COLLEGE OPERATIONS
Luther awards six alumni with Distinguished Service Awards
President Carlson presented the Luther Distinguished Service Award to six alumni Friday, Oct. 16, at the college's annual Homecoming Alumni Dinner. The Distinguished Service Award, one of the highest honors bestowed by the college, is given in recognition of success and achievements in professional fields, service to society, contributions to community, and loyalty and service to Luther.
Recipients of the 2015 Distinguished Service Award are Ann (Christensen) Beatty '75, Karen (Wilken) Braun '85, Shannon (Miller) Duval '95, Mary (Christianson) Hansen '80, Mark Magnuson '75, and Mary Townswick '75.
November staff meeting
The agenda for the November staff meeting includes presentations on Norse athletics, Title IX, and music organizations and tours. The meeting will be held in Peace Dining Room at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11, and again at 9 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 12. All staff are strongly encouraged to attend one of the two sessions.
Hand deliver time cards to Payroll by noon Nov. 23
The college will be closed Nov. 26 and 27 in observance of Thanksgiving. This holiday schedule limits time for processing bi-weekly payroll for the pay period ending Nov. 20 with a pay date of Dec. 2. Therefore, timecards for the pay period ending Nov. 20 will be due in the Payroll Office by noon Monday, Nov. 23.

International Education Week
The Diversity Center, the Center for Global Learning, and ISAA are partnering to offer a full week of activities to celebrate International Education Week, Nov. 15-21. This year's theme is "International Education: Advancing Access for All." For more information about the celebration, go to the Diversity Center website.
Thanksgiving dinner at Pulpit Rock Brewing Company
Luther College alumni and owners of Pulpit Rock Brewing Company, Pete and Kari Espinosa, invite Luther students to a free Thanksgiving dinner from 12-4 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 26, at Pulpit Rock Brewing Company. The dinner is split into four seatings to allow more people to attend; students may sign up to attend the dinner from noon-1 p.m., 1-2 p.m., 2-3 p.m., or 3-4 p.m. Students must sign up for the dinner in the Luther Diversity Center or online by Thursday, Nov. 19. No alcohol will be served at the event.
Automated workstation patching
On Wednesday, Nov. 11, LIS will begin to deploy important software updates to all faculty and staff workstations. You will be prompted when an update becomes available and will be given the option to install immediately or delay until a later time or date. Initially, updates will be for Java only; we will begin patching additional items (Flash, OS updates, etc.) later this fall. More information on automated patching is available online.
Sustainability tip: cool is clean
Using cold water to wash clothes reduces energy consumption by roughly 90 percent compared to using hot water. Cold water has additional benefits for fabrics and cleanliness as well. Preserve the integrity of clothing by avoiding hot water, which has been shown to weaken threads. Cold water prevents stains from setting into fabric and most modern detergents are designed to function in lower temperatures. Save money, time and clothing by making the sustainable decision to use cold water.
United Way campaign update
Thank you to everyone who has donated to the United Way of Winneshiek County. United Way is assisting 20 agencies who ensure people in need can eat, stay warm, keep a roof over their heads and afford other basics. If you would like to contribute, please give completed forms to Human Resources. Need a form? Please email Ellen, <modeel01>, or stop by the Document Center. A prize drawing among donors will be held Nov. 20. Luther contributions usually make up 12–15 percent of the campaign goal. Currently we are at nine percent.
Apply for LFA funding by Dec. 1
The Lecture and Fine Arts Committee has pooled the remaining funds in each of its funding categories into one general LFA fund and is now accepting applications for event funding. Applicants whose applications were previously declined can revise and resubmit their events and applications. Applications must be completed online by Dec. 1.
Norse Fan of the Game
Know a young kid who would enjoy being the Norse Fan of the Game? Email their name and contact information to Alex Smith, associate athletic director, at <smithale>. The Norse Fan of the Game will get to spend time with Luther student-athletes and be introduced at a home event.
Campus Programming reminder
All public events are to be planned with the Campus Programming Office in order to both secure time on our campus calendar and to reserve a facility. All events, or rooms needed for any use, including non-public meetings, can be reserved by submitting a Reservation Form. Events are not to be advertised until finalized with Campus Programming.

Vanessa Wiest was the winner of the WALKtober challenge and will receive a new pair of shoes for all of her walking. Participants achieved 957 days of walking during the month of October for a total of more than 53,600 minutes.

'Unmasked' photography exhibit opens Nov. 12
Freelance photojournalist Lynn Johnson depicts recovering veterans of the Middle East wars in her large-scale photography exhibit "Unmasked: Soldiers Heal from Blast Force Damage," on display Nov. 12 to Jan. 10, in Preus Library. The exhibit is open to the public with no charge for admission.
A gallery reception will be held from 5-7:15 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 12, in the Hovde Room. A special invitation is extended to area veterans and their families to come together for the reception.
CSS presents 'Letters Home' Nov. 12
The Griffin Theatre Company will perform "Letters Home" at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 12, in the CFL Main Hall. Tickets, on sale in Luther's Ticket Office, are $25 for adults, $23 for seniors age 65 and over and $15 for youth ages 4-18; there will be a special discounted ticket price of $15 for men and women who have served or are currently serving in the military.
School Matinee Performance: 'Letters Home' Nov. 13
Luther's School Matinee Performance series presents the Griffin Theatre Company's "Letters Home" at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 13, in the CFL Main Hall. The performance, recommended for students in grades 6-12, brings to life actual letters written by soldiers serving in the Middle East and their families. The matinee performance is modified for school-age audiences.
Sustainable Communities cooking class Nov. 13
Throughout the year the Center for Sustainable Communities provides opportunities for students, faculty and staff to experience new cooking skills and techniques through a variety of classes. Try your hand at making the Ukrainian version of stuffed cabbage from noon-1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13, in Valders 379 with Maryna Bazylevych. Stuffed with a mixture of rice, meat and vegetables, and served warm, this may be the perfect dish to warm up those chilly fall evenings. Register for the class online.
Motionpoems showing Nov. 13
Minnesota poet and executive and artistic director of Motionpoems, Inc., Todd Boss, will present a showing of short film adaptations called motionpoems at 4 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13, in Valders 206. Motionpoems turn contemporary poems into short films. The films—each two or three minutes long—combine striking visuals with music and spoken word. The event is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Dorian Keyboard Festival Nov. 13-15
Luther will host the 58th annual Dorian Keyboard Festival Nov. 13-15, welcoming middle and high school piano and organ students from across the Midwest for a chance to experience Luther, work one-on-one with music faculty and perform in public recitals. The festival includes several recitals and performances which are open to the public with no charge for admission.
'Sunday in the Park with George' Nov. 13-21
The Visual and Performing Art department presents the musical "Sunday in the Park with George" by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine. The performances, held in the Jewel Theatre, are at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13; 1:30 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14; 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19; 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20; and 1:30 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 21. Tickets are $15 for general admission, $10 for students and children, and free with a Luther student ID.
Lost And Found concert Nov. 14
Lost And Found brings their interactive and improvisational concert experience to Luther in a farewell tour performance at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, in the CFL Main Hall. Sponsored by the Office for College Ministries and the Northeastern Iowa Synod, the concert is open to the public with a suggested donation of $10 for general admission tickets. There is no charge for admission with Luther ID. Tickets are available in Luther's Ticket Office. All proceeds will benefit the ELCA Walk for Water campaign.
APO Parent's Night Out
Alpha Phi Omega, a student-led service fraternity, will host a kid's activity night for children ages 5-11 from 6-9 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, in the Regents Center North Gym. The cost per family is $15/child for the family's first two children and $5 for each additional child. Directions, online registration and more information can be found online.
Symphony Orchestra concert Nov. 15
The Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Daniel Baldwin, will present their fall concert at 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 15, in the CFL Main Hall. The orchestra will perform selections from Bernstein, Arvo Pärt, Sergei Prokofiev and Dvorák. The concert will feature Namuun Tsend-Ayush '17, on violin. Tsend-Ayush is one of the winners of the Department of Music 2015 Concerto Competition. The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Luther College Woman's Club meets Nov. 17
The Luther College Woman's Club will meet at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17, in Peace Dining Room. Kirsten Roverud Heine will present "Project Care: Reaching Out to Support Area Foster Youth." Special music and refreshments complete the afternoon. All women are welcome.
Philharmonia concert Nov. 17
Featuring works of composers from France, America and Austria, Philharmonia will perform at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17, in the CFL Main Hall. Philharmonia will perform "Masques et Bergamasques" by Gabriel Fauré, an eclectic suite of shorter works by Aaron Copland and two works by Haydn. The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission.
'Solar for Non-Taxable Entities' workshop Nov. 18
The Center for Sustainable Communities and the Winneshiek Energy District will co-host a workshop on third-party power purchase agreements for non-profit entities from noon-4 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18, in Dahl Centennial Union.
Nationally known nursing advocate to present lecture Nov. 19
Sandy Summers, RN, MSN, MPH, will present the lecture, "Saving Lives: Why the Media's Portrayal of Nursing Puts Us All at Risk," at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, in the CFL Recital Hall. As the founder and executive director of the advocacy program The Truth About Nursing, Summers has generated a national media campaign to refute popular media's portrayal of nursing.
Fall Opera Scenes performances Nov. 20-21
Students in the fall 2015 opera workshop course will present "A Rendezvous in Old Germany" at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20, and 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, in the Noble Recital Hall. The performances are open to the public with no charge for admission. The program features opera scenes from works including Beethoven's "Fidelio," Mozart's "Le nozze di Figaro," Strauss' "Die Fledermaus" and Humperdinck's "Hansel and Gretel."
Chamber Orchestra concert Nov. 21
The Chamber Orchestra will perform in concert at 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, in the CFL Main Hall. The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission. Chamber Orchestra will perform Mozart's "Overture to Idomeneo," and Haydn's "Symphony No. 101 in D major." The orchestra will also perform Bach's "Concerto for Violin in A minor, BWV 1041," featuring Igor Kalnin, Luther visiting assistant professor of music, on violin.

Richard Cole presented a paper, "Erasmus Alberus and Reformation Satire: a Revisit," at the fall meeting of the Sixteenth Century Society and Conference in Vancouver, B.C. He also chaired a session titled "Sainthood, Holiness, and the Church: Defining and Remembering People, Places, and Churches." Cole has participated in four of the last five annual meetings of the SCSC. His papers have been published in professional journals and a book.
Three of David Faldet’s poems appear in the current number of "drafthorse: literary journal of work and no work."
Joseph Kremer, new assistant professor of sociology, had his manuscript titled, "Environmental Sentencing Disparities in the Pacific Northwest 2007-2011: A Story of Disparity," accepted for publication in the peer-reviewed journal "Sociological Perspectives." The edition should be published by mid-2016.
Jim Martin-Schramm's new book, "Earth Ethics: A Case Method Approach," has been published by Orbis Books. Co-authored with Daniel Spencer (University of Montana) and Laura Stivers (Dominican University), the book explores several complicated and interwoven problems in social and environmental ethics like population growth, material consumption and climate change; water rights and species conservation; genetic engineering and food security in Sub-Saharan Africa; and mountaintop removal coal mining and fossil fuel divestment.
