Vice president for development search
President Carlson has appointed the following faculty and staff to the search advisory committee for the search for the vice president for development: Associate Dean and Professor of Physics Jeff Wilkerson, who will serve as secretary; Eric Runestad, vice president of finance and administration; Richard Bernatz, professor of mathematics; Joan deAlbuquerque, associate professor of music and director of bands; Rebecca Sullivan, associate professor in library and information studies and Paideia director; Renae Hartl, athletic director and head softball coach; and Brenda Ranum, director of the Career Center. Liz Vanden Burgt, managing partner of Schall Executive Search of Minneapolis, will assist with the search.
COLLEGE OPERATIONS
Christmas at Luther parking restrictions
In order to accommodate the large number of visitors anticipated for Christmas at Luther, the following parking restrictions go into effect at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 2. These restrictions remain in effect until 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 6, at which time the campus returns to the usual lot designations.
The general parking areas of the Library, Jenson-Noble, and City Pool lots will be reserved for visitors. Students should move their vehicles from these lots to either the Regents Center or Farwell lots. Faculty and staff may park in these areas provided they move by 5:30 p.m. unless attending the performance.
Exceptions: Vehicles displaying a Commuter sticker may park in the Commuter-only row on the eastern side of the Library lot provided they vacate the spaces before 4 p.m. This exception applies only to the Commuter row and not the rest of the previously mentioned areas.
The Faculty/Staff parking area by Valders will be reserved for those with an accessible parking permit. Starting at 5 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 4, the lots on the east and west side of the CFL will also be reserved for those with an accessible parking permit.
Alternative parking includes the roadway from Sampson Hoffland to the main gate and the Regents Center and Farwell lots. Your cooperation with these changes is appreciated. Vehicles found to be in violation of these special event restrictions are subject to fines.
New homepage launched
The Luther web content team, working with web designer Nathan Breitenbach-Dirks '04, launched a new Luther homepage on Nov. 25. The new look is designed to interest and inform prospective students and those who advise them. The project included simplifying the top navigation, the blue bar at the top of every page, so that it is focused almost exclusively on prospective student tasks. Other audiences such as alumni, friends, donors, parents, current students, faculty and staff can easily find their web content by accessing the "Info for" dropdown or the site search.
Staff Christmas party
The December staff meeting will be a Christmas party held at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 9, in Peace Dining Room. This year's theme is "A Very Prairie Christmas." Staff are invited to bring a monetary donation for the First Lutheran Church Food Pantry, as cash gifts allow the Pantry to purchase in bulk.
Farwell Distinguished Lecturer announced
The Campus Programming office is excited to announce that Bryan Stevenson will be the 2015-16 Farwell Distinguished Lecturer. He will speak on "Mercy, Humanity, and Making a Difference" at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 1, in the CFL Main Hall. Stevenson is the founder of the Equal Justice Initiative, author of "Just Mercy," and one of Time magazine's "Most Influential People in 2015." Snow removal request from Facilities Services
With winter weather upon us, we ask that whenever possible overnight parking on campus streets be avoided during snow events. This will help ensure that the snow removal crew can do a better job of clearing the streets in a timelier manner.
Flu clinic Dec. 1
Iowa is one of three states in the nation with the highest estimated influenza activity right now. This is a reminder that the flu virus is circulating and the flu vaccine is the best tool we have to prevent it. Health Service will hold another flu clinic from 12:30-2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 1, in the Union. Vaccine is also available during office hours at Health Service.
Mumps outbreak at the University of Iowa
The University of Iowa is experiencing a large number of mumps cases on their campus. Health officials are asking that with the holidays fast approaching, students need to be aware of this risk as they may encounter individuals from other campuses. Students who have not received the required two doses of MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) should do so at their earliest convenience, either at Health Service or at home over break.
Finals prep week
A campus programming reminder to all that Tuesday-Sunday, Dec. 8-13, is considered finals prep week and is intended to provide additional space for students to prepare for tests, papers and finals. These six days are set aside for academic preparation for finals, and Luther does not schedule public events during this time—including student led events. Exceptions include only athletic events, social gatherings, Christmas in the Union, and Kwanzaa.

United Way prize drawing winners
A heartfelt thank-you to all who are supporting the United Way this season. A prize drawing among donors who have already contributed was held Nov. 23. Lisa Tangen won a Luther sweatshirt donated by the Book Shop. Chelle Meyer won an hour massage donated by the Health Service. Kathryn Reed and Ramona Nelson won tickets to Wu Man and the Shanghai Quartet, and Imani Winds respectively, donated by the Center Stage Series. And Norma Hervey, Carol Gilbertson and Mark Muggli, Ruth and Will Bunge, Lori Ostlie, and Doug Nelson all won two tickets to Peace Brunch, donated by Dining Services.
Habitat For Humanity gingerbread house fundraiser
Luther College Habitat for Humanity is selling homemade gingerbread house kits for $10 each to raise money to help reduce the cost of their alternative spring break trip. Each kit will contain pre-baked gingerbread, icing, and assorted candy to use for decoration. What better way to celebrate the holidays than making a gingerbread house with friends and family? Course evaluations for fall 2015 now available on KATIE
Course evaluations have been loaded into KATIE sites for all fall 2015 courses. To administer course evaluations, instructors must make sure the course itself and corresponding evaluation are made visible to students. Note: if using a KATIE metacourse, course evaluations will be loaded into the original standalone courses and cannot be moved. Sustainability news: Local electricity generation
Luther and the City of Decorah are leading the way in local electricity generation. On Nov. 18, 30 organizations from northeast Iowa met at Luther to discuss solar photovoltaic power purchase agreements for non-taxable entities. Using Luther's solar installations as examples, local pioneers in solar energy from Luther and the community delivered a workshop on the financial, legal and technical details essential to establishing local energy production. Participants left with tools to calculate and promote renewable energy investment in their communities.

'Christmas at Luther' performances Dec. 3-6
In a musical celebration of joy, community and holiday traditions, Luther will present the 2015 production of "Christmas at Luther" Dec. 3-6 in the CFL Main Hall. The 2015 production, titled "Savior of the Nations, Come," is an homage to Christmas music from around the world, including the Spanish carol "Riu, Riu, Chiu," the Ukranian carol "Carol of the Bells" and the Haitian carol "Noel Asyisyen."

The Blair household (Mike, Sue, Kate and Ben) sends our gratitude for expressions of kindness, prayers and support in the wake of the garage fire at our home on Saturday, Nov. 28. The fire totaled our garage, our car and our neighbor's car. Fortunately, there were no injuries from the fire and no damage to any homes. We are also grateful for the unidentified passer-by who called 911 and for the rapid and thorough response of local police and fire departments. Our thanks to neighbors and friends in the Decorah and Luther communities who have been so helpful.

Job openings
Campus pastor: The Pastoral Call Committee is seeking nominations and applications for a college pastor to serve with the pastoral team in Luther's Office for College Ministries. The college pastor will serve the Luther College Student Congregation (an ELCA student congregation) and serve as a spiritual leader for the campus community. The college pastor will preside and preach regularly, lead Bible studies, provide pastoral care and counseling, mentor student leaders and advise student groups that address religious questions and issues. The college pastor will also help plan and lead ceremonies and special events on campus, and he or she will represent the college at church-related activities off campus.
Administrative assistant: College Ministries has an opening for a .83 FTE administrative assistant. The College Ministries administrative assistant coordinates the administrative and clerical work of the office, as well as external communication with congregations, pastors and various church offices. The administrative assistant plays a key role in welcoming students and assessing requests for mentoring and pastoral care. Qualified candidates will have a minimum of four year's office experience as well as excellent organizational, problem solving and communication skills. A college degree, experience working in higher education, or church office experience is preferred.
Coordinator of diversity recruitment: The Admissions Office seeks a full-time coordinator of diversity recruitment to work with area programs serving underrepresented students, assist in the recruitment of students to Luther College and assist with retention efforts for students of color. Must be willing to travel extensively and make public presentations. Candidates must have a valid driver's license and a positive driving record that will enable them to be insured through the college. B.A. or B.S. required with academic preparation in any discipline, but must have above average written and verbal communication skills. Recent degree from Luther solicited but not required. One year of relevant post-graduate experience recommended. Experience in sales, marketing, communication and education is highly desirable. Spanish speakers are strongly encouraged to apply.

Todd Green published an article in the Fall 2015 issue of the ELCA journal Connect titled, "Can Youth Ministry Make a Difference in the Fight against Islamophobia?" The issue was devoted to how churches and youth ministry programs can engage in conversations about race, power and privilege.
Keith Lesmeister has new stories published in the Gettysburg Review and December Magazine.
Beth Lynch co-authored three recent papers resulting from collaborative research funded by the National Science Foundation: "Presence of lakes and wetlands decreases resilience of jack pine ecosystems to late-Holocene climatic changes" in Canadian Journal of Forest Research; "Geophysical features influence the climate change sensitivity of northern Wisconsin pine and oak forests" in Ecological Applications; and "Taking the long view: Integrating recorded, archeological, paleoecological, and evolutionary data into ecological restoration" in International Journal of Plant Sciences.
Jim Martin-Schramm presented "Teaching Climate Change and Climate Justice in Religion/Religious Studies Classrooms" with Daniel T. Spencer, University of Montana, at a joint session of the Religion and Ecology Group and the Transformative Scholarship and Pedagogy Group at the Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Religion in Atlanta on Nov. 23.
Laura Peterson co-authored the study "Tightly linked zonal and meridional sea surface temperature gradients over the past five million years," published in "Nature Geoscience."
Amy Weldon has three essays forthcoming in print and online: "A Miniature Handbook for New Women Activists" in Fracture: Essays, Poems, and Stories on Fracking from Ice Cube Press; "Mockingbirds, Watchmen, and Novelists: On Harper Lee and Novel-Writing" reprinted in an eBook collection of critical essays titled "Harper Lee," part of the ongoing series Modern Critical Voices, edited by Harold Bloom; and "Attentional Commons and the Common Good: Technology and Lutheran Higher Education" in Intersections.
Sarah E. Wilder and Thomas C. Johnson recently attended the National Communication Association Conference held in Las Vegas. Sarah presented her co-authored manuscript "Was it All Smoke and Mirrors? Applying the Relational Turbulence Model to Adult Children's Experience of Late-Life Parental Divorce" and the project "How I Met Your Mother + Research Turning-Point Analysis" in a "Great Ideas For Teaching" session. Thomas presented a recently published pedagogical blueprint on documentary film and professional football on a panel, "Teaching Media Quarterly: Cultivating Dynamic Pedagogy through Open Access Lesson Plan Publishing."
