LASO food drive Nov. 17-24

Luther Athletes Serving Others is sponsoring a Thanksgiving food drive through Nov. 24. Food donations can be dropped off in the boxes labeled "LASO Food Drive" in the north and south foyers of the Regents Center. The finale of the food drive will be at the men's and women's basketball games on Tuesday, Nov. 24. Faculty and staff are invited to come out and give to a good cause while cheering on the Norse.

Habitat For Humanity gingerbread house fundraiser

Luther College Habitat for Humanity is selling homemade gingerbread house kits for $10 each to raise money to help reduce the cost of their alternative spring break trip. Each kit will contain pre-baked gingerbread, icing, and assorted candy to use for decoration. What better way to celebrate the holidays than making a gingerbread house with friends and family? Course evaluations for fall 2015 now available on KATIE

Course evaluations have been loaded into KATIE sites for all fall 2015 courses. To administer course evaluations, instructors must make sure the course itself and corresponding evaluation are made visible to students. Note: if using a KATIE metacourse, course evaluations will be loaded into the original standalone courses and cannot be moved. Sustainability news: Local electricity generation

Luther and the City of Decorah are leading the way in local electricity generation. On Nov. 18, 30 organizations from northeast Iowa met at Luther to discuss solar photovoltaic power purchase agreements for non-taxable entities. Using Luther's solar installations as examples, local pioneers in solar energy from Luther and the community delivered a workshop on the financial, legal and technical details essential to establishing local energy production. Participants left with tools to calculate and promote renewable energy investment in their communities.

'Christmas at Luther' performances Dec. 3-6

In a musical celebration of joy, community and holiday traditions, Luther will present the 2015 production of "Christmas at Luther" Dec. 3-6 in the CFL Main Hall. The 2015 production, titled "Savior of the Nations, Come," is an homage to Christmas music from around the world, including the Spanish carol "Riu, Riu, Chiu," the Ukranian carol "Carol of the Bells" and the Haitian carol "Noel Asyisyen."

Administrative assistant: The Financial Aid office is currently accepting applications for a full-time (1.0 FTE) administrative assistant. This position will be the initial office contact for prospective and current students and their families in person, by phone and email. This person will be responsible for processing and tracking documents and preparing completed files for review, reviewing monthly office budget expenditures, coordinating the purchase of supplies and assisting the Human Resources and Payroll departments with clerical duties as needed.

Food and farm fellow: The Center for Sustainable Communities is currently accepting applications for the position of food and farm fellow. This is a 10-month, full-time, 40-hour/week position starting Feb. 1, 2016, and ending Nov. 30, 2016. The food and farm fellow will be responsible for day-to-day operations at the college farm, including student supervision, management of the community garden and carrying out plans for the 2016 season. Additional responsibilities will include marketing and communication, coordinating volunteer opportunities and tours, managing logistics for the Cafeteria to Community Program, implementing composting initiatives and coordinating food education classes.

Outdoor/environmental education fellow: The Center for Sustainable Communities is currently accepting applications for the position of outdoor/environmental education fellow. This is a nine-month, full-time, 40-hour/week position starting Feb. 1, 2016 and ending Oct. 30, 2106. The outdoor/environmental education fellow will be responsible for planning, teaching and supervising environmentally focused programs and trips for Luther students and regional youth (pre-K through grade 12), including summer camp programming, pre-college courses and incoming first-year student trips. Additional duties will include assisting with development and training for Luther student trip leaders, coordinating weekend trip programs, and planning and coordinating a fall break trip for Luther students. Responsibilities also include marketing and communication, website management and program planning for the 2017 academic year.

Melanie Batoff presented a paper titled "From Exegesis to Epic to Liturgical Drama: The German Visitatio sepulchri Reconsidered" on Nov. 12 at the American Musicological Society National Conference in Louisville, Kentucky.

Andy Hageman presented his paper "Red Mars, Red Plenty: A Literary Dialectic of Scientific Community Life" on Nov. 13 at the annual conference of the Society for Literature, Science and the Arts at Rice University.

Norma Hervey served as the moderator for two panels—"Race, Culture and Values" and "Immigration, Value Pluralism, and European Political Identity"—at the Cultural Diversity and Value Pluralism in European and Global Politics conference hosted by Charles University and the Anglo-American University in Prague, Czech Republic.

Brooke Joyce's "Flash!," for trumpet and electronics, was performed twice in November by Keith Benjamin, trumpet professor at the Conservatory of Music and Dance at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

Kirk Larsen organized a symposium on Teaching Entomology at Small Liberal Arts Colleges at the national meetings of the Entomological Society of America in Minneapolis Nov 15-18. Additionally, his summer research students Clare Brandt '16, Isaac Jensen '17, Emma Stivers '17, and HHMI trio member Jacob Wittman '12, presented posters on ground beetles, native bees, and butterflies of remnant and planted tallgrass prairies in northeast Iowa that can be seen outside SHL 132. Clare's poster won second place in the undergraduate poster competition. Additionally, Amy Morey '06, was presented the John Henry Comstock award for the top graduate student in the North Central Branch of the ESA.

Weston Noble was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Iowa High School Music Association for his outstanding contribution to music education. Noble was presented with the award at the 2015 All-State Music Festival Concert on Nov. 21 at Iowa State University. The Lifetime Achievement Award was also awarded on behalf of the Iowa Music Educators Association, the Iowa Choral Directors Association, the Iowa Bandmasters Association and the Iowa String Teachers Association.

Laura Peterson co-authored the study "Tightly linked zonal and meridional sea surface temperature gradients over the past five million years," published in Nature Geoscience.

Dean Vesperman presented twice at the annual meeting of the College and University Faculty Assembly of the National Council for the Social Studies Nov. 11-13 in New Orleans, Louisiana. He presented on the evolution of pre-service teachers conceptions of democracy, was a discussant for two sessions and chaired a third. He also represented CUFA in the NCSS House of Delegates, addressing issues of elementary social studies, the lack of attention to Native American history and support for the #BlackLivesMatter movement.
