Open house fitness sessions

Interested in improving your health and fitness, but unsure where to start or looking for some help? Wellness is hosting an open house fitness session for faculty, staff and students 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22. Wellness staff will be available to answer questions, demonstrate exercises and equipment in Legends, and give professional advice to get you started. Free Friday morning open gym

Parents and their children (0-5 years old) are invited to come burn off energy Fridays in February from 10:30-11:45 a.m. at an open gym inside Luther's North Gym and indoor track. There is no admission fee, and balls, scooters, etc. are provided. Rachel Peterson '04 describes how peace studies in Norway seemed like a natural next step for her after studying anthropology and sociology at Luther.

On the Faculty Stories page, Susan Schmidt, visiting assistant;professor of social work, tells about interviewing more than 200 unaccompanied children from Central America and Mexico detained in federal shelters and Border Patrol facilities for a report to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

'The Racialization of Trust: Who Have We Been Taught Not to Trust?'

Who have we been taught to trust and not to trust? Michelle Boike, assistant director of the Diversity Center, and Wintlett Taylor-Browne, interim director of the Diversity Center, explore this question in their Paideia Texts and Issues lecture titled "The Racialization of Trust: Who Have We Been Taught Not to Trust?" at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 14, in the CFL Recital Hall.

'A Reflection on Art, Representation, and Black Militancy'

As part of Luther College's observance of Black History Month, artist Muha Bazila will deliver a lecture titled "A Reflection on Art, Representation, and Black Militancy" at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 15, in Olin 102. Bazila explores the representation of black people in Brazilian art and also discusses his own work in the context of black militancy in Brazil.

Faculty Artist Series: Jon Ailabouni, trumpet

Featuring a variety of works written by female jazz composers, Jon Ailabouni will perform a trumpet recital at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 15, in the NRH. His performance will feature works by Lil Armstrong, Bernice Petkere, Mary Lou Williams, Carla Bley and others. The recital is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Anthropology Day

National Anthropology Day is a day for anthropologists to celebrate and participate in their discipline with the public around them. To celebrate the field of anthropology at Luther, enjoy a series events hosted by the department Thursday, Feb. 16: stop by the anthropology table 11 a.m.-2 p.m. in the Union to win some anthropology swag; visit the anthropology lab on the third floor of Koren to check out cool artifacts, enjoy some treats and learn about the ways to get involved; and browse through anthropology books on special display in the library.

Conversation with Charles Burnett

Acclaimed film director Charles Burnett will join Novian Whitsitt for a conversation on African Americans in cinema at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, in the CFL Main Hall. The event, sponsored by Luther's Africana Studies Department, Paideia Endowment, Diversity Council, Sustainability, SAC: Cinema, Just Action and Black Student Union, is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Faculty Artist Series: Jonathan Struve, voice

Jonathon Struve will perform a voice recital at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, in the NRH. The recital will begin with Bach's Cantata BWV 82, "Ich habe genug," featuring performances by Luther faculty. The second half of his program will feature art songs by George Butterworth, Maurice Ravel and Francesco Paolo Tosti. The recital is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Center Stage Series: Sō Percussion

The percussion ensemble Sō Percussion, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 18, in the CFL Main Hall. The ensemble plays a wide variety of music from multi-genre original productions to sensational interpretations of modern classics. Tickets, on sale in the Ticket Office, are $25 for adults, $23 for seniors age 65 and over and $15 for youth ages 4-18, and may be purchased online or via the Luther Ticket Office, 387-1357 or <tickets>.

Faculty Artist Series: Miko Kominami, piano

Performing two sets of music spanning a century, Miko Kominami will perform a piano recital at 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 19, in the NRH. Her program features Brahms' Klavierstucke, Op. 118 and "Peccadilloes" by American composer Paul Schoenfield. The program is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Luther Norse Awards Feb. 19

The Student Athlete Advisory committee invites the Luther community to attend the Norse Awards at 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 19, in the Regents Center Gymnasium. Film screening: 'Land of the Lemurs: Madagascar'

As part of her visit to Luther, Patricia Wright, primatologist and distinguished service professor of anthropology at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, will show the IMAX film, "Land of the Lemurs: Madagascar," at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 19, in Olin 102. The film screening is open to the public with no charge for admission. This event will precede her Feb. 21 lecture, "Girl Power: Ladies Lead in the Lemurs of Madagascar."

Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar Program lecture

As part of the Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar Program, Luther will host Patricia Wright, primatologist and distinguished service professor of anthropology at the State University of New York at Stony Brook Feb. 20-21. Wright's lecture, "Girl Power: Ladies Lead in the Lemurs of Madagascar," will focus on matriarchal social organization among lemurs in Madagascar. The lecture will take place at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 21, in Valders 206 and will be preceded by a reception at 5 p.m. in the Valders Concourse. Both events are open to the public with no charge for admission.

Faculty Artist Series: Rachel Brandwein and Carol Hester

Rachel Brandwein and Carol Hester will perform a faculty flute and harp recital at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 21, in the NRH. Spencer Martin, viola, will perform alongside Brandwein and Hester on Debussy's Sonata for Flute, Viola, and Harp. Dorian Band Festival Grand Concert Feb. 27

Featuring three festival bands and 625 high school musicians from 105 high schools, Luther's annual Dorian Band Festival Grand Concert will be held at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 27 in the CFL Main Hall. This event is open to the public with no charge for admission. The concert's festival bands include a Symphonic Band - an auditioned group of about 75 students, and the Sperati and Noble Bands - both consisting of 250 high schoolers.

Chris Norton: The Power to Stand

SAC Leadership presents Luther alumnus Chris Norton! Chris Norton is a keynote speaker and author who calls upon audiences to focus on response instead of situation, and to be defined by attitude rather than circumstance. Chris will speak at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28 in Main Hall of the CFL, and a question and answer session will follow his talk. Tickets available for $5 at the at Ticket Office.

Center Stage Series: The Nile Project

The Nile Project, a cross-cultural collaboration that brings artists from 11 Nile countries together for a musical celebration of Nile identity, will perform at Luther at 7:30 p.m.Saturday, March 4, in the CFL Main Hall. Part environmental awareness initiative, part musical collaboration, the 35-member collective comes together from 11 different East African countries to create a unified sound while maintaining each country's unique culture and musical tradition. Tickets for the Center Stage Series performance of The Nile Project on sale in Luther's Ticket Office, may be purchased online at www.tickets.luther.edu or via the Luther Ticket Office.

Safety and security officer: Full time security officer to provide for the safety and security of people and property on the Luther campus. Officers perform multiple tasks, including random patrol of building and grounds on foot and by vehicle to deter and detect criminal activity and other conduct issues with an emphasis on prevention. The primary hours for this position will be be 3:30-11:30 p.m. or 3:30 p.m.-1:30 a.m. or a combination of both. Scheduled hours will include weekends and holidays. The position can be physically demanding. A high school diploma or GED is required, some college is preferred. Must have or obtain CPR and AED training. Preferred qualifications include past security, law enforcement or customer service experience and training. Prior experience in a college setting is desired. Todd Green delivered the lecture, "Islamophobia and Interfaith Engagement" at the Institute of Islamic, Christian, and Jewish Studies in Baltimore, Maryland, Feb. 7.

The art of sophomores Ryan Koning and Joseph Cowan has been selected to be featured in Lanesboro Arts' annual Emerging Artist Exhibition. The show opens with an artist reception at 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, and the exhibition runs through March 19. Open to the public with no charge for admission, the exhibition gallery is located at 103 Parkway Ave N. in Lanesboro, Minnesota, with gallery hours Tuesday through Saturday 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

Gregory Peterson gave a guest organ recital at Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Sun City West, Arizona, Jan. 29. The second half of the program included unique duets for four hands and four feet. Collaborating in the performance was Professor Emeritus of Music William Kuhlman.

Jill Wilson presented at the Suncoast Music Education Research Symposium hosted by the Center for Music Education Research at the University of South Florida. The project, a collaboration with Natalie Royston of Iowa State University, was titled "Beliefs of undergraduate music teacher education students on professional teacher dispositions."
