President Carlson's office hours
President Carlson invites Luther faculty and staff to stop by during her new weekly office hours. The hours listed below will be in the President's Office, Dahl Centennial Union 236:

No appointment is necessary. Office hours will be posted in the Tuesday a week or two in advance.
New role for Karen Martin-Schramm
After nearly 20 years, Karen Martin-Schramm will conclude her service as executive assistant to the President on March 3. During her time at Luther, Karen has worked with three presidents and two interim presidents. In her next role, she will serve as co-director of Luther's Nottingham program, along with her husband Professor Jim Martin-Schramm, for the 2016-17 academic year. The President's Office is planning a coffee in Karen's honor; the date and time will be announced in the Tuesday.
COLLEGE OPERATIONS
Board of Regents meets this week
The Regents will meet on campus Friday and Saturday, Feb. 19-20. To view the "Winter 2016 Report to the Board of Regents," search for "Regents" in the 'search courses' box in the upper-right corner of any KATIE page. If prompted to enroll, accede.
February Staff Meeting
The February staff meeting will include a Board of Regents recap and Q&A with President Carlson as well as a presentation by Emily Neal on innovative environmental education at Luther. The meeting will be offered at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 24, and at 9 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 25, in Peace Dining Room. All staff are encouraged to attend one of the two sessions.
Deadline to submit 2015 flex claims
Health and dependent care flex claims for 2015 must be submitted for reimbursement by March 31, 2016. To be eligible for reimbursement from 2015 elections, claims must have been incurred by March 15, 2016.
Facilities Services warns of icy sidewalks and streets
Facilities Services reminds everyone to be cautious and to wear proper winter footwear when walking on campus sidewalks and streets. As snow melts during the day and refreezes overnight, these areas can be slippery. The grounds crew knows where many problem areas are on campus and treats those locations early in the morning. Please be careful on the way to campus as well. To report a slippery area on campus, please call 387-1146.
Verizon Wireless discount available to Luther employees
Luther employees are now eligible for an 18 percent discount on monthly access charges for their personal cellular plan through Verizon. To qualify for a discount, you must begin or already have a two-year contract or participate in the Verizon Edge program. The discount applies to most voice and data plans with a monthly access fee of $34.99 or higher. Luther employees have had access to a similar discount program through U.S. Cellular for several years. Information on how to apply for the discount from Verizon or U.S. Cellular is available on the Financial Services website.
Financial Fitness Challenge
Get a grip on your finances – participate in the Financial Fitness Challenge. Learn ways to make the most of your paycheck, manage debt and plan for the future. Choose from online course topics that cover budgeting, savings, financial planning, basics of investing, retirement planning and more. This program is supported by Human Resources, managed by the Financial Fitness Group, and funded by the State of Iowa Insurance Commission. There is no cost to participate. Staff Excellence Award
Staff and faculty are invited to nominate an administrative or support staff person for the Staff Excellence Awards. Wellness blood panel results coaching and discussion
Wellness will offer walk-in wellness coaching for employees to discuss wellness blood panel results from 11 a.m.-noon on Thursday, Feb. 18, and Monday, Feb. 22, in the Mott Room. Whether you participated in the most recent on-campus screening or have completed the screening off-campus, stop in to discuss blood panel results, ask questions and get health advice. Land stewardship internships for summer 2016
The Center for Sustainable Communities is now accepting applications for Luther's land stewardship internship program for summer 2016. This hands-on internship experience builds students' knowledge of what it takes to maintain biologically diverse native communities and is an excellent resume builder for future work in the fields of restoration and conservation biology. Wilderness first aid training March 5-6
Love adventure? Don't be caught unprepared! Wilderness first aid training, sponsored by the Wilderness Medicine Institute, will be offered at Luther from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, March 5-6. Tai chi for faculty and staff starts Feb. 16
Tai chi is a meditation in motion and helps to release stress through simple breathing movements. A six-week tai chi class for faculty and staff will begin Tuesday, Feb. 16. 'Let Go' installation on display through March 8
Reflecting his experience and relationship to Norway, artist Josh Black's installation titled, "Let Go," will be on display through March 8 in the Kristin Wigley-Fleming Fine Arts Gallery in the CFA. The exhibit is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Not Quite Free Lunch for employees Feb. 16
Tuesday, Feb. 16, is the second Not Quite Free Lunch for Luther employees sponsored by Wellness. Boost social and emotional wellness at work by getting away from typical work spaces and mingling with folks from across campus. Come enjoy a meal anytime between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. in the Nobel Dining Room for less than the employee rate in the cafeteria. The charge is just $5 (cash, check or Luther ID). Luther College Woman's Club meets Feb. 16
The Luther College Woman's Club will meet at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 16, in Peace Dining Room. Larry Reis, naturalist with Winneshiek County Conservation, will present "Conservation Education: What We Can Do for Nature." Special music, a brief business meeting and refreshments complete the afternoon. A shuttle to the Union will leave the swimming pool lot at 1:10 p.m. All are welcome.
Paideia Texts and Issues lecture Feb. 16
Is self-actualization a uniquely human process or do systems, such as academic institutions, follow a similar path? From their respective disciplines of chemistry and social work, Brad Chamberlain and Britt Rhodes will discuss what they see changing and remaining the same in their lives, disciplines and institution. The lecture, titled "Identity and the Academy: Embracing Change," will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 16, in the CRH. A reception will follow in Qualley Lounge. The lecture and the reception are open to the public with no charge for admission.
'Campus Responses to Islamophobia' webinar Feb. 17
Stories of anti-Muslim bigotry seem to be everywhere. The New York Times recently reported that crimes against Muslim Americans have risen sharply since the terrorist attacks in Paris and San Bernardino. Join the Interfaith Youth Core (IFYC) for an online discussion at noon Wednesday, Feb. 17, in the Mott Room. Webinar participants will learn how different campuses have effectively responded to incidents of Islamophobia and religious hate and how to proactively build inclusive environments.
Center Stage Series: Wu Man and the Shanghai Quartet Feb. 18
Combining traditional and contemporary Chinese musical styles, Wu Man and the Shanghai Quartet will perform as part of the Center Stage Series at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 18, in the CFL Main Hall. Wu Man and the Shanghai Quartet's performance, "A Night in Ancient and New China," features both traditional works and works by living composers.
Data Culture event Feb. 19
The second installment of Data Culture, an LIS and Career Center collaboration, is at 9:15 a.m. Friday, Feb. 19, in the Hovde Room, Preus Library. Erika Strandjord '06, assistant professor of English at Concordia College, uses digital humanities as a teaching and research tool in literature and writing courses. She will discuss how digital humanities enhance scholarship and how to get funding for digital humanities work.
SAC Spotlight presents 'The End of Racism Comedy and Lecture Tour' Feb. 19
SAC Spotlight and the Diversity Center are proud to present the "End of Racism Comedy and Lecture Tour," featuring Preacher Moss, at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 19, in Marty's. As an African-American and Muslim comedian, Preacher Moss brings a unique blend of sincerity, intellect, social commentary and humor to the stage. The event is open to the public. Tickets are $8; there is no charge for admission for Luther students with CAF.
Guest violist Justin Knoepfel to perform Feb. 20
Justin Knoepfel '04 will perform a guest viola recital at 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, in the NRH. Following the recital, Knoepfel will give a lecture, "Discerning a Vocation in Music," in the Choir Room of the Jenson-Noble Hall of Music. The recital and lecture are open to the public with no charge for admission. Knoepfel is currently an assistant professor of viola and violin at Gustavus Adolphus College, where he conducts the Gustavus Philharmonic Orchestra.
BTQ Talent Show Feb. 20
The Beta Theta Omega organization invites Luther and the Decorah community to its annual BTQ Talent Show at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, in the CFL Main Hall. Tickets are on sale in the Union through Feb. 19; tickets are $3 at the table and $5 at the door. Proceeds go to the Decorah Community Free Clinic at First Lutheran Church and the refugee community.
Strengths Sunday Workshop Feb. 21
The next Strengths Sunday Workshop will be held from 2-5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 21, in Olin 213. Students begin by taking the StrengthsFinder assessment with the workshop to follow. Please encourage students to attend, as this is an excellent opportunity for seniors, juniors and sophomores to participate in Strengths if they have not already done so through a class, team or other group during their time at Luther. Miko Kominami and Timothy Hankewich, music director of Orchestra Iowa, will perform a piano recital, "Beethoven: The Last Three Sonatas," at 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 21, in the NRH. The program is open to the public with no charge for admission.
'Nursing Professional Identity' lecture Feb. 22
Focusing on the professional identity of nurses and other healthcare workers, cultural and applied anthropologist Heidi Bludau will discuss the global migration of healthcare workers at 4 p.m. Monday, Feb. 22, in Valders 362. The event is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Center Stage Series presents Celtic Nights Feb. 25
Bringing to life the story of the fight for Irish independence, the music and dance ensemble Celtic Nights will perform as part of Luther's Center Stage Series at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 25, in the CFL Main Hall. Tickets, on sale in the Ticket Office, are $25 for adults, $23 for seniors age 65 and over and $15 for youth ages 4-18, and may be purchased online at www.tickets.luther.edu.
SAC Spotlight presents the Upright Citizens Brigade Feb. 26
The Upright Citizens Brigade Touring Company will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 26, in Marty's. This touring formation of UCB features some of the best up-and-coming young comedians for 90 minutes of totally unscripted, improvised fun. The evening will feature an opening performance by Luther improv group Top Banana. Sponsored by SAC Spotlight, Top Banana, Wellness, and the theatre and business departments. 'Being of Service to Others' vocational retreat Feb. 26-27
Students, faculty and staff are invited to an overnight retreat Feb. 26-27 at Good Earth Village in Spring Valley, Minnesota. Hosted by the Career Center and College Ministries, "Being of Service to Others: What's Your Story?" will offer opportunities for vocational reflection and conversation. Hans Peterson '91 will lead music and reflection sessions. Retreat participants will depart from the CFL at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 26, and return by 5 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 27. Delta Rae to perform at Luther April 1
SAC Spotlight is pleased to announce that Delta Rae, "a full-throated alt-pop band with four lead singers," will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 1, in the CFL Main Hall. Delta Rae has performed on "The Tonight Show" and "Conan" and played almost every major music festival, including Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo and Austin City Limits. Their most recent album, released in 2015, quickly climbed the charts, and their 2013 hit single, "If I Loved You," reached #5 on Billboard's Adult Alternative Songs chart. Tickets, on sale in the Ticket Office, are $15; there is no charge for Luther students with CAF.

Custodial staff: The Custodial Department has an immediate opening for a .75 FTE 12-month position. General custodial responsibilities include overall appearance of assigned academic and residence hall building(s) and public areas. Hours will generally be Monday through Friday. Administrative assistant: The Development Office seeks a full-time administrative assistant. The successful candidate will provide administrative assistance to the Vice President, directors, gift planners and programs in the Development Office. Paul Gardner will lead a discussion on Jessica Stern and J.M. Berger's book "ISIS: The State of Terror" at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 18, at the Decorah Public Library. "ISIS: The State of Terror" is a good introduction to ISIS written for a general audience. The program is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Jerry Johnson, retired director of public information at Luther, will be the featured author at a book signing from 7-9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 26, at Dragonfly Books, 112 W. Water St., Decorah. He will read from and sign copies of his latest book, "Coot Stews." Available at Dragonfly and the Luther Book Shop, this is the third book in his "Coot" series, following "Crazy Old Coot" and "Old Coots Never Forget." The books are selected pieces from his blog, "Dispatches from a Northern Town." Johnson is also the author of the novel "Hunting Birds." The author's proceeds from book sales at the event will be donated to Friends of the Decorah Public Library. Johnson's books, in both paperback and e-reader editions, are available online through Indie Bound and Amazon Books.
Amy Weldon and Jon Jensen will read from their essays which appear in the new volume "FRACTURE: Essays, Poems, and Stories on Fracking in America" at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 9, at Dragonfly Books.
