marty's. The night will feature the many talents of Luther's student performers, with groups such as Orchesis, Beautiful Mess, and Vera Bang and the Bad Pornstars performing. Hot cider and cookies will be available to all who attend.
Collegium to present Candlelight Compline Service Nov. 13
Collegium, the Luther College Renaissance and Baroque ensemble, will collaborate with James Griesheimer and Marjorie Wharton in offering a Candlelight Compline Service at 9 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13 at Grace Episcopal Church, 506 West Broadway. The 45 minute service will include readings, hymns, prayers, chant and Renaissance polyphony to prepare for the night time, and the busy days to come. All are welcome.
Creative Arts Preview Day Nov. 14
Luther College will host a Creative Arts Preview Day Friday, Nov. 14, giving students the unique opportunity to explore the creative arts at Luther. This day gives students the chance to experience the quality of life on campus, discover the academic excellence of Luther students, and explore what life at Luther is really like. CSS: Sybarite5 at Luther College Nov. 14
String quintet Sybarite5 will take the stage as part of the Center Stage Series of live performances at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14, in the CFL Main Hall. Tickets, on sale in Luther's Ticket Office, are $24 for adults, $22 for seniors age 65 and over and $15 for youth ages 4-18. Sybarite5 has risen to prominence in the music world by virtue of their eclectic repertoire and dynamic performance style. The quintet was heavily inspired by Radiohead and prominently featured the band's works on their debut EP, which reached the top 10 on the Billboard charts.
SAC Spotlight presents Jeremy Messersmith Nov. 15
Mixing buoyant and effortlessly catchy upbeat melodies, with much darker lyrical themes, Jeremy Messersmith will perform his original melancholy indie pop at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, in Marty's. Messersmith explained, "I generally like to balance out the bitter and the sweet in my songs. The happier something is musically, the darker it can be lyrically, you can kind of sneak it in there and that's a little more appealing to me." Symphony Orchestra concert Nov. 16
The Luther College Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Daniel Baldwin, will present their fall concert at 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 16, in the CFL Main Hall. The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission. In the first part of the concert, Symphony Orchestra will perform "Three Dance Episodes" from the Leonard Bernstein musical "On the Town," and "Appalachian Spring" by Aaron Copland. The orchestra will also present the world premiere of "O Nobilissima Viriditas" by Brooke Joyce, the college's composer-in-residence.
Last cooking class of the semester 'Fall Comfort Food' Nov. 17
With the holidays fast approaching, come learn some new adaptations of classic dishes and comfort food. The class will discuss how to streamline the approach to making a multi-course meal, without the stress of a mountain of prep. Class will be held from 12-1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 17, in Valders 379. Second event in the Religion Forum Series Nov. 18
The second religion department forum for the 2014-15 series "Teaching Religion at a College of the Church" will take place at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18, in Valders 206. This forum titled "Religion among the Liberal Arts," consists of faculty members Derek Sweet, Gereon Kopf, Todd Green, Lori Stanley and Jodi Enos-Berlage discussing what constitutes "evidence" and/or acceptable scholarship of how the academic study of religion fits within the liberal arts and specifically their respective disciplines in communication studies, religion, anthropology and biology. Brass Ensembles to perform concert Nov. 19

Retirement
Gary Brickman, who has worked for Luther for more than 19 years, has announced his retirement effective Dec. 31. In the weeks ahead, we look forward to thanking Gary for his dedicated service to the college.
Richard Cole presented a program for the Adult Forum on Nov. 2 at Decorah Lutheran Church. The title of the lecture was "Martin Luther, Anti-Semites and the 1994 ELCA Declaration of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America to the Jewish Community." This document is now part of the Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C. Cole also attended the autumn meeting of the Seven Rivers Fulbright Chapter in La Crosse.
Loren Toussaint, and Jessie Dezutter and Mia Leigssen of the University of Leuven, recently published a study on forgiveness, ego-integrity and depression in older adults ages 75 years or more who live in elderly care homes and in the community. The study was published in the Journal of Gerontology: Psychological Sciences, a peer-reviewed, scientific journal. A summary of the study can be found on the Oxford University Publishers' blog site.
Steve Smith attended HighEdWeb Oct. 19-22 in Portland, Oregon, and presented a session on his work using Anisible for Reason application deployment and configuration management.
Anna Peterson presented her paper "'Getting the Most Money Possible Out of [Pregnant] Wretches:' Midwives and the Development of the Norwegian Welfare State, 1910-1940" on Nov. 6 at the Social Science History Association's annual conference in Toronto.
Andy Hageman published the an essay-chapter "Dale Cooper and the Mouth-Feel of Twin Peaks" in the collected volume "Food on Film: Bringing Something New to the Table."
Anna Murray was named the Outstanding New Professional of the Iowa Student Personnel Association at the organization's annual conference in Ames on Oct. 28.
Kelsey Boyce, Jordan Burkhart, Anna Murray and Kevin Wenger presented "Leading with your Strengths: How a small school is using StrengthsQuest in a big way," at the annual conference of the Iowa Student Personnel Association in Ames on Oct. 28.
Kelsey Boyce and Nick Lauer presented "Student Affairs: A Hidden Career for Today’s Undergraduate Students" at the annual conference of the Upper Midwest Region of the Association of College and University Housing Officers in Coralville on Nov. 5.
