ANNOUNCEMENTS
Mid-year update and community gathering
President Carlson is starting a new tradition of providing a mid-year update before the start of second semester. Faculty and staff are invited to attend the first such update at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 3, in Valders 206. Following the president's remarks, there will be a reception in the Valders Concourse. This is a time to gather as a community and reconnect with one another before the start of second semester. Offices should close, if possible, so that all can attend.
Faculty and staff encouraged to attend convocation
Convocations are an important way the Luther community gathers to affirm its mission. All faculty and staff are encouraged to attend spring semester opening convocation at 9:40 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, in the CFL. If possible, offices should close so all can attend. The University of Iowa's David Gould will speak on "Play, Passion and Purpose: A New Arc for Education." Please urge students to participate as well. Convocation is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Luther policy on hover boards
We have been closely following the developments regarding safety concerns associated with hover boards. Recent information from the National Fire Protection Association has revealed that the batteries in these devices are dangerous and prone to exploding and combusting, creating a personal safety and fire risk. These devices are especially dangerous when they are recharging. The NFPA issued fire warnings and stated some hover board fires involved a lithium-ion battery or charger that leaked fluids, was prone to excessive heat and produced odors, sparks and smoke.
In response to these safety concerns, effective immediately, the use, possession or storage of hover boards and similar devices, including Swagways, IO Hawks and Skywalkers, is prohibited on campus.

Center for Ethics and Public Life
Nominations for the position of Director of the Center for Ethics and Public Life are due Feb. 1. The Call for Nominations and a summary of the recommendations from the planning group appointed to re-envision the Center can be found on KATIE under the President's Office "Planning Documents" site. IRS Form 1095-C: Proof of health insurance coverage
Full-time employees who worked any time during 2015 may receive a new tax form, Form 1095-C, in early 2016. In some cases, part-time employees (those working less than 30 hours per week) may also receive this form. Form 1095-C provides proof of the health insurance coverage offered to employees during 2015. See the HR website for more information.
Delta Dental Enhanced Benefits Program
Delta Dental participants may be eligible for the Delta Dental Enhanced Benefits Program. This benefit offers additional oral health services to subscribers with the following conditions: cancer, chemotherapy and/or radiation; diabetes; high-risk cardiac conditions; kidney failure or dialysis; periodontal (gum) disease; pregnancy or suppressed immune systems. To receive the additional dental benefits you must enroll in the enhanced benefits program. See the HR website for more information and directions.

KATIE upgrade Feb. 2

Lunch hour yoga starts Feb. 10
Join Molly Lesmeister for a six-week yoga session Feb. 10-March 16. The class meets at 12:15 p.m. Wednesdays in Studio II in the CFA. Classes are 50 minutes in length. SoDa winter session starts Jan. 25
SoDa (Song and Dance) Club will meet during second semester on Mondays from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Jan. 25-March 14. SoDa is for students in grades K-8; new members are always welcome. The SoDa Club offers experiences in healthy vocal production, movement, music literacy and artistic music-making, while giving Luther education students hands-on experience. 'Visions of a Wandering Naturalist' art exhibit on display in Preus Library
A reflection of Ladislav Hanka's intense interest in the natural world, especially that of birds and bees, is on display in a print and mixed-media exhibit titled, "Visions of a Wandering Naturalist" in Preus Library through March 15.
Democratic mock caucus rescheduled
Students, faculty, staff and community members are invited to participate in a mock Democratic caucus at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 26, in Valders 206. The mock caucus has been moved to 11 a.m. due to Hillary Clinton's recently announced campaign event in Decorah, scheduled for the afternoon of Jan. 26.
The mock caucus is organized by Carly Hayden Foster's "Gender, Politics, and Iowa Caucuses" J-term class. Come see what a precinct-level Iowa Democratic Caucus is all about! Participants will have the opportunity to make short speeches in favor of and cast a ballot for their favorite Democratic candidate. No experience or pre-registration required. 'The Man Who' theatre performance Jan. 26
The Visual and Performing Arts department presents stories of tragedy and triumph in the play "The Man Who" at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 26, in CFA Studio II. The show is directed, performed, designed and managed by Luther students in Jeff Dintaman's January Term seminar. Inspired by Oliver Sacks' best-seller "The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat," the performance of "The Man Who" is open to the public with no charge for admission.
'A Splinter of Light on All' dance performance Jan. 26
An original dance piece conceived and choreographed by Andrea Vazquez-Aguirre, "A Splinter of Light on All" will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 26, in Storre Theatre. The performance is open to the public with no charge for admission. The piece is inspired by the work of Chinese poet Wang Wei and Di Shu, a contemporary Chinese calligraphy art, with music by Hungarian composer Bela Bartok.
J-term science poster session
Students from the biology, chemistry, math, and physics departments will present a poster session from 10:30 a.m.-noon Wednesday, Jan. 27, in the Sampson Hoffland atrium. Come see what students have been working on this J-term. Treats will be served.
Nordic Choir homecoming concert Feb. 4
Nordic Choir, under the direction of Allen Hightower, will perform at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, in the CFL Main Hall. The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission. The 2016 Nordic Choir tour program includes selections from the following: "Serenity" by Ola Gjeilo, "Wake, Awake" by F. Melius Christiansen and "Only in Sleep" by Ēriks Ešenvalds, as well as hymn arrangements, spirituals and the traditional Nordic Choir closing piece, "O Lord God" by Pavel Chesnokov.
Iowa Watercolor Society exhibit on display starting Feb. 5
The Iowa Watercolor Society Annual Traveling Show will be on display Feb. 5-March 31 in the CFL. Internationally known artist and architectural illustrator Iain Steward judged the 2015 Iowa Watercolor Society competition. Chosen from over 140 entries, the traveling show is a representation of 25 Iowa artists who were finalists in the competition.
Center Stage Series: Imani Winds to perform Feb. 6
Performing music inspired by the works of Langston Hughes, Grammy-nominated wind quintet Imani Winds will appear as part of Luther's Center Stage Series at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, in the CFL Main Hall. Tickets, on sale in Luther's Ticket Office, are $24 for adults, $22 for seniors age 65 and over and $15 for youth ages 4-18.
Symphony Orchestra homecoming concert Feb. 7
Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Daniel Baldwin, will perform at 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 7, in the CFL Main Hall. The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission. The orchestra will perform "Petite Suite" by Claude Debussy, "Polovtsian Dances" from the opera "Prince Igor" by Alexander Borodin and "Symphony No. 8 in G major, Op. 88" by Antonín Dvořák. Three students from Decorah are members of the orchestra: Emily Alcock '17 (daughter of Sherry Alcock) on the violin and first-years Gabrielle Bruns, viola, and Madison Ihde, trumpet.
Baseball banquet Feb. 20
Help Luther Baseball kick off its 2016 season! Luther Baseball will host its second annual First Pitch Banquet Saturday, Feb. 20. Social hour begins at 5:30 p.m., with dinner at 6 p.m. This year's guest speaker is Randy Burns '74, a long-time Division I umpire who now serves as the NCAA Baseball Secretary-Rules Editor. Andy Hageman published an essay on William Gibson's science fiction novels in issue 27 of the journal Paradoxa.
Professor Emeritus David Judisch will receive the Royal Norwegian Medal of St. Olav at spring semester opening convocation at 9:40 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, in the CFL. The St. Olav Medal is awarded in recognition of efforts to strengthen the bonds between Norwegian descendants and their home country. Norwegian Honorary Consul Quentin Boyken will present the medal at convocation on behalf of His Majesty King Harald V of Norway. The Luren Singing Society will provide music for the event.
Robert Shedinger will present "The Truth about Jihad" at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 28, at the Decorah Public Library. The program is open to the public with no charge for admission.
During J-term 2016, 294 Luther students and 25 faculty/staff program leaders are participating in one of 18 courses in locations around the world.
