ANNOUNCEMENTS

Jermier appointed vice president for development

President Carlson announced the appointment of James Jermier as vice president for development at Luther. He will begin his new duties June 6.

"Jim brings years of experience and success in planning and executing strategies to grow donor support for mission-critical initiatives," said President Carlson. "As vice president for development, he will build on the history and strength of Luther's alumni and development teams. I look forward to his strategic leadership as we work to inspire and secure support for Luther's mission and priorities." 

Jermier succeeds Keith Christensen, who served as Luther's vice president for development for 15 years, and interim development advisor Mark Kronholm.

Birkestrand Economics and Management Chair

In recognition of the entrepreneurial spirit that is celebrated at Luther, the college is pleased to announce the establishment of the Birkestrand Economics and Management Chair. Dennis and Suzanne Birkestrand of Las Vegas, Nevada, have gifted $1.5 million to Luther to establish the chair. Dennis graduated with a degree in economics and business administration, and this gift celebrates the 50th reunion of his time at Luther.

Board of Regents meets this week

Spring budget update May 12

Faculty and staff are invited to attend a budget update from 9:40-10:20 a.m. Thursday, May 12, in Valders 206. Eric Runestad will present information about the 2015-16 and 2016-17 budgets followed by a question-and-answer period.

Move-out day parking restrictions

To help facilitate the closing of the residence halls, parking access will be restricted on High Street, from Koren to Center Street, from 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 18, until 9 p.m. Thursday, May 19. Faculty/staff parking along this section will be converted to a loading zone only during this time to allow better access for those moving out of Brandt. In addition, faculty and staff are asked to refrain from parking in the small lot south of Ylvisaker and east of the CFL on Thursday, May 19, so those moving out of Ylvisaker may utilize this space. Your cooperation in this matter is greatly appreciated.

Finals Prep Week

A campus programming reminder to all that Tuesday-Sunday, May 10-15 is considered Finals Prep Week and is intended to provide additional space for students to prepare for tests, papers and finals. These six days are set aside for academic preparation for finals and Luther does not schedule public events during this time, including student-led events. All campus events conclude before May 12. Exceptions include athletic events, social gatherings, Cool Aid, student research symposia and Senior Recognition Day and Research Symposium.

Martin Luther statue restored

The Martin Luther statue and base, located on the east side of Larsen Hall, is being restored by the Midwest Art Conservation Center and Moore Drywall and Plastering LLC. The statue itself received a thorough washing and corrosion removal, followed by two layers of patina, a hot wax and a cold wax. Cracks in the base will be stabilized, re-lathed and repainted.

End of year message from the Mail Center

Students staying on campus or going somewhere other than home for the summer should stop by the Mail Center to fill out an address update form. All first-class mail will be forwarded to a student's home address unless the Mail Center is notified otherwise. When sending mail to a student via the SPO, faculty and staff should include a return address in case the student doesn't pick it up before leaving campus.

Be considerate of those with fragrance sensitivities

Please help us to accommodate our co-workers that have sensitivities to various chemical-based or scented products. Human Resources asks for everyones cooperation in our efforts to accommodate their health concerns. Scented products such as hair spray, perfume, cologne, air fresheners and diffused essential oils can trigger reactions such as respiratory distress, nausea, headaches and migraines. Native prairie plant sale

Provide benefits to native pollinators and brighten up your yard with native wildflowers and grasses. Native prairie plants will be for sale at the Winneshiek Farmers Market on Saturdays in May, until plants are sold out. Proceeds benefit Luther's land stewardship program. Alexandra Cousteau to deliver Commencement address May 22

Filmmaker, environmentalist and third-generation explorer Alexandra Cousteau will share insights gained from a lifetime of world travel and water advocacy in her Commencement address on Sunday, May 22. Cousteau is the founder of Blue Legacy International, a non-profit organization with the mission of empowering people to reclaim and restore the world's waters. Cousteau has produced more than 100 award-winning films for Blue Legacy, filming across six continents. Commencement ceremonies begin at 10 a.m. in Carlson Stadium.

Library books due May 13

Books checked out from the main stacks by faculty and staff on or before Sunday, May 8, are due Friday, May 13. Books checked out by faculty and staff may be renewed online or by emailing <library>. The new due date is Dec. 9, the last day of fall semester. Books that have already been renewed three times (for two years) will not be renewed again; instead, physically bring these books to the circulation desk to have them checked in and then out again to "re-start the clock." To view checked-out items and due dates, go to the Library website and click on "Library Account" under Tools. After logging in, click on "My Library Account" in the upper right corner of the page.

Office 2016 implementation

ITS plans to install Office 2016 on all Windows and Mac lab, classroom and podium computers by the start of fall semester 2016. In addition, ITS will begin installing Office 2016 on faculty and staff computers as departments are upgraded, starting with this summer's upgrade for faculty in the Division of Humanities and Fine Arts. Fiscal year end approaching  

Outstanding travel expense reports, original invoices, supporting purchase orders and purchase permits or account adjustments should be sent to the Office for Financial Services by Friday, June 10, to be included in the fiscal year 2015-16 budget. No faxed copies. Items for deposit must be sent to OFS by Friday, June 3. Thanks for helping OFS close out the year in a timely manner.

Book Shop news

Martin Klammer will sign copies of his new book, "Out, Out Brief Candle! Macbeth Comes to Africa's Children of Fire," from 10:30 a.m.-noon Friday, May 13, in the Book Shop. Proceeds from the book will be donated to the non-profit organization Children of Fire.

Sustainability news

Between October 2015 and April 2016, Luther College diverted more than 500 pounds of plastic film from the landfill. In recognition of our achievement, Trex Composite Lumber has donated a LEED-certified composite lumber bench made from recycled plastic film. The bench will be placed outside of Ylvisaker in the edible landscape. Luther will continue collecting plastic film across campus for a chance to earn another bench.

Luther Pool needs summer lifeguards

LFA funding for 2016-17

The Lectures and Fine Arts committee is now accepting applications for funding for events occurring in the 2016-17 academic year. The committee's first meeting is May 17. Applications received before May 17 will considered at that meeting; applicants will be notified of the status of their application before summer. The LFA Request for Funds application is available online. Please read the opening information, as some important details have changed.

Volunteers needed for Cafeteria to Community program

The Cafeteria to Community program needs volunteers for the summer to pack excess food from the Caf for delivery to the First Lutheran Church food pantry. Shifts will be at 1 p.m. on Mondays and Thursdays throughout the summer. Learn more and sign up on the Cafeteria to Community website.

Summer grilling on the Oneota Patio

Summer is coming, and so are Oneota Market patio grilling specials. Starting June 15, enjoy grilled lunch specials on select Wednesdays throughout the summer. Lunch specials include build-your-own burgers, local bratwursts, pork chops on a stick, marinated steak, BBQ pork ribs and BBQ bone-in chicken.

Home sporting events this week

Luther hosts the 2016 NCAA Division III Softball Tournament Decorah Regional May 13-15. This is a double-elimination tournament with the winner advancing to the Super Regionals Round May 20-21. On Friday, St. Catherine University takes on Simpson College at 1 p.m., followed by Luther versus the University of Wisconsin-Superior at 3:30 p.m. Tickets are $6 for adults and $3 for students, with no charge for children under five. Game times and match-ups for Saturday and Sunday are available on the Athletics website.

Best wishes to Softball, Men's Golf and Freya Ultimate -- all competing in post-season tournament play.

Senior art exhibit May 5-22

Representing the culmination of 17 students' art journeys, Luther College senior art majors present a gallery exhibit of their collective works May 5-22 in the Kristen Wigley-Fleming Fine Arts Gallery and the Gregerson Gallery in the CFA. A reception for the student artists will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, May 21, in the CFA. The exhibits and the reception are open to the public with no charge for admission.

Senior Recognition Convocation May 10

The Luther community will gather for the annual Senior Recognition Convocation at 9:40 a.m. Tuesday, May 10, in the CFL Main Hall. This celebration is a time to honor all members of the Class of 2016, as well as recognize graduating seniors who have earned Latin honors, those who have been elected to Phi Beta Kappa and to honor societies in their major fields, those who have received departmental and post-graduate awards, and academic all-conference athletes. Jessica Paul will share reflections. The printed program will include senior paper/project titles. Following convocation, a group photo of the Class of 2016 will be taken.

Luther Gardens tomato seedling sale

Getting ready to start a summer garden? Luther Gardens will sell tomato seedlings from noon-1 p.m. Tuesday, May 10, and 5-5:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 11, in the Valders greenhouse. Chapel service to honor retiring and departing faculty and staff

Retiring and departing faculty and staff will be honored with prayers of Godspeed and farewell in chapel on Wednesday, May 11. After chapel, there will be a brief reception in the CFL lobby. This will also be a time of appreciation and recognition for the service and ministry of Pastor Judd Larson and Pastor Marion Pruitt-Jefferson during this interim year.

Showcase concerts May 20 and 21

As part of Commencement weekend, the music department presents two showcase concerts featuring four Luther ensembles. Symphony Orchestra and Nordic Choir will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 20, in the CFL Main Hall. Jazz Orchestra and Concert Band will perform at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 21, in the CFL Main Hall. Baccalaureate service May 21

Baccalaureate, a celebration and sending for the Class of 2016, will be held at 8 p.m. Saturday, May 21, in the CFL Main Hall. The celebratory worship service includes hymns, choral anthems, prayers and blessings for graduates and their families. Rooted in the college's Lutheran/Christian heritage and confidence in God's care for all people of the earth, this ecumenical service includes prayer petitions that celebrate the diversity of religious traditions represented in the graduating class. Guests are to be seated by 7:45 p.m. The service will be streamed at: stream.luther.edu.

Job openings

Administrative assistant: Administrative assistant to provide support for the vice president for Finance and Administration. Position requires a professional demeanor and the ability to maintain confidentiality. Qualified candidates must have strong communication skills, a record of providing excellent customer service, high level of computer expertise, the ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks, and the ability to exercise thoughtful and independent judgment. High school diploma is required, degree in business from a community college preferred. Three years' experience or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred. Applications from internal candidates, including trailing spouses, should be submitted by May 17.

Administrative assistant: The Financial Aid Office seeks a full-time administrative assistant to be the initial office contact for prospective and current students and their families in person, by phone and email. This person will be responsible for processing and tracking of documents and preparing completed files for review, reviewing monthly office budget expenditures, and coordinating the purchasing of supplies, as well as assisting the Human Resources and Payroll departments with clerical duties as needed. Position start date is Aug. 1.

Custodial staff: .75 FTE position. General custodial responsibilities include overall appearance of assigned academic and residence hall building(s). Hours will generally be Monday through Friday with some weekend work required. Must be able to work with little supervision, complete work thoroughly and promptly, and be self-motivated. High school diploma or equivalent required. 

Energy and waste fellow: The Center for Sustainable Communities seeks an energy and waste fellow. This is a 10-month, full-time, 40-hour per week (.83 FTE) non-renewable position starting Aug. 1 and ending May 31, 2017. The energy and waste fellow works with faculty, staff and students to educate the Luther community about the college's energy and waste reduction goals and related initiatives. The position requires a bachelor's degree, excellent oral and written communication skills, the ability to work collaboratively with a broad range of people and a valid driver's license. One to three years of relevant work experience preferred. Experience with marketing, communications and/or web content development is desirable. Experience and/or familiarity with the Luther College campus is desirable, but not required. 

Multimedia strategic fellow: Information Technology Services seeks a multimedia strategic fellow to participate on the User Services and Multimedia teams within ITS. This is a one year, full-time position. The multimedia strategic fellow assists the multimedia lead in promoting and supporting the effective uses of video, audio, textual, graphical and other electronic media in support of teaching, learning, research and administrative purposes. Supervisory responsibilities include daily management of the multimedia ticket queue and multimedia student staff productivity.

Luigi Enriquez '17, was awarded the Krahn Family Student Life Service Award for the 2015-16 academic year. The Krahn Family Student Life Service Award is determined by a nomination process and given to a current sophomore or junior who has demonstrated a strong contribution to campus life in a way that embraces the spirit and mission of Luther College.

Ron Ferguson, Joseph Kremer and Char Kunkel accompanied seven sociology students to the annual Iowa Sociological Association meetings on Friday, April 28, at the University of Iowa. Jorge Loyo '17, presented "Women and Children in the New Jim Crow;" Katie Larson '16, presented her senior project, "Globalization of Beauty: Cosmetic Surgery and Impossible Beauty Standards in Venezuela;" and Jacq Congello '17, presented a poster session entitled, "The Meanings of MakeUp." Michael Bruins '16, Mic Farrin '17, Aracelli Garcia '17, and Carla Ramirez '18, also attended.

Ron Ferguson presented his paper "Mixed Messages: Identity Development of Biracial People" at the Midwest Sociological Society meetings March 23-26 in Chicago. Char Kunkel presented in a panel dialogue, "Trans in the Academy: Where Theory Meets Lived Experience," with JamieAnn Meyers, Winona State University, and responses by Betsy Lucal, Indiana University South Bend, and Kate Jenkins, Winona State University.

Bethany Krepela '95 presented "Turning the Cold Call into a GOLD Call" on April 29 at the Association of Lutheran Development Executives Northstar Chapter spring workshop at Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Jim Martin-Schramm delivered a plenary address, "Christian Faith in the Age of Climate Change," at the Southeastern Minnesota Synod Assembly in Rochester on May 6. He also presented a workshop on "Why Lutherans Care for Creation" at the assembly on May 7.

Kate Narveson published three book reviews: a review of Francis J. Bremer's "Lay Empowerment and the Development of Puritanism" will appear in the June 2015 issue of the American Historical Review; a review of Mark Sweetnam's "John Donne and Religious Authority in the Reformed English Church" in the Journal of Ecclesiastical History, 2015; and a review of Brooke Conti's "Confessions of Faith in Early Modern England" in the forthcoming issue of The John Donne Journal. She is now hiding from journal editors.

Iloria Phoenix '18, was awarded the Kuh Family "Positively Luther" Award for the 2015-16 academic year. The Kuh Family "Positively Luther" Award is determined through an application process and given each year to a student whose character, leadership and participation in co-curricular and other educationally purposeful activities enhance the quality of campus life.

Kristin Swanson and Makayla Marinack '16, presented "Ancient Stories, Our Stories: A Collaborative Reading of Judges" at the Central States Regional Meeting of the Society of Biblical Literature, March 13-14. The paper was a report on their faculty/student collaborative research project funded by the Luther Center for Sustainable Communities through a grant from the Margaret A. Cargill Foundation.
