ANNOUNCEMENTS

2015 fall semester enrollment data

• Our new registered student total is 653 (624 first-year students, 27 transfer students, two non-degree students).

• U.S. students of color total 242 (10.4 percent of total enrollment), and international students total 147 (6.3 percent of total enrollment).

• Thirty-nine states (including Iowa) and 65 countries (including U.S.) are represented in our total enrollment.

• Student enrollment full-time equivalent (FTE) is 2,319.

• Forty-one percent of our total enrollment reports Lutheran as their religious affiliation.

• First-year to second-year persistence for the 2014 first-year student cohort is 84.8 percent, first-year to third-year persistence for the 2013 first-year student cohort is 79.9 percent, and first-year to fourth-year persistence for the 2012 first-year cohort is 81.5 percent.

• Our most recent four-year graduation rate (2011 first-year student cohort graduating by Aug. 31, 2015) is 70.8 percent.

• Our most recent five-year graduation rate (2010 first-year student cohort graduating by Aug. 31, 2015) is 78.2 percent.

• Our most recent six-year graduation rate (2009 first-year student cohort graduating by Aug. 31, 2015) is 77.5 percent.

President Carlson has appointed the following individuals to the College Ministries Call Committee: Andrew Last (chair), Gifty Arthur '17, Carter Johnson '16, Martin Klammer, Kristin Swanson, Madeline Jungbauer, Ryan Gjerde and Karen Martin-Schramm. Mike Blair will serve as an ex-officio member.

Health Service flu clinics

Friday Oct. 2: 9-11:30 a.m., Health Service
Monday Oct. 5: 2-4 p.m., Union
Tuesday Oct. 20: 2:30-4:30 p.m., Regents Center

The Flu vaccine is available at Health Service any time during office hours, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Monday-Friday.

Cost is $25 for the injection, $30 for nasal mist. Staff/faculty check or cash. Students can charge to their student account.

'Christmas at Luther' tickets for faculty/staff available Oct. 1

Faculty and staff can secure their tickets for "Christmas at Luther 2015: Savior of the Nation, Come" beginning at 9 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 1. Faculty/staff who have not yet set up an online ticketing account should contact the Ticket Office, 387-1357. For more information, go to the Christmas at Luther faculty/staff ticket website.

New at luther.edu

Lindsey Ryan '16 spent the summer interning for a program that provides healthy food for low-income individuals over the age of 60. Read about how the experience contributed to her learning as a health and fitness promotion major. Also, read about the documentary and print project that Aidan Spencer '18 and Jacqueline Wilkie are working on regarding Nordic Choir's first international tour in 1967.

Book Shop deadline approaches

The Book Shop will begin textbook returns to wholesalers and publishers the first week in October. Faculty and students who have not purchased all of their course materials for this term should please be sure to do this soon. Thank you.

National Student Day celebration in the Book Shop

The Book Shop will honor Luther students on National Student Day, Thursday, Oct. 8, for their volunteer efforts and work in making the world a better place. Join us that day and "Dare to Take the Challenge." Try your luck at testing Jelly Belly flavors and receive an extra 10 percent off already low-priced clearance items.

National Student Day contest

Norse Mail problem and workaround

Norse Mail currently has a bug that prevents it from consistently adding all members of a contact group to an email (i.e., there are 10 people in the group and only nine are attached as recipients). Google is aware of the defect and working on a fix. Fortunately, there are workarounds. For details, see Norse Mail Workaround for Emailing Contact Groups.

Traffic Hearing Board seeks new member

Looking for a staff person with a sense of humor who likes a good time and will commit to being on the Traffic Hearing Board. The board meets for an hour each month to review parking citation appeals submitted by students, faculty and staff. If interested, contact Judy, <schnitju>. Dining Services coupons available

Did you know you can order coupons for Nordic Brew shakes, Marty's cookies, Peace Brunch and more? All Dining Service location coupons must be administered through the Dining Services Office and can be ordered online. Orders will be processed within 48 business hours and the purchaser will be notified when they are mailed through the SPO. Coupons can be purchased with a CBORD number, cash, check or dining dollars. LED video display and statistic panels donated

Thanks to a generous leadership gift from Kent '57 and Mitzi Evenstad of Monona, Wisconsin, Luther has purchased an indoor LED video display board and statistic panels with electronic captions to enhance the existing scoreboard in the Regents Center gymnasium. The Norse Athletic Association provided additional funding support. The video display and statistic boards were installed in early September, and will be phased into use over the next year.

Chad Sonka baritone recital Sept. 29

Chad Sonka, Luther College alumni guest lecturer in music, will perform a baritone recital at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29, in the Noble Recital Hall. The recital, open to the public with no charge for admission, features works of composers such as Vincenzo Bellini, Gustav Holst, Walter Damrosch, Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy and Robert Schumann. 

Connie Bergstrom retirement party Sept. 30

The join the Book Shop staff as we thank Connie Bergstrom for 36 years of service to Luther College. A reception for Connie will take place from 9:30-11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30, in the Nobel Room.

Luther hosts legendary jazz pianist

Legendary jazz pianist Danilo Perez, along with his quintet members, known as the Danilo Perez Quintet, will perform "Panama 500" as part of Luther College's Center Stage Series at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2, in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall. Tickets, on sale in Luther's Ticket Office, are $24 for adults, $22 for seniors age 65 and over and $15 for youth ages 4-18, and may be purchased online at http://www.tickets.luther.edu/.

FAS: Lassetter, Kanakis, Paul and guests

Performing with guest artists John Hines and Dmitri Vorobiev from the University of Northern Iowa, Luther faculty members Jacob Lassetter, Karen Kanakis and Jessica Paul will perform a recital at 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, in the Noble Recital Hall.

The recital is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Luther to host Iowa Connection Trio

Luther's music department will host the Iowa Connection Trio in a guest recital at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 4, in the Noble Recital Hall. The recital is open to the public with no charge for admission. The Iowa Connection Trio consists of Xiao Hu, Luther College associate professor of music, piano, and Amanda McCandless, clarinet, and Yu-Ting Tina Su, horn, both from the University of Northern Iowa.

'Music in the Shape of a Pear' Oct. 4

Luther's "Music in the Shape of a Pear" event features a diverse collection of new music at 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 4, in the Noble Recital Hall. The performance is open to the public with no charge for admission and features two world premieres by Decorah native Philip Wharton and Luther alumnus Steve Smith, along with works by Gary Schocker, Greg Patillo, Luiz Bonfá, Robert Dick, Jennifer Higdon, and Oistein Sommerfeldt. 

The works will be performed by Luther alumni flutists Daniel Gallagher '14, Rachel Haug Root  '10, Tara Meade '08 and Bianca Najera '13, with Juan Tony Guzman '90, on guitar. 

Luther College Piano Quartet Oct. 4

The Luther College Piano Quartet will present a recital at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 4, in the Noble Recital Hall. The recital is open to the public with no charge for admission. The program includes late 19th and early 20th century piano quartets from Spain, the Czech Republic and France by composers Joaquin Turina, Josef Suk, and Gabriel Fauré.

The Luther College Piano Quartet features Spencer Martin, viola; Miko Kominami, piano; Igor Kalnin, violin; and Cole Tutino, cello.

SAC Open Mic Night Oct. 7

Kicking off Homecoming week, SAC Homecoming will host Open Mic Night at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7 in Marty's. The event is open to the public with no charge for admission. Open Mic Night gives talented students the opportunity to showcase their abilities for their peers.

Jonathan Rattner guest lecture and film screening

Serving as artist-in-residence for the 2016 Oneota Film Festival, Jonathan Rattner will present a guest lecture and film screening at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7, in the Valders Hall of Science Room 206 on the Luther College campus. The lecture and screening are open to the public with no charge for admission.

Opera alumni to host career talk

Luther alumni Andrew Stenson '08 and Emily Fons '06 will present career talks at Luther in October. Stenson will speak at 9:40 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, and Fons will speak at 9:40 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 15. Both career talks will be held in the Noble Recital Hall. Both events are open to the public with no charge for admission. 

SAC Flamingo Ball tickets on sale

Luther College Student Activities Council invites the public to this year's SAC Flamingo Ball. Come celebrate and dance to the sounds of variety band The Sevilles at 9 p.m. homecoming Saturday, Oct. 17, in the Regents Center Main Gym. Tickets are $10 and may be purchased online at tickets.luther.edu.

Luther College Dance Marathon is in search of Miracle Families. Any family with a member that has been treated at the University of Iowa Children's Hospital is invited to participate.
