'Route 66' by Bleicher to be displayed at Luther College

With much of American life revolving around roads and mobility, Steven Bleicher, professor, author and mixed media artist, celebrates the American zeal for collecting mementos to remember travels in his exhibit "Route 66" on display Sept. 2-Oct. 9, in the Center for Faith and Life. "My work is about remembrance and recollection. It's about our human need to capture a space in time, a fleeting moment and preserve it," Bleicher said.

MPR to broadcast original works by Luther composition students starting Sept. 3

World-renowned string quintet Sybarite5 worked with student composers at Luther during fall semester 2014. The ensemble was so impressed with the talent and expressiveness of the six students that Sybarite5 performed the student works in a concert titled "Six for Five: New Works by Luther Students for Sybarite5" in the CFL Recital Hall on Nov. 13, 2014. Over the next several weeks Classical MPR will broadcast interview highlights and the student-composed pieces. The first installment is 3 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 3. Listen online or tune in locally to FM 89.5.

Lynn Williams retirement celebration Sept. 4

SAC Spotlight presents hypnotist Jim Wand Sept. 4

With more than 9,000 professional engagements to his name and a lengthy career spent building a fiercely entertaining repertoire, Master Hypnotist Jim Wand returns to Luther College at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4, in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall. SAC Spotlight presents Hembree Sept. 5

Perhaps the most accurate way to describe Hembree's sound is a 1980s pop band that decided to start an Americana rock band, but they forgot to tell the keyboard player. With this unique sound, Hembree will take the stage at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 5, in Marty's. Tickets are $10 and may be purchased online or via the Luther Ticket Office.

Faculty Artist Series: Music faculty showcase Sept. 6

Featuring a broad variety of works performed by critically acclaimed musicians, the Luther College music faculty will present a showcase concert at 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 6, in the CFL Main Hall. The performance is the opening event of the 2015-16 faculty concert season at Luther and is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Luther alumnus Tuan Phan's photography on display Sept. 7-Oct. 9

While Vietnam is a unique and culturally diverse country, many aspects of it elude the public eye. Luther alumnus Tuan Phan's art exhibit, "Photos of Vietnam," explores sides of the country not often seen. The exhibit, on display Sept. 7-Oct. 9 in Preus Library, is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Faculty/staff pilates

Join Bridgette Mitchell for a six-week pilates session Sept. 7-Oct. 19. Class is offered Mondays from 12-1 p.m. in Studio II in the CFA. Modifications are offered for all fitness levels. Luther celebrates Fall Community Day Sept. 12

Faculty Artist Series: Michael Chesher clarinet recital Sept. 12

Michael Chesher and special guest clarinetist Tod Kerstetter from Kansas State University will collaborate with Jessica Paul, piano, and Lynne Postudensek Hart, clarinet, on a recital at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, in Luther's Noble Recital Hall. The program, consisting of varied works for one, two or three clarinets, bass clarinet and basset horn, is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Paideia Texts and Issues lecture: Anna Peterson Sept. 15

In the opening lecture of the 2015-16 Paideia Texts and Issues series, Anna Peterson, Luther College assistant professor of history, will present the lecture, "Narrating change: Norwegian women's abortion letters," held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15, in the CFL Recital Hall. The lecture will be followed by a reception in Qualley Lounge. Both the lecture and the reception are open to the public with no charge for admission.

Student Life case manager: The Student Life Office seeks candidates for this 10-month, 20 hour/week position. The successful candidate will have experience working with and supporting students through personal and academic concerns, especially at-risk, first-year students in the college environment. The case manager will work across multiple campus departments to identify resources, action plans and success benchmarks for individual cases. Effective written and oral communication skills are a necessity for this position as is the ability to quickly develop strong, helping relationships with students. Preferred experiences include a history of working with and advising college students and the ability to speak Spanish.

Book Shop marketing and merchandise buyer: .83FTE, benefit eligible, position of Book Shop Marketing and Merchandise Buyer will coordinate all promotions and events, maintain book shop web site, and purchase trade books and gift items. Excellent marketing, communication and organizational skills and retail experience with a strong desire to provide a high standard of customer service, as well as a high school diploma or equivalent, are required. Preference given to those with strong computer skills, including data entry, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and Photoshop. Position also requires the ability to lift 50 pounds and move oversized boxes, the ability to stand for extended periods of time, and the availability to work approximately one Saturday per month.

Coordinator of music recruitment: Full-time position charged with maximizing Luther's recruitment efforts with respect to prospective students who have an interest in music as an academic major and/or an activity. Bachelor's degree is required. Candidates should have experience with and an understanding of music participation at the collegiate level and excellent verbal and written communication skills. Experience in sales, marketing, communications and higher education is highly desirable.

Administrative assistant: .83FTE administrative assistant to provide support to the biology and chemistry departments in Sampson Hoffland Laboratories, and the environmental studies and sustainability programs and physics and psychology departments in Valders Hall of Science. Robert Christman recently received two two-month grants for further work on his current research project, a study of the Protestant Reformation's first executions and their historical impact. One grant came from a private German foundation, the Gerda Henkel Stiftung; the other is from the German Academic Exchange Service.

Lindsey Row-Heyveld published "Reading Batman, Writing X-Men: Superpowers and Disabilities in the First-Year Seminar" in the October 2015 issue of Pedagogy. The issue is available online.
