The Just Action group would like to thank all of the individuals, departments and organizations who endorsed "Friendship Not Fear: Standing in Solidarity with Muslims at Luther College." The statement has received national attention and has inspired other institutions to follow suit. For anyone who still wants to endorse the statement, please visit the Just Action website.

Sustainability news: Classroom lights

The light fixtures in Luther's classrooms use extremely efficient lightbulbs and their effectiveness is increased when people only use the amount of light they need. Every classroom has multi-level switching so that people do not have to use all of the lightbulbs all the time. If a class only used the low-level light setting, over the course of a semester Luther would save 25 kilowatt hours of electricity compared to using high-level light settings.

EDITORIAL COMMENT

And finally...

Kwanzaa is a week-long celebration that begins Dec. 26 and ends Jan. 1. The celebration honors African heritage in African-American culture. Kwanzaa celebrates the seven principles of Kwanzaa, or Nguzo Saba:

  • Umoja (Unity): To strive for and to maintain unity in the family, community, nation and race.
  • Kujichagulia (Self-Determination): To define ourselves, name ourselves, create for ourselves and speak for ourselves.
  • Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility): To build and maintain our community together and make our brothers' and sisters' problems our problems, and to solve them together.
  • Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics): To build and maintain our own stores, shops and other businesses and to profit from them together.
  • Nia (Purpose): To make our collective vocation the building and developing of our community in order to restore our people to their traditional greatness.
  • Kuumba (Creativity): To do always as much as we can, in the way we can, in order to leave our community more beautiful and beneficial than we inherited it.
  • Imani (Faith): To believe with all our hearts in our people, our parents, our teachers, our leaders and the righteousness and victory of our struggle.
  • So powerful is the light of unity that it can illuminate the whole earth.
