Luther announces lawn spray days 

Luther will spray the lawns with herbicides to provide well-maintained, visually attractive grounds for students, employees and visitors and to control undesirable weeds on athletic fields. Weather permitting, the date for spraying is the evening of Friday, Oct. 9, with Saturday, Oct. 10 and Sunday, Oct. 11, set as back up days as needed.

In response to community requests, Ivan Hackman, Luther manager of environmental services, has established a no-spray "buffer zone" that will be observed around the pool lawn so that the play area for children is protected. Other no-spray "buffer zones" include the dike areas, edible landscape areas and the Sustainability House. Spraying will take place after normal work hours and on weekends.

Luther College Dance Marathon seeks Miracle Families

Luther College Dance Marathon is in search of Miracle Families. Any family with a member that has been treated at the University of Iowa Children's Hospital is invited to participate. Throughout the year our organization seeks to build relationships with individual families in the area and build a supportive community made up of students and families alike. SAC Open Mic Night Oct. 7

Kicking off Homecoming week, SAC Homecoming will host Open Mic Night at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7 in Marty's. The event is open to the public with no charge for admission. Open Mic Night gives talented students the opportunity to showcase their abilities for their peers.

Jonathan Rattner guest lecture and film screening

Serving as artist-in-residence for the 2016 Oneota Film Festival, Jonathan Rattner will present a guest lecture and film screening at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7, in the Valders Room 206. The lecture and screening are open to the public with no charge for admission.

Opera alumni to host career talk

Luther alumni Andrew Stenson '08 and Emily Fons '06 will present career talks at Luther in October. Stenson will speak at 9:40 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, and Fons will speak at 9:40 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 15. Both career talks will be held in the Noble Recital Hall. Both events are open to the public with no charge for admission.

Luther Emeriti Colloquium Oct. 8

The second meeting of the Luther College Emeriti Colloquium will take place at 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, in the Mott Room. Mark and Lois Finanger will reflect on their 28 years of living and teaching in Saudi Arabia.

Student recitals

Logan Larson, senior from Waukee, Iowa, will present a composition recital at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, in the Noble Recital Hall. A reception will follow the recital. Both the recital and reception are open to the public.

VPA presents 'Love and Information' 

The Visual and Performing Arts department presents the play "Love and Information" by Caryl Churchill and directed by Bob Larson. The performances, held in the Jewel Theatre, are at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15; 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16; and 1:30 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17.  

Center for Sustainable Communities cooking class Oct. 16

Fall is here, which means soup season has officially begun! Come learn how to make borscht, a Ukrainian dish made from beets, from noon-1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16, in Valders 379. The instructor for this class is Maryna Bazylevych. Register for the class online.

SAC Flamingo Ball tickets on sale

Student Activities Council invites the public to this year's SAC Flamingo Ball. Come celebrate and dance to the sounds of variety band The Sevilles at 9 p.m. homecoming Saturday, Oct. 17, in the Regents Center Main Gym. Tickets are $10 and may be purchased online at tickets.luther.edu.

MKTO tickets on sale Oct. 6 

American musical duo MKTO will perform at Luther College at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30, in the Regents Center. Doors open at 7 p.m.  Tickets for the performance are $30 and are available for purchase beginning Tuesday, Oct. 6.
