Message from the President: seeking nominations for study group

Our community exercise to establish priorities for 2016-18 identified several important areas for study and action. In category two, "Develop a comprehensive plan for achieving and maintaining maximum fiscal strength," the first priority is to "Establish workforce and program ratios and implement a plan to meet them."

To achieve this priority, we are forming a study group to be led by the Vice President for Academic Affairs with the help of the Vice President for Finance and Administration. Their task will be to review the workforce and program ratio goals identified by Task Group 150 and to make recommendations to the President for achieving fiscally sustainable levels of staffing across the College. The study group's work is to be completed by the end of the 2016 spring semester. 

This group will coordinate with both the College Resource Council and the Academic Planning Committee during the process. Their work will also be discussed by the academic department heads and the Cabinet.

We are asking for nominations of faculty and exempt and non-exempt staff to serve on this study group. Please send nominations to Janine Brandt in the Dean's Office by Jan. 12. The committee will begin their work in early February. It is anticipated that meetings will occur every two weeks during the spring semester.

January staff meeting

At this month's staff meeting, Brenda Ranum will present "Helping Students Reflect on their Work-study Experiences." Luther is unusual in the large number of students we employ, and whether you directly supervise students or not, all staff can contribute to this unique aspect of a Luther education. The meeting will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 13, and at 9 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 14, in Peace Dining Room.

Vote for Luther in the NCAA's Special Olympics Spotlight Poll

Vote every day for Luther, recently nominated for the NCAA's Special Olympics Spotlight Poll. Vote now through Jan. 25 for our athletes' partnership with the Special Olympics. The event with the highest number of votes on Jan. 25 will be given $500 to use for its next Special Olympics event.

J-term hours for Dahl Centennial Union

The Dahl Centennial Union will be open daily from 7 a.m.-10 p.m. through Wednesday, Jan. 27. Building hours will change for J-term break and spring semester.

Residence Life seeks nominations for resident assistants

Do you know a student with leadership qualities who stands out among their peers? Residence Life is beginning the resident assistant selection process for 2016-17 and would appreciate names of caring and responsible students who are engaged in the Luther community. 2016 health and prescription coverage

Please remember to show your 2016 UMR health care card to health care providers the first time you have a visit in 2016. The 2016 card should also be presented to pharmacies even though Magellen Rx continues to be the provider for prescriptions.

New 'Luther College Classical Hour' on KWLC

KWLC introduces a new weekly show featuring Luther College recitals and ensemble performances every Sunday from 6-7 p.m. beginning Jan. 17. Hosted by Jason Leuthold '16 and Nathan Fippinger '17, the "Luther College Classical Hour" will showcase different Luther performers and ensembles each week.

Sustainability news: Staying warm in winter

In addition to being a fire hazard, space heaters also consume large amounts of electricity. A single space heater uses 10 times more electricity than a desktop computer. Avoid opening windows to cool a room if the heat is too high. Place a work order and Facilities Management will address temperature concerns.

The latest addition to the Faculty Stories page is an interview with Amy Weldon, associate professor of English. Topics range from her Alabama childhood to her concerns about the impoverishing effects of our electronic devices to her study abroad course, "In Frankenstein's Footsteps."

On the Alumni Profiles page, Erin Spanczak '12 talks about her first three years as an accountant with Rockwell Collins, including working in England for six months.

Reading group Jan. 15 

The Dean's Office is pleased to sponsor a reading group for the book "Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking" by Susan Cain. Professors Joe Breitenstein and Paul Gardner will help lead a discussion of the book from 3-5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 15, in Mott Room in Dahl Centennial Union. The author explores introversion through personal experiences, psychological research and brain chemistry. In her enjoyable and highly readable narrative, Cain seeks to find ways for introverts and extroverts to better understand one another – and for introverts to understand their own contradictions (like the ability to act like extroverts in certain situations).
