MPR to broadcast original works by Luther composition students starting Sept. 3

World-renowned string quintet Sybarite5 worked with student composers at Luther during fall semester 2014. The ensemble was so impressed with the talent and expressiveness of the six students that Sybarite5 performed the student works in a concert titled "Six for Five: New Works by Luther Students for Sybarite5" in the CFL Recital Hall on Nov. 13, 2014. Over the next several weeks Classical MPR will broadcast interview highlights and the student-composed pieces. The first installment aired Sept. 3. Listen online or tune in locally to FM 89.5.

Frydenlund exhibit 'Object and Ideas' featured at The Pump House in La Crosse through Sept. 26

The Pump House Regional Art Center in La Crosse is featuring an exhibition of new works by Sarah Frydenlund in its Kader Gallery through Sept. 26. Through drawing, writing, and a collected archive of digital images and objects, these two and three-dimensional works explore the balance of relationships of personal and cultural perceptions through both scientific and lyrical language.

Merritt's works on display at Luther through Oct. 18

Data is ubiquitous in the modern world. Facts and figures fly from immediate sources and countless numbers clutter people's lives, losing meaning to abstract ideas. Richard Merritt, Luther College professor of art, investigates the visual principles of big data through a series of paintings and drawings in his art exhibit "Schemata."

"Schemata" is on display Sept. 7-Oct. 18 in the Kristin Wigley-Fleming Fine Arts Gallery of the Center for the Arts on the Luther campus. A gallery reception will be held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17.

Luther alumnus Tuan Phan's photography on display Sept. 7-Oct. 9

While Vietnam is a unique and culturally diverse country, many aspects of it elude the public eye. Luther alumnus Tuan Phan's art exhibit, "Photos of Vietnam," explores sides of the country not often seen. The exhibit is on display Sept. 7-Oct. 9 in Preus Library.

A reception for Phan will be held from 4-5:50 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, in the Hovde Room of Preus Library. The reception, hosted by Phan's sister Clara Knudson and her husband Karl, is in conjunction with Phan's exhibition. The reception and exhibit are open to the public with no charge for admission.

Reception for Pastor Amy Zalk Larson Sept. 10

Luther invites high school students to campus for Science Exploration Day on Saturday, Sept. 12. The day is designed to provide students with a hands-on laboratory experience alongside Luther science professors and students. Faculty Artist Series: Michael Chesher, clarinet

Michael Chesher and special guest clarinetist Tod Kerstetter from Kansas State University will collaborate with Jessica Paul, piano, and Lynne Postudensek Hart, clarinet, on a recital at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, in Luther's Noble Recital Hall. Luther to host organ scholar John Keys Sept. 13

Vocalists 13 years and older are invited to audition to sing on stage with the stars of "100 Years of Broadway." Two winners and up to 10 runners-up will be selected by a panel, comprised of the producers and singers of the show, and Neil Berg himself, for a chance to sing on stage with the Broadway and receive complimentary tickets to a performance in the 2015-16 Center Stage season.

Faculty Research Symposium Sept. 19

The third annual Faculty Research Symposium will begin at 9:15 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, in Valders 206. Brian Canton's article, "The Transition from Animal Capital to Land Capital in Colonial Punjab, 1850–1900," was published in Capitalism Nature Socialism, Vol. 26, Issue 3, 2015.

Todd Green participated on an author panel at the annual meeting of the Islamic Society of North America in Chicago, on Sept. 5. The panel profiled authors of recently published books on Islam.

Keith Lesmeister's short story, "What It Looks Like," was published in the U.K. journal Literary Commune. His essay, "One Hundred Dollars," was published in Drafthorse.

Luther College has been awarded a five-year federal grant for its' TRIO Achievement Program. TRIO provides participating students with holistic, individualized support and comprehensive programming that promotes their academic success, personal development and sense of community. The grant, which covers a five-year period, allows Luther to continue and to enhance the TRIO program. Luther will receive $284,754 during the first year of the grant, and the total five-year amount is projected at approximately $1.5 million. The Luther College TRIO Achievement Program currently serves 185 students, including nearly 60 students entering Luther this fall. New this year, incoming TRIO students have access to a course that serves as the foundation for their learning and development over the next four years.

Luther has received a $20,000 grant from CIC-NetVUE, the Council of Independent Colleges-Network for Vocation in Undergraduate Education. The NetVUE Chaplaincy Implementation Grant will support a one-year series of student-faculty-staff retreats focusing on the exploration of vocation.Specifically, these retreats connect College Ministries with the Career Center and faculty advising as they work with sophomore students, with a focus on those who have not yet declared an academic major.The first small group retreat for selected staff and faculty who are fairly new to the college, was held in August and led by Brenda Ranum, director of the Career Center; Mike Blair, campus pastor; and Ann Landstrom, strengths program coordinator; with special speaker Nancy Barry, professor of English. Ruth Kath is serving at the CIC-NetVUE project director.
