Campus closing early Nov. 25
We are pleased to announce that offices can close early and staff are permitted to leave work at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 25. Most non-exempt employees scheduled to work eight hours on Wednesday will work six hours and receive two hours of additional pay. Those employees who will have already worked their shift by 3 p.m. or those who must work their full shift because of the nature of their position will be given the option of taking two hours of paid time-off on a different day. If there are any questions, please contact your immediate supervisor or Human Resources.

Holiday closure, change to flex check processing
The campus will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 26, and Friday, Nov. 27, for the Thanksgiving holiday. Due to the Thanksgiving holiday, Midwest Group Benefits will not be processing flex checks the week of Nov. 23.
Hand deliver time cards to Payroll by noon Nov. 23
The college will be closed Nov. 26 and 27 in observance of Thanksgiving. This holiday schedule limits time for processing bi-weekly payroll for the pay period ending Nov. 20 with a pay date of Dec. 2. Therefore, timecards for the pay period ending Nov. 20 will be due in the Payroll Office by noon Monday, Nov. 23.

The Diversity Center, the Center for Global Learning and ISAA are partnering to offer a full week of activities to celebrate International Education Week, Nov. 15-21. Philanthropy Week in the Union Nov. 17-20
Students are invited come to the Union and write thank you notes to their individual endowed scholarship donors from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Nov. 17-20. Faculty and staff are encouraged to share the news of this event in hopes of getting personal notes to as many of Luther's generous donors as possible. There will be snacks, and participating students will have a chance to win an iPad Mini.
LASO food drive Nov. 17-24
Luther Athletes Serving Others is sponsoring a Thanksgiving food drive from Nov. 17-24. Food donations can be dropped off in a box labeled "LASO Food Drive" in the north and south foyers of the Regents Center. The finale of the food drive will be at the men's and women's basketball games on Tuesday, Nov. 24. Faculty and staff are invited to come out and give to a good cause while cheering on the Norse.

Thanksgiving dinner at Pulpit Rock Brewing Company
Luther College alumni and owners of Pulpit Rock Brewing Company, Pete and Kari Espinosa, invite Luther students to a free Thanksgiving dinner from noon-4 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 26, at Pulpit Rock Brewing Company. The dinner is split into four seatings to allow more people to attend; students may sign up to attend the dinner from noon-1 p.m., 1-2 p.m., 2-3 p.m., or 3-4 p.m. Students must sign up for the dinner in the Luther Diversity Center or online by Thursday, Nov. 19. No alcohol will be served at the event.

Sustainability news: Less for more
Luther College has cut its emissions of greenhouse gases in half since 2004 while expanding the physical footprint of the college. A significant amount of that expansion includes the construction of our state-of-the-art science building. Luther has reduced energy consumption per square foot by 34.5 percent in this time frame. This drastic reduction in energy intensity has come about through comprehensive campus plans to incorporate energy efficiency and renewable energy.
Apply for LFA funding by Dec. 1
The Lecture and Fine Arts Committee has pooled the remaining funds in each of its funding categories into one general LFA fund and is now accepting applications for event funding. Applicants whose applications were previously declined can revise and resubmit their events and applications. Applications must be completed online by Dec. 1.

National Cross Country Championships send-off event Nov. 19
Three outstanding student-athletes will represent Luther at the 2015 NCAA Division III National Cross Country Championships on Saturday, Nov. 21, in Winneconne, Wisconsin. Lauren Mordini '16, Tyler Broadwell '16 and Isaac Jensen '17 qualified for the championships, which will be hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Students, faculty and staff are invited to a national championships send-off event at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, in the Regents Center lobby. Nationally known nursing advocate to present lecture Nov. 19
Sandy Summers, RN, MSN, MPH, will present the lecture, "Saving Lives: Why the Media's Portrayal of Nursing Puts Us All at Risk," at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, in the CFL Recital Hall. As the founder and executive director of the advocacy program The Truth About Nursing, Summers has generated a national media campaign to refute popular media's portrayal of nursing.
'Sunday in the Park with George' Nov. 19-21
The Visual and Performing Art department presents the musical "Sunday in the Park with George" by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine. The performances, held in the Jewel Theatre, are at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19; 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20; and 1:30 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 21. Tickets are $15 for general admission, $10 for students and children, and free with a Luther student ID.

Fall Opera Scenes performances Nov. 20-21
Students in the fall 2015 opera workshop course will present "A Rendezvous in Old Germany" at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20, and 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, in the Noble Recital Hall. The performances are open to the public with no charge for admission. The program features opera scenes from works including Beethoven's "Fidelio," Mozart's "Le nozze di Figaro," Strauss' "Die Fledermaus" and Humperdinck's "Hansel and Gretel."
Donut Dash Fun Run Nov. 21
Luther College Dance Marathon is hosting a Donut Dash Fun Run at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 21. At a little over a mile, this race combines a competitive race with donut eating: every donut you eat during the race takes seconds off of your time. Registration begins at 9 a.m. in the parking lot next to the Decorah pool. LCDM is a student organization that raises money for the Children's Miracle Network Hospital in Iowa City. Registration is $10; registration forms are available online.
Chamber Orchestra concert Nov. 21
The Chamber Orchestra will perform in concert at 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, in the CFL Main Hall. The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission. Chamber Orchestra will perform Mozart's "Overture to Idomeneo," and Haydn's "Symphony No. 101 in D major." The orchestra will also perform Bach's "Concerto for Violin in A minor, BWV 1041," featuring Igor Kalnin, Luther visiting assistant professor of music, on violin.

Job openings
Administrative assistant: The Financial Aid office is currently accepting applications for a full-time (1.0 FTE) administrative assistant. This position will be the initial office contact for prospective and current students and their families in person, by phone and email. This person will be responsible for processing and tracking documents and preparing completed files for review, reviewing monthly office budget expenditures, coordinating the purchase of supplies and assisting the Human Resources and Payroll departments with clerical duties as needed.
Food and farm fellow: The Center for Sustainable Communities is currently accepting applications for the position of food and farm fellow. This is a 10-month, full-time, 40 hour/week position starting Feb. 1, 2016, and ending Nov. 30, 2016. The food and farm fellow will be responsible for day-to-day operations at the college farm, including student supervision, management of the community garden and carrying out plans for the 2016 season. Additional responsibilities will include marketing and communication, coordinating volunteer opportunities and tours, managing logistics for the Cafeteria to Community Program, implementing composting initiatives and coordinating food education classes.
Outdoor/environmental education fellow: The Center for Sustainable Communities is currently accepting applications for the position of outdoor/environmental education fellow. This is a nine month, full-time, 40 hour/week position starting Feb. 1, 2016 and ending Oct. 30, 2106. The outdoor/environmental education fellow will be responsible for planning, teaching and supervising environmentally focused programs and trips for Luther students and regional youth (pre-K through grade 12), including summer camp programming, pre-college courses and incoming first-year student trips. Additional duties will include assisting with development and training for Luther student trip leaders, coordinating weekend trip programs, and planning and coordinating a fall break trip for Luther students. Responsibilities also include marketing and communication, website management and program planning for the 2017 academic year.

Robert Christman has been awarded a six-month Humboldt Foundation "Grant for Experienced Researchers" to continue his work on the history of the early Reformation in Germany and the Low Countries. Funded by the German government, the Humboldt Foundation confers a limited number of such grants on promising young scholars and researchers from all disciplines and from around the globe in an effort to encourage their interaction with the German academic community.
Marie Drews' article, "'Off Balance': Talking About Girls' Health in the Era of the 'Obesity Epidemic,'" is included in the collection "Difficult Dialogues about 21st Century Girls," recently released by SUNY Press.
Todd Green gave a lecture titled "What Is Islamophobia, and Why Should We Care?" at Centre College in Danville, Kentucky, on Nov. 10.
Spencer Martin and Xiao Hu gave a guest recital and taught master classes at the Interlochen Arts Academy in Interlochen, Michigan, on Oct. 28.
Spencer Martin taught a series of three pre-college viola master classes at the MacPhail Center for Music in Minneapolis on Nov. 6 and 7.
Jim Martin-Schramm presented "Climate Change is an Ethical Issue" to the Root River Conference of pastors in the Southeastern Minnesota Synod (ELCA) on Nov. 10.
Kate Narveson participated in two panels at the Sixteenth Century Studies Conference in Vancouver, B.C. She presented a paper on Lady Anne Twysden's manuscript devotions, and was an invited panelist, along with historians from UC Berkeley, Cambridge and the University of Michigan, leading a discussion on faith, doubt and atheism in the 16th century.
Gregory Peterson gave an organ recital at the Parish Church of St. Helena in Beaufort, South Carolina, on Nov. 6. He also led a workshop with the church's handbell choir.
Britt Rhodes and Alma Gast '10, presented "Cultivating Compassion: The Importance of Sabbath-Keeping" at the North American Association of Christians in Social Work Conference Nov. 12-15 in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Robert Shedinger gave the presentation "Islam as Religion: The Effects of Secularism on Living a Muslim Life" at the Islamic Organization of North America's annual convention, held Nov. 7-8 in Detroit, Michigan.
Elizabeth Steding presented the paper "Teaching East German Literature on Both Sides of the Berlin Wall" at the History of Education Society Conference on Nov. 6 in St. Louis, Missouri.
Brooke Joyce's songs, "Dal Canzoniere di Umberto Saba," were performed on two concerts Oct. 24-25, at the Opus Concert Cafe in Cedar Rapids and the Des Moines Social Club, as part of a concert series sponsored by the Iowa Composers Forum.
