Students staying on campus or going somewhere other than home for the summer should stop by the Mail Center to fill out an address update form. All first-class mail will be forwarded to a student's home address unless the Mail Center is notified otherwise. When sending mail to a student via the SPO, faculty and staff should include a return address in case the student doesn't pick it up before leaving campus.

Be considerate of those with fragrance sensitivities

Please help us to accommodate our co-workers that have sensitivities to various chemical-based or scented products. Human Resources asks for everyones cooperation in our efforts to accommodate their health concerns. Scented products such as hair spray, perfume, cologne, air fresheners and diffused essential oils can trigger reactions such as respiratory distress, nausea, headaches and migraines. Native prairie plant sale

Provide benefits to native pollinators and brighten up your yard with native wildflowers and grasses. Native prairie plants will be for sale at the Winneshiek Farmers Market on Saturdays in May, until plants are sold out. Proceeds benefit Luther's land stewardship program. Alexandra Cousteau to deliver Commencement address May 22

Filmmaker, environmentalist and third-generation explorer Alexandra Cousteau will share insights gained from a lifetime of world travel and water advocacy in her Commencement address on Sunday, May 22. Cousteau is the founder of Blue Legacy International, a non-profit organization with the mission of empowering people to reclaim and restore the world's waters. Cousteau has produced more than 100 award-winning films for Blue Legacy, filming across six continents. Commencement ceremonies begin at 10 a.m. in Carlson Stadium.

Library books due May 13

Books checked out from the main stacks by faculty and staff on or before Sunday, May 8, are due Friday, May 13. Books checked out by faculty and staff may be renewed online or by emailing <library>. The new due date is Dec. 9, the last day of fall semester. Books that have already been renewed three times (for two years) will not be renewed again; instead, physically bring these books to the circulation desk to have them checked in and then out again to "re-start the clock." To view checked-out items and due dates, go to the Library website and click on "Library Account" under Tools. After logging in, click on "My Library Account" in the upper right corner of the page.

Office 2016 implementation

ITS plans to install Office 2016 on all Windows and Mac lab, classroom and podium computers by the start of fall semester 2016. In addition, ITS will begin installing Office 2016 on faculty and staff computers as departments are upgraded, starting with this summer's upgrade for faculty in the Division of Humanities and Fine Arts. Fiscal year end approaching  

Outstanding travel expense reports, original invoices, supporting purchase orders and purchase permits or account adjustments should be sent to the Office for Financial Services by Friday, June 10, to be included in the fiscal year 2015-16 budget. No faxed copies. Items for deposit must be sent to OFS by Friday, June 3. Thanks for helping OFS close out the year in a timely manner.

Book Shop news

Martin Klammer will sign copies of his new book, "Out, Out Brief Candle! Macbeth Comes to Africa's Children of Fire," from 10:30 a.m.-noon Friday, May 13, in the Book Shop. Proceeds from the book will be donated to the non-profit organization Children of Fire.

Sustainability news

Between October 2015 and April 2016, Luther College diverted more than 500 pounds of plastic film from the landfill. In recognition of our achievement, Trex Composite Lumber has donated a LEED-certified composite lumber bench made from recycled plastic film. The bench will be placed outside of Ylvisaker in the edible landscape. Luther will continue collecting plastic film across campus for a chance to earn another bench.

Showcase concerts May 20 and 21

As part of Commencement weekend, the music department presents two showcase concerts featuring four Luther ensembles. Symphony Orchestra and Nordic Choir will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 20, in the CFL Main Hall. Jazz Orchestra and Concert Band will perform at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 21, in the CFL Main Hall. Both concerts are open to the public with no charge for admission and will be streamed live at stream.luther.edu/music. 

Baccalaureate service May 21

Baccalaureate, a celebration and sending for the Class of 2016, will be held at 8 p.m. Saturday, May 21, in the CFL Main Hall. The celebratory worship service includes hymns, choral anthems, prayers and blessings for graduates and their families. Rooted in the college's Lutheran/Christian heritage and confidence in God's care for all people of the earth, this ecumenical service includes prayer petitions that celebrate the diversity of religious traditions represented in the graduating class. Guests are to be seated by 7:45 p.m. The service will be streamed at: stream.luther.edu.

Administrative assistant: Administrative assistant to provide support for the vice president for Finance and Administration. Position requires a professional demeanor and the ability to maintain confidentiality. Qualified candidates must have strong communication skills, a record of providing excellent customer service, high level of computer expertise, the ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks, and the ability to exercise thoughtful and independent judgment. High school diploma is required, degree in business from a community college preferred. Three years' experience or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred. Administrative assistant: The Financial Aid Office seeks a full-time administrative assistant to be the initial office contact for prospective and current students and their families in person, by phone and email. This person will be responsible for processing and tracking of documents and preparing completed files for review, reviewing monthly office budget expenditures, and coordinating the purchasing of supplies, as well as assisting the Human Resources and Payroll departments with clerical duties as needed. Position start date is Aug. 1.

Custodial staff: .75 FTE position. General custodial responsibilities include overall appearance of assigned academic and residence hall building(s). Hours will generally be Monday through Friday with some weekend work required. Must be able to work with little supervision, complete work thoroughly and promptly, and be self-motivated. High school diploma or equivalent required. 

Energy and waste fellow: The Center for Sustainable Communities seeks an energy and waste fellow. This is a 10-month, full-time, 40-hour per week (.83 FTE) non-renewable position starting Aug. 1 and ending May 31, 2017. The energy and waste fellow works with faculty, staff and students to educate the Luther community about the college's energy and waste reduction goals and related initiatives. The position requires a bachelor's degree, excellent oral and written communication skills, the ability to work collaboratively with a broad range of people and a valid driver's license. One to three years of relevant work experience preferred. Experience with marketing, communications and/or web content development is desirable. Experience and/or familiarity with the Luther College campus is desirable, but not required. 

Multimedia strategic fellow: Information Technology Services seeks a multimedia strategic fellow to participate on the User Services and Multimedia teams within ITS. This is a one year, full-time position. The multimedia strategic fellow assists the multimedia lead in promoting and supporting the effective uses of video, audio, textual, graphical and other electronic media in support of teaching, learning, research and administrative purposes. Supervisory responsibilities include daily management of the multimedia ticket queue and multimedia student staff productivity.

Luigi Enriquez '17, was awarded the Krahn Family Student Life Service Award for the 2015-16 academic year. The Krahn Family Student Life Service Award is determined by a nomination process and given to a current sophomore or junior who has demonstrated a strong contribution to campus life in a way that embraces the spirit and mission of Luther College.

Ron Ferguson, Joseph Kremer and Char Kunkel accompanied seven sociology students to the annual Iowa Sociological Association meetings on Friday, April 28, at the University of Iowa. Jorge Loyo '17, presented "Women and Children in the New Jim Crow;" Katie Larson '16, presented her senior project, "Globalization of Beauty: Cosmetic Surgery and Impossible Beauty Standards in Venezuela;" and Jacq Congello '17, presented a poster session entitled, "The Meanings of MakeUp." Michael Bruins '16, Mic Farrin '17, Aracelli Garcia '17, and Carla Ramirez '18, also attended.

Ron Ferguson presented his paper "Mixed Messages: Identity Development of Biracial People" at the Midwest Sociological Society meetings March 23-26 in Chicago. Char Kunkel presented in a panel dialogue, "Trans in the Academy: Where Theory Meets Lived Experience," with JamieAnn Meyers, Winona State University, and responses by Betsy Lucal, Indiana University South Bend, and Kate Jenkins, Winona State University.

Bethany Krepela '95 presented "Turning the Cold Call into a GOLD Call" on April 29 at the Association of Lutheran Development Executives Northstar Chapter spring workshop at Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Jim Martin-Schramm delivered a plenary address, "Christian Faith in the Age of Climate Change," at the Southeastern Minnesota Synod Assembly in Rochester on May 6. He also presented a workshop on "Why Lutherans Care for Creation" at the assembly on May 7.

Kate Narveson published three book reviews: a review of Francis J. Bremer's "Lay Empowerment and the Development of Puritanism" will appear in the June 2015 issue of the American Historical Review; a review of Mark Sweetnam's "John Donne and Religious Authority in the Reformed English Church" in the Journal of Ecclesiastical History, 2015; and a review of Brooke Conti's "Confessions of Faith in Early Modern England" in the forthcoming issue of The John Donne Journal. She is now hiding from journal editors.

Iloria Phoenix '18, was awarded the Kuh Family "Positively Luther" Award for the 2015-16 academic year. The Kuh Family "Positively Luther" Award is determined through an application process and given each year to a student whose character, leadership and participation in co-curricular and other educationally purposeful activities enhance the quality of campus life.

Kristin Swanson and Makayla Marinack '16, presented "Ancient Stories, Our Stories: A Collaborative Reading of Judges" at the Central States Regional Meeting of the Society of Biblical Literature, March 13-14. The paper was a report on their faculty/student collaborative research project funded by the Luther Center for Sustainable Communities through a grant from the Margaret A. Cargill Foundation.
