Mid-year update and community gathering
President Carlson is starting a new tradition of providing a mid-year update before the start of second semester. Faculty and staff are invited to attend the first such update at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 3, in Valders 206. Following the president's remarks, there will be a reception in the Valders Concourse. This is a time to gather as a community and reconnect with one another before the start of second semester. Offices should close, if possible, so that all can attend.
Faculty and staff encouraged to attend convocation
Convocations are an important way the Luther community gathers to affirm its mission. All faculty and staff are encouraged to attend spring semester opening convocation at 9:40 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, in the CFL. If possible, offices should close so all can attend. The University of Iowa's David Gould will speak on "Play, Passion and Purpose: A New Arc for Education" and Professor Emeritus David Judisch will be awarded the Royal Norwegian Medal of St. Olav. Convocation is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Seeking faculty and staff who were first-generation college students
Luther College has an exceptional history of serving first-generation college students. Typically, at least 20 percent of the students in an incoming class are first-generation college students. Student Life is building a directory of faculty and staff who were first-generation college students. Those interested in serving as a resource for students would be identified on a first-generation resource web page; an optional 250-word reflection can be included with the listing. If interested, please affirm online by Feb. 19 so the directory can be published by mid-March.

Payment is required the day of the blood draw and will be reimbursed. Cost for an A1C blood draw is $30. For the A1C test, your physician must send the request to the lab before the day of the blood draw. The $30 fee will be applied to the normal deductible and out-of-pocket limits.
Even-year employee wellness benefits and requirements
As part of Luther's wellness initiatives, the 2016 calendar year carries additional health care benefits and requirements for employees and their families enrolled in the Luther College Health Care Plan. During 2016, the Luther College Health Care Plan covers 100 percent of a community wellness blood screening, routine physical exam and health risk assessment. There will be on-campus blood screenings throughout the year, and a detailed memo regarding all of the 2016 benefits and requirements will be provided to employees in the coming weeks. Those who wish to complete these requirements prior to receiving the memo, should contact Human Resources or Wellness for details on coverage and requirements.

Sustainability news: Weigh the waste
From January 12-15, Luther Sustainability conducted a "Weigh the Waste" analysis in the cafeteria. Over four days, 831 plates of food waste were collected, weighed and analyzed to raise awareness about composting and food waste on campus. On average, students left 0.2 pounds of food waste on their plate after a meal, about the weight of a deck of cards. Seventy percent of the waste collected was compostable. Only meat, dairy, fried food and plastic should go into the trash. Everything else served in the cafeteria can be composted, including napkins. Please remember to sort food waste before placing plates onto the dish return tray.
Submit study away photos
The Luther Alumni Magazine seeks student photos from study away experiences in spring 2015 through J-term 2016. All who send photos will be entered in a drawing for a $50 Luther gift card. Please submit up to six photos that illustrate learning and travel experiences. A selection of photos will appear in this spring's magazine. Those who submit should explain why they took each photo, what program they were on and their class year. Email photos to <magazine> by March 1.

And finally...
Feb. 2, 2016, is Punxsutawney Phil's 130th prognostication! According to legend, if Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter weather. If he does not see his shadow, there will be an early spring. Here is Punxsutawney Phil's prediction from this morning:
"The inner circle goes to great ends
To keep me abreast of latest trends
Down in my burrow I never get bored
Riding on my hover board
And I sure have fun flying my drone
But weather forecasting is my comfort zone
Is this current warm weather more than a trend?
Per chance this winter has come to an end?
There is no shadow to be cast,
An early Spring is my forecast!"
