Luther policy on hover boards
We have been closely following the developments regarding safety concerns associated with hover boards. Recent information from the National Fire Protection Association has revealed that the batteries in these devices are dangerous and prone to exploding and combusting, creating a personal safety and fire risk. These devices are especially dangerous when they are recharging. The NFPA issued fire warnings and stated some hover board fires involved a lithium-ion battery or charger that leaked fluids, was prone to excessive heat and produced odors, sparks and smoke.
In response to these safety concerns, effective immediately, the use, possession or storage of hover boards and similar devices, including Swagways, IO Hawks and Skywalkers, is prohibited on campus.

Nominations for the position of Director of the Center for Ethics and Public Life are due Feb. 1. IRS Form 1095-C: Proof of health insurance coverage
Full-time employees who worked any time during 2015 may receive a new tax form, Form 1095-C, in early 2016. In some cases, part-time employees (those working less than 30 hours per week) may also receive this form. Form 1095-C provides proof of the health insurance coverage offered to employees during 2015. See the HR website for more information.
Delta Dental Enhanced Benefits Program
Delta Dental participants may be eligible for the Delta Dental Enhanced Benefits Program. This benefit offers additional oral health services to subscribers with the following conditions: cancer, chemotherapy and/or radiation; diabetes; high-risk cardiac conditions; kidney failure or dialysis; periodontal (gum) disease; pregnancy or suppressed immune systems. To receive the additional dental benefits you must enroll in the enhanced benefits program. See the HR website for more information and directions.

KATIE upgrade Feb. 2

Please remember to show your 2016 UMR health care card to health care providers for first time visits in 2016. The 2016 card should also be presented to pharmacies even though Magellen Rx continues to be the provider for prescriptions.

New 'Luther College Classical Hour' on KWLC
KWLC introduces a new weekly show featuring Luther College recitals and ensemble performances every Sunday from 6-7 p.m. beginning Jan. 17. Hosted by Jason Leuthold '16, and Nathan Fippinger '17, the "Luther College Classical Hour" will showcase different Luther performers and ensembles each week.

SoDa winter session starts Jan. 25
SoDa (Song and Dance) Club will meet during second semester on Mondays from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Jan. 25-March 14. SoDa is for students in grades K-8; new members are always welcome. The SoDa Club offers experiences in healthy vocal production, movement, music literacy and artistic music-making, while giving Luther education students hands-on experience. Due to technical problems on the NCAA website, polling has been extended through Saturday, Jan. 30, and the final tally will be based on votes received between Jan. 20-30. You can vote every day for our student-athletes' partnership with the Special Olympics. The event with the highest number of votes on Jan. 30 will be given $500 to use for its next Special Olympics event.

'Impermanence: The Time of Man' on display through Jan. 22
"Impermanence: The Time of Man," a video installation by filmmakers and visual artists David Hodge and Hi-Jin Kang Hodge, is on display through Jan. 22 in the Kristin Wigley-Fleming Fine Arts Gallery in the CFA. The exhibit is open for viewing from 11:15 a.m.-12:15 p.m., Monday-Friday. Since different segments of the video piece are likely to be showing on different days, people are encouraged to visit the installation multiple times. The husband-wife duo was on campus in October to deliver the Oen Fellows lecture.
Not Quite Free Lunch for employees
Tuesday, Jan. 19, will be the first of a new monthly lunch for all Luther employees sponsored by Wellness. Boost your social and emotional wellness at work by getting away from your typical work space and mingling with folks from across campus. Come enjoy a meal anytime between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. in the Nobel Dining Room for less than the employee rate in the cafeteria. The charge is just $5 (cash or check only). Luther College Woman's Club meeting Jan. 19
The Luther College Woman's Club will learn about walking for health at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 19, in Peace Dining Room. Ann Mansfield, project director for the Northeast Iowa Food and Fitness Initiative, will present "Driftless Hiking: Walking Purposefully." Special music is planned, as well as refreshments and social time. Visions of a Wandering Naturalist' art exhibit opens Jan. 20
A reflection of Ladislav Hanka's intense interest in the natural world, especially that of birds and bees, will be on display in a print and mixed-media exhibit titled, "Visions of a Wandering Naturalist" in Preus Library Jan. 20-March 15. Hanka's work has been featured in various collections in the United States and overseas, including the Fogg Museum of Art at Harvard University, the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, the National Museum of Prague, the British Library in London, and the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C.
Todd Boss poetry reading Jan. 21
Todd Boss, co-founder and executive and artistic director of Motionpoems, will read from his poetry at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 21, in the CRH. A reception will follow the reading. Boss is the author of "Yellowrocket" and "Pitch," both published by W. W. Norton Press. The Star Tribune claims "Boss' poems generate their own rambunctious music and remind us that 'yes, miracles happen.'"
Ambassador Aas on campus Jan. 22
Norwegian Ambassador Kåre Aas will be in Decorah Thursday-Friday, Jan. 21-22, and on campus Friday morning. The campus community is invited to hear Ambassador Aas speak at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 22, in Olin 102. The event is open to the public with no charge for admission. Bernie Sanders campaign event Jan. 24
Democratic presidential candidate Senator Bernie Sanders will hold a campaign event at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 24, in the Regents Center Main Gym. Doors open at 11:30 a.m. The event is open to the public with no charge for admission. 'The Man Who' theatre performance Jan. 26
The Visual and Performing Arts department presents stories of tragedy and triumph in the play "The Man Who" at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 26, in CFA Studio II. The show is directed, performed, designed and managed by Luther students in Jeff Dintaman's January Term seminar. Inspired by Oliver Sacks' best-seller "The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat," the performance of "The Man Who" is open to the public with no charge for admission.
'A Splinter of Light on All' dance performance Jan. 26
An original dance piece conceived and choreographed by Andrea Vazquez-Aguirre, "A Splinter of Light on All" will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 26, in Storre Theatre. The performance is open to the public with no charge for admission. The piece is inspired by the work of Chinese poet Wang Wei and Di Shu, a contemporary Chinese calligraphy art, with music by Hungarian composer Bela Bartok.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS, ETC.
Justin Sprung, along with coauthor Ashlie Britton, have published the peer-reviewed article, "The dyadic context of safety: An examination of safety motivation, behavior, and life satisfaction among farm couples" in the journal Safety Science. The article is available online.
We hear great things about students who have wonderful, sometimes life-changing, J-term experiences abroad, but what about the students who stay on campus? In the most recent Ideas and Creations Blog post, Emily Holm '16 writes that J-term on campus is exactly where she wants to be.
"Memories of Emotional Speed," an exhibit by photographer Tyler Rinken '14, is on display until the first week of February at the Decorah Visitor Center, 507 W. Water St. The exhibit features Rinken's photographs from the 2015 dirt track racing season, during which Rinken traveled to nearly 20 tracks in eight states.
During J-term 2016, 294 Luther students and 25 faculty/staff program leaders are participating in one of 18 courses in locations around the world.
