ANNOUNCEMENTS

Sparkes appointed dean for institutional planning and mission

President Carlson announced the appointment of Terry Sparkes, Luther associate dean and associate professor of religion, as dean for institutional planning and mission at Luther. She will begin her new duties Aug. 15.

Sparkes has served as associate dean and director of curriculum development and college honors since 2008. The position of dean for institutional planning and mission is a re-visioned position that combines elements of Sparkes' current portfolio with additional responsibilities for strategic planning, college accreditation and church relations.

COLLEGE OPERATIONS

Library online catalog upgrade

On Monday, Aug. 1, the Library will upgrade its online catalog and search tool, Worldcat. The upgraded version offers several advantages, including more intuitive and robust search options, better mobile functionality and an updated interface. This version will search all the same resources: books, articles, videos, recordings and more. Please report any issues, concerns, suggestions and compliments to Freeda Brook <fbrook> or any of the library staff.

Spring 2016 departmental course evaluation reports available

Dean's Office staff and department heads can now access departmental course evaluation reports. For a reminder on how to find these reports, please see Spring 2016 Departmental Course Evaluation Reports Available on the ITS blog.

Regents Center parking lot maintenance 

The Regents Center parking lot will be closed this week for seal coating. The work is expected to take several days and all vehicles must be removed from the lot during this time.

Legends Center closure

The upstairs/balcony of the Legends Center will close at 3 p.m. Tuesday, July 26, and re-open at 6 a.m. Friday, July 29.

New policies for bidding and contracts

New policies for bidding and contracts have recently been reviewed by the Cabinet and approved by President Carlson. The updated versions can be found on Luther's policies website.

Colleague and my.luther unavailable Aug. 5-8

ITS will move Colleague from a Unidata database to a Microsoft SQL Server database Aug. 5-8. Colleague and my.luther will be unavailable starting at noon Aug. 5. Both services are expected to be available again Aug. 8. Visit the ITS blog for details.

Josefina Bakhita Gonçalves Soares '18, talks about how she is combining majors in economics and environmental studies and hopes to be able to promote development in a sustainable way when she returns to her home country of Timor-Leste.

Farewell reception for Ann Sponberg Peterson July 28

After 11 years as director of Development, Ann Sponberg Peterson's last day at Luther will be Friday, July 29. Ann has been appointed associate vice president for advancement at Gustavus Adolphus College, her alma mater, and will begin her new job in August. Faculty, staff, alumni and friends are invited to attend a farewell reception in her honor from 2-4 p.m. Thursday, July 28, in Hammarskjold Lounge. There will be a brief program at 3 p.m. Please join the Alumni and Development offices as we thank Ann for her exemplary work and faithful service to Luther College.

Brad Chamberlain served as a mentor at the 2016 Summer Leadership Institute for STEM Faculty that was held July 12-17 in Adamstown, Maryland. The institute, sponsored by Project Kaleidoscope and the Association of American Colleges and Universities, is designed for early and mid-career STEM faculty engaged in leading projects aimed at transforming undergraduate STEM education in their classrooms, departments and institutions.

Andy Hageman presented his paper "Space-Alien Space: The Weird Ecologies of 'Under the Skin'" via video conference at the Defying Genre: Michel Faber Conference hosted by Inverness College UHI in Scotland on Friday, July 22. The conference included Faber as well as fellow scholars.

Xiao Hu and Du Huang recently served as master class presenters and adjudicators at the 2016 Shanghai International Piano Festival and Institute.

The poster "Imagine Walking in Our Shoes" will appear in the 2016 University and College Designers Association show. Jon Lund, Aaron Lurth, Ellen Modersohn and Michael Bartels collaborated to create the award-winning poster for Luther's international recruiting efforts. Just 17 percent of the 1,100 entries in the design competition were chosen for the show. The poster will be on display during the 2016 UCDA Design Conference Sept. 24-27 in San Antonio, Texas.
