Electrical service issues
On Tuesday, June 14, Alliant Energy experienced an event off campus that is resulting in some limitations to electrical services. Alliant Energy hopes to have everything back up and running this morning. If you have questions or significant issues please contact Media Relations, 387-1865.
Tanya Gertz appointed to College Resource Council
Tanya Gertz has been appointed to serve as a staff representative on the College Resource Council. Tanya will serve a three-year term, succeeding Ann Sponberg Peterson, who just completed her CRC term.
The College Resource Council serves as a forum for the discussion and study of major college-wide issues. It provides an opportunity for representative members of the faculty and staff to serve in an advisory role to the administration and Regents of the College, especially in matters of long-range planning, resource allocation, and in the planning of the budget. Staff representatives are nominated by staff members and appointed by the President.
The 2016-17 College Resource Council includes President Carlson, Scott Carlson, Chris Garcia-Prats, Tanya Gertz, Steve Holland, Kevin Kraus, Jon Lund, Guy Nave, Britt Rhodes and Eric Runestad.
Health care update
The prescription benefit has two dollar thresholds in place to protect participants in the plan from paying more than the defined maximum for their prescriptions in the plan year. Once the defined thresholds are met the benefit coverage changes. For example:
The first threshold is $1,500. Participants will pay the applicable copay for medications (tier 1, tier 2 or tier 3) plus an additional 20 percent coinsurance up to $1,500. After the first threshold of $1,500 is satisfied, the participant will pay a flat copay, not including the additional coinsurance, up to the overall plan year maximum of $2,000, meaning an additional $500. Once the second threshold of the additional $500 is satisfied, participants will have 100 percent coverage until the plan renews. Please note this is specific to in-network services and eligible medications.
It has been brought to HR's attention that prescriptions filled between Jan. 1 and April 13, 2016 may have not included the 20 percent coinsurance charge that is applied prior to reaching the $1,500 threshold. For example, you may have paid $10 for a prescription when you should have paid the $10 copay plus the coinsurance. There is nothing you have to do other than be aware that the next prescription refill may cost more. Questions? Please call Marsha, 387-1415.

2016-17 AmeriCorps positions available
The Center for Sustainable Communities, in partnership with Northeast Iowa Food and Fitness Initiative (FFI), is accepting applications for AmeriCorps positions for 2016-17. AmeriCorps service members will join a team of enthusiastic people working in more than 10 schools throughout northeast Iowa to promote healthier school environments. AmeriCorps service members receive a modest living allowance, travel reimbursement and an education award that can be used for higher education tuition or loan repayment after completing a full term of service (Sept. 1, 2016–Aug. 31, 2017).

Adobe software update
Luther has entered into a campus-wide agreement with Adobe to provide the Adobe Creative Cloud suite on Luther-owned computers in place of Adobe Creative Suite. ITS plans to install the software on the lab/classroom/podium computers this summer and on faculty/staff computers through the standard computer refresh process. Summer food education opportunities
As part of the CSA Rebate Program, the Center for Sustainable Communities is offering a series of noontime cooking classes, farm tours, potlucks and more this summer. CSA program participants are required to participate in two of these events, but all members of the campus community are invited to attend these free opportunities. Wellness summer walking/movement program
Plan to walk or do something else of equal or greater exertion this summer? Sign up, record your movement and earn coupons for food items in Oneota Market for every 150 minutes you move between June 8-Aug. 24. The CDC's "2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans" recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity activity each week to improve your health. Peter Swanson '16 talks about how and why he composed a piece of music for his capstone project that combines the worlds of classical music and modern metalcore music by using an extended vocal technique of metal, screaming vocals.
Read about students in Rachel Brummel's Environment and Community seminar who collaborated to produce podcasts about environmental issues ranging from sustainable transportation in the suburbs to the tiny house movement to frac sand mining. The students conducted research, interviewed people, wrote scripts, and learned to record and edit audio.

'DEEP NOTICING' exhibit on display
Returning after a 40-year hiatus from art, Winneshiek County artist John K. Hall has a new exhibit, "DEEP NOTICING: Four Poems, Four Poets, Four Prints," on display on the third floor of Preus Library. The exhibit's title refers to a concept described by writer and scholar Dana Levin as the rare power of poets to see the genuine face of the world and describe it in a way that can transcend mere language. In creating prints that respond to poems, Hall hopes to imbue his works with the same sense of honesty and interconnectivity.

Job openings
Case manager: The Student Life office seeks a regular, 30 hours per week, 10-month (.63 FTE) case manager to provide support toward student success. Duties include serving as a case manager for first-year students and responding to and intervening with students about personal concern reports, academic alerts and other notifications related to student well-being. Master's degree preferred, bachelor's degree and history of working with and advising college students is required. Ability to speak and write in Spanish is preferred.
Custodial staff: Full-time, 12-month position. General custodial responsibilities include overall appearance of assigned academic and resident hall building(s) and public areas. Hours will generally be Monday through Friday.High school diploma or equivalent required.
Admissions counselor: The Admissions Office seeks a full-time admissions counselor. Primary responsibilities of the position include coordinating the recruitment of students from a specific geographic region, visiting targeted high schools and attending select college fair programs. Duties also include interviewing prospective students on campus and assisting with other admissions-related activities and events as assigned. Extensive travel is required and candidates must be able to work evenings and weekends when appropriate. A bachelor's degree is required and applicants must have a valid driver's license.

Todd Green served on a panel at the Vocation of a Lutheran College Conference at Augsburg College June 9. The topic of the panel was "Interfaith Engagement and Complex Moral Issues." Mark Hanson, the former presiding bishop of the ELCA, moderated the panel. The panel included Jaylani Hussein, executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations in Minnesota, and Lynn Liberman, a rabbi and health care chaplain in the Twin Cities.
Jim Martin-Schramm's essay, "What Powers Us? A Comparative Religious Ethics of Energy Sources, Power, and Privilege," coauthored with Christiana Z. Peppard, Julia Watts Belser and Erin Lothes Biviano, has been published in the Journal of the Society of Christian Ethics, Vol. 36, No. 1, Spring/Summer 2016, 3-25.

EDITORIAL COMMENT
And finally...
June 14 is National Flag Day, which commemorates the adoption of the Stars and Stripes as the official flag of the United States. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a presidential proclamation establishing a national Flag Day on June 14.
According to the Library of Congress website:
"On June 14, 1777, John Adams spoke about the flag at a meeting of the Continental Congress in Philadelphia. He said, 'Resolved, that the flag of the thirteen United States shall be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the Union be thirteen stars, white on a blue field, representing a new constellation.' There have been 27 official versions of the flag so far; stars have been added to it as states have entered the Union. The current version dates to July 4, 1960, when Hawaii became the 50th state."
On Sunday, June 12, President Obama ordered that the U.S. flag be flown at half-staff at the White House and all public buildings and grounds until sunset on June 16 as a "mark of respect for the victims of the act of hatred and terror perpetrated on Sunday, June 12, 2016, in Orlando, Florida."
