Service of Dedication

Faculty, staff, spouses and guests are invited to attend the annual Service of Dedication at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 27, in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall. President Carlson will deliver her State of the College address and new faculty and staff will be introduced. Offices are allowed to close for the dedication service so that as many employees as possible can attend. A reception will follow.

Interim adviser for Development 

As Luther searches for a new vice president for development, an interim adviser/consultant has been secured to assure a smooth transition. Mark Kronholm has 36 years of experience in development. He served as vice president and chief development officer at Bethel University, Carleton College and Macalester College, and for the past 10 years he has worked as an independent consultant for institutions experiencing transitions in leadership of their development office. Kronholm began his work at Luther in early August.  During this interim period he plans on spending a couple of days on campus each week. His office is in Loyalty Hall, second floor, 387-1862.

Listening Posts: Center for Ethics and Public Life

President Carlson invites faculty and staff to reflect on the mission of the Center for Ethics and Public Life by coming to one of two listening posts: Monday, Aug. 31 at 1 p.m. or Friday, Sept. 4 at 4 p.m. Both sessions will be held in Hovde Lounge. Fall semester Opening Convocation 

Join the community in celebrating the start of a new academic year and welcoming the class of 2019. Opening Convocation will be held at 9:40 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 3, in the Center for Faith and Life. The speaker is Cristina Henríquez, author of "The Book of Unknown Americans," the 2015 summer reading. Henríquez will speak about the concept of identity and address common narratives about immigration in her Luther College Opening Convocation Lecture "Finding Ourselves in Stories."

All students faculty and staff are encouraged to participate. If possible, offices should close so all can attend.

Parking announcement

On Saturday, Aug. 29, Luther will be filled with excitement as first year students, and their families, experience the joy of moving into our residence halls.  For many, this will be an emotional experience as the students embark on a new adventure and parents see them on their way.

In order to help facilitate the move-in process, we will be reserving parking areas near the halls. Special parking restrictions go into effect at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 28. The small parking lot south of Ylvisaker and the lot north of Valders will be reserved for vehicles unloading for move in. High Street between Jenson-Noble and Campus House will be designated as a one way street, west to east, so move-in vehicles may park on the north side of the street. There will be no parking on the south side of the street. Faculty, staff and students are asked to refrain from parking in these areas. Thank you for your cooperation in extending this welcome to the new members of the Luther community.

COLLEGE OPERATIONS

Norse Key password change

All Luther faculty, staff and students must change their Norse Key password prior to the start of the fall 2015 semester at norsekey.luther.edu. This change is necessary in order for faculty, staff and students to continue using Luther's classroom podium workstations, lab workstations, classroom workstations, systems and other IT resources through time. LIS is making a system-wide change in the underlying authentication system and this impacts all of Luther's academic and administration systems. Center Stage Series subscription package deadline Aug. 28

August 28 is the deadline to purchase discounted package tickets for Center Stage Series events. Center Stage Series subscribers can build an individualized entertainment season by choosing tickets to a full range of radiant performances—from poignant letters from soldiers serving in the Middle East to a comedic vaudeville-esque performance, from popular Broadway show tunes to classical music, and from Chinese cinematic music to Celtic melodies, CSS has something to engage every audience member.

EVENTS

SoDa Club fall session

Song and Dance Club is a community choir program for kids in grades K-8. All choirs rehearse 5:30-6:30 p.m. Monday evenings at Baker Commons. SoDa Club's mission is to offer children healthy vocal production, music literacy, movement and artistic music-making while giving Luther education students hands-on experience. Come celebrate at the TRIO Open House

In celebration of our name change and continued funding, the TRIO Achievement Program (formerly Student Support Services) invites all faculty and staff to an Open House on Monday, Aug. 31. Please stop by anytime between noon and 4 p.m. for food and fellowship outside the TRIO office (lower level of Preus Library). 

Luther has received a $1.5 million grant for its TRIO Achievement Program. The program provides first-generation and income-eligible Luther students with holistic, individualized support and comprehensive programming that promotes their academic success, personal development and sense of community. The grant from the U.S. Department of Education covers a five-year period starting Sept. 1. 

Faculty Artist Series: Music faculty showcase Sept. 6

Featuring a broad variety of works performed by critically acclaimed musicians, the Luther College music faculty will present a showcase concert at 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 6, in the Main Hall of the Center for Faith and Life on the Luther campus. The performance is the opening event of the 2015-16 faculty concert season at Luther and is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Luther swim team lessons

Luther's swimming and diving team will once again offer swim lessons this fall.

SAC Spotlight presents ComedySportz Aug. 30

Hailed as a fast-paced comedy show fun for all ages, the Luther Student Activities Council invites the community to come laugh at, interact with and determine the winner of ComedySportz at 8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 30, in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall. ComedySportz is improvisational comedy played as a "sport" by members of the World Comedy League. The event is open to the public with no charge for admission.

'Route 66' by Bleicher to be displayed at Luther College

With much of American life revolving around roads and mobility, Steven Bleicher, professor, author and mixed media artist, celebrates the American zeal for collecting mementos to remember travels in his exhibit "Route 66" on display Sept. 2-Oct. 9, in Luther College's Center for Faith and Life. "My work is about remembrance and recollection. It's about our human need to capture a space in time, a fleeting moment and preserve it," Bleicher said.

SAC Spotlight presents hypnotist Jim Wand Sept. 4

With more than 9,000 professional engagements to his name and a lengthy career spent building a fiercely entertaining repertoire, Master Hypnotist Jim Wand returns to Luther College at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4, in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall. SAC Spotlight presents Hembree Sept. 5

Perhaps the most accurate way to describe Hembree's sound is a 1980s pop band that decided to start an Americana rock band, but they forgot to tell the keyboard player. With this unique sound, Hembree will take the stage at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 5, at Marty's in the Dahl Centennial Union on the Luther College campus. As I recently finished one chapter to move to another, I leave with an immense amount of gratitude for all of you at Luther. Job openings

Student Life case manager: The Student Life Office seeks candidates for this 10-month, 20 hour/week position. The successful candidate will have experience working with and supporting students through personal and academic concerns, especially at-risk, first-year students in the college environment. The case manager will work across multiple campus departments to identify resources, action plans and success benchmarks for individual cases. Effective written and oral communication skills are a necessity for this position as is the ability to quickly develop strong, helping relationships with students. Preferred experiences include a history of working with and advising college students and the ability to speak Spanish.

Book Shop marketing and merchandise buyer: .83FTE, benefit eligible, position of Book Shop Marketing and Merchandise Buyer will coordinate all promotions and events, maintain book shop web site, and purchase trade books and gift items. Excellent marketing, communication and organizational skills and retail experience with a strong desire to provide a high standard of customer service, as well as a high school diploma or equivalent, are required. Preference given to those with strong computer skills, including data entry, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and Photoshop. Position also requires the ability to lift 50 pounds and move oversized boxes, the ability to stand for extended periods of time, and the availability to work approximately one Saturday per month.

Coordinator of music recruitment: Full-time position charged with maximizing Luther's recruitment efforts with respect to prospective students who have an interest in music as an academic major and/or an activity. Bachelor's degree is required. Candidates should have experience with and an understanding of music participation at the collegiate level and excellent verbal and written communication skills. Experience in sales, marketing, communications and higher education is highly desirable.

Administrative assistant: .83FTE administrative assistant to provide support to the biology and chemistry departments in Sampson Hoffland Laboratories, and the environmental studies and sustainability programs and physics and psychology departments in Valders Hall of Science. High school diploma or equivalent and five or more years administrative assistant experience required.

EDITORIAL COMMENT

And finally...

August 25 is National Banana Split day. The origin of this delicious ice cream treat has been disputed for more than 100 years. Although Wilmington, Ohio, claims to have invented the sundae, the National Ice Cream Retailers Association certified Latrobe, Pennsylvania, as the birth place of the banana split. David Strickler, 23-year-old apprentice pharmacist, invented the sundae in 1904 and sold it for 10 cents, twice the price of other sundaes. With a scoop each of chocolate, vanilla and strawberry ice cream, surrounded by a banana, topped with nuts and chocolate, strawberry and pineapple syrups, covered in whipped cream with a Maraschino cherry, the traditional banana split will always be a classic. Celebrate this holiday by grabbing ice cream at the Whippy Dip, Sugar Bowl or Culver's!
