Decorah is one of four communities in northeast Iowa highlighted in "America's Walking Renaissance," published by America Walks and the Every Body Walk! Collaborative. The book examines how nine locations across the U.S. are getting back on their feet to embrace walking and become more walkable. Decorah is part of the northeast Iowa location, which also includes Postville, West Union and Clermont/Elgin. "To have northeast Iowa featured in the 'America's Walking Renaissance' case book is amazing. Kudos to all of the champions working for healthy changes in their communities," said Ann Mansfield, Luther's project coordinator for NE Iowa Food and Fitness Initiative. This new book serves as an important look back at the progress made to encourage walking across the U.S. and a guide and inspiration for communities just getting started on the path to walkability. "To find the universal elements enough; to find the air and the water exhilarating; to be refreshed by a morning walk or an evening saunter... to be thrilled by the stars at night; to be elated over a bird's nest or a wildflower in spring — these are some of the rewards of the simple life."
-John Burroughs
"The consumption society has made us feel that happiness lies in having things, and has failed to teach us the happiness of not having things."
