Seeking faculty and staff who were first-generation college students
Luther College has an exceptional history of serving first-generation college students. Typically, at least 20 percent of the students in an incoming class are first-generation college students. Student Life is building a directory of faculty and staff who were first-generation college students. Those interested in serving as a resource for students would be identified on a first-generation resource web page; an optional 250-word reflection can be included with the listing. If interested, please affirm online by Friday, Feb. 19, so the directory can be published by mid-March.
On-campus wellness blood screening Feb. 16
The first on-campus wellness blood screening for 2016 still has a few openings from 6:50-7:05 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 16, in the Mott Room. Fasting is required for 12 hours prior to the blood draw. To sign up for a time, email Vicky, <jaegervi>. Cost for the basic blood draw is $35; a blood draw for a PSA test for men over age 40 is $40. Payment is required the day of the blood draw and will be reimbursed. Cost for an A1C blood draw is $30. For the A1C test, your physician must send the request to the lab before the day of the blood draw. The $30 fee will be applied to the normal deductible and out-of-pocket limits.
Even-year employee wellness benefits and requirements
As part of Luther's wellness initiatives, the 2016 calendar year carries additional health care benefits and requirements for employees and their families enrolled in the Luther College Health Care Plan. During 2016, the Luther College Health Care Plan covers 100 percent of a community wellness blood screening, routine physical exam and health risk assessment. There will be on-campus blood screenings throughout the year, and a detailed memo regarding all of the 2016 benefits and requirements will be provided to employees in the coming weeks. Those who wish to complete these requirements prior to receiving the memo should contact Human Resources or Wellness for details on coverage and requirements.

Delta Rae to perform at Luther April 1
SAC Spotlight is pleased to announce that Delta Rae, "a full-throated alt-pop band with four lead singers," will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 1, in the CFL Main Hall. Delta Rae has performed on "The Tonight Show" and "Conan" and played almost every major music festival, including Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo and Austin City Limits. Their most recent album, released in 2015, quickly climbed the charts, and their 2013 hit single, "If I Loved You," reached #5 on Billboard's Adult Alternative Songs chart. Tickets, on sale in the Ticket Office, are $15; there is no charge for students who have paid the Co-Curricular Activities Fee (CAF).

Submit study away photos
The Luther Alumni Magazine seeks student photos from study away experiences in spring 2015 through J-term 2016. All who send photos will be entered in a drawing for a $50 Luther gift card. Please submit up to six photos that illustrate learning and travel experiences. A selection of photos will appear in this spring's magazine. Those who submit should explain why they took each photo, what program they were on and their class year. Email photos to <magazine> by March 1.
Wilderness first aid training March 5-6

Free morning fitness class starts Feb. 10
Wellness is now offering a morning fitness class for early risers. Join us for Body Blast from 6-7 a.m. every Wednesday morning starting Feb. 10 in the Regents Center Dance Studio. All employees and students are welcome. Body Blast includes an energizing warm-up, a full body cross-training workout that incorporates a mix of cardio and strength training using little to no equipment, and a relaxing cool-down to get you ready for your day. Tai chi for faculty and staff starts Feb. 16
Tai chi is a meditation in motion and helps to release stress through simple breathing movements. A six-week tai chi class for faculty and staff will begin Tuesday, Feb. 16. 'Shape-Shifting Identities' Religion Forum Feb. 9
Who are we? Where do we fit in this world? What is our vocation? Gereon Kopf will discuss how we develop identities and their psychological, political, moral and religious dimensions at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 9, in the CRH. The lecture, titled "Shape-Shifting Identities: Seeking Stability in a Sea of Change," is part of the 2015-16 Religion Forum Series. The event is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Asia panel discussion Feb. 9
The Asian Student Association will host a panel discussion at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 9, in Marty's. A panel of Luther students and faculty who have recently returned from Asian countries will discuss stereotypes of socioeconomic status, religion and politics that are associated with Asia.
Luther College Emeritus Colloquium meets Feb. 11
The Luther College Emeritus Colloquium will meet at 3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 11, in the Mott Room. Jim Rhodes will present "Iowa Political Caucuses as a Political Institution." All members of the the Luther community are welcome to attend.
Hip-hop scholar Tricia Rose to present Black History Month lecture Feb. 11
Luther is celebrating Black History Month with a visit by hip-hop scholar Tricia Rose, professor of Africana Studies and director of the Center for the Study of Race and Ethnicity in America at Brown University. Rose will deliver the lecture, "Making Black Lives Matter," at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 11, in the CFL Main Hall, with a reception to follow. The lecture and the reception are open to the public with no charge for admission.
Rose's lecture explores the contentious issues highlighted by the Black Lives Matter movement and connects them to forms of structural racism within housing, criminal justice, education, wealth and the media. The lecture is co-sponsored by the Africana Studies department, the Diversity Center and the Center for Ethics and Public Life.
Data Culture event Feb. 11
The first installment of Data Culture, an LIS and Career Center collaboration, is at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 11, in the Hovde Room, Preus Library. Thomas Keegan, head of the University of Iowa's Digital Scholarship and Publishing Studio, and U of I Classics Professor Sarah Bond will deliver a workshop-style presentation on digital scholarship. Keegan and Bond collaborate on digital scholarship in the University of Iowa's digital library, DIY History. They will teach attendees how to create and participate in digital scholarship through crowdsourcing. Computers or tablets encouraged but not required.
V-Day benefit performances Feb. 12-14
To raise money and awareness to stop violence against women and girls, 26 Luther students will present three performances of Eve Ensler's "The Vagina Monologues" at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 12, and Saturday, Feb. 13, and 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 14, in the CRH. Tickets are $5 and are available at the Ticket Office and at the door, if still available. Seating is on a first-come first-served basis. Doors open 30 minutes prior to each performance. All proceeds from the performances are donated to local and national organizations to help end violence against women and girls. Proceeds from Luther's 2016 production will be donated locally to Helping Services of Northeast Iowa and nationally to the One Billion Rising: Revolution campaign.
Guest recital: David Shaffer-Gottschalk, piano
The music department presents guest recitalist David Shaffer-Gottschalk in concert at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 13, in the NRH. Shaffer-Gottschalk will perform "Sonatas and Interludes" by John Cage on a prepared piano – a piano that has had its sound altered by placing objects on or between the strings. The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Faculty Artist Series: Rebecca Boehm Shaffer, horn
Featuring the works of German composer Johannes Brahms, Rebecca Boehm Shaffer will perform "An Evening with Brahms" at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 13, in the NRH. Boehm Shaffer will collaborate with fellow Luther music faculty Karen Kanakis, soprano; Beth Ray Westlund, mezzo-soprano; Jill Phillips, mezzo-soprano; Jessica Paul, piano; and Igor Kalnin, violin, as well as Luther students Kaitlyn York, mezzo-soprano, and Sydney Scooler, horn.
Gospel Sunday worship service Feb. 14
College Ministries will host its annual Gospel Sunday worship service at 10 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 14, in the CFL Main Hall. The college invites to the community to attend the service.
Not Quite Free Lunch for employees Feb. 16
Tuesday, Feb. 16, is the second Not Quite Free Lunch for Luther employees sponsored by Wellness. Boost social and emotional wellness at work by getting away from typical work space and mingling with folks from across campus. Come enjoy a meal anytime between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. in the Nobel Dining Room for less than the employee rate in the cafeteria. The charge is just $5 (cash, check or Luther ID). The Luther College Woman's Club will meet at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 16, in Peace Dining Room. Center Stage Series: Wu Man and the Shanghai Quartet Feb. 18
Combining traditional and contemporary Chinese musical styles, Wu Man and the Shanghai Quartet will perform as part of the Center Stage Series at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 18, in the CFL Main Hall. Wu Man and the Shanghai Quartet's performance, "A Night in Ancient and New China," features both traditional works and works by living composers.

The Beta Theta Omega organization invites Luther and the Decorah community to its annual BTQ Talent Show at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, in the CFL Main Hall. To the family of Chris Sowa, who passed away unexpectedly on Jan. 29. Chris was Brandt Hall director from August 2003-April 2005. Prior to his death, he was interim director for residence life at the University of Kansas, where he had worked since 2010.

William Kuhlman performed the dedicatory recital on the newly installed Austrian-built tracker pipe organ at All Saint's Episcopal Church in Russellville, Arkansas, on Jan. 30. He was joined by baritone Jon Clements '93, tenor Tim Smith and Kristin Kuhlman Smith on cello.
Keith Lesmeister's short story, "The Birds Will Tell You What Happens Next," was published in the inaugural issue of the Indianola Review.
Oyvind T. Gulliksen, honorary research scholar in Nordic studies at Luther, has received a grant from the Norwegian Association of Non-Fiction Writers, in support of his work in Preus Library on the "Letters of Elisabeth Koren." He is also completing a new annotated version of the original Norwegian text of O.E. Rølvaag's novel, "Giants in the Earth," for The National Library in Oslo, Norway. He reviews translations of contemporary American literature for Dag og Tid, a weekly newspaper published in Oslo.
