Severe weather week

The Winneshiek County Emergency Management, Decorah Police Department and the Winneshiek County Sheriff's Office reminds the community that March 27-31 is the National Weather Service's Severe Weather Week. Winneshiek County will participate in the statewide tornado drill Wednesday, March 29. The schedule is as follows:

10 a.m.: Test tornado watch issued from the National Weather Service
10:15 a.m.: Test tornado warning from the National Weather Service - La Crosse, Wisconsin
10:30 a.m.: End of test

The NWS encourages every school, resident and business to take part in the drill by seeking safe and secure shelter as if it were a real weather emergency. Call the non-emergency lines of the Winneshiek County Emergency Management Office at 387-4095, the Decorah Police Department at 382-3667 or the Winneshiek County Sheriff's Office at 382-4268 with questions or comments. If there is severe weather March 29, the test could be postponed until the following day.

Employee wellness classes

There is still space in on-campus Yoga, Tai Chi and Pilates classes starting March 27. Details for each are available on the recreational services website. Wellness Series: Stretching at Work

Stop by from 9:30 to 9:55 a.m., noon to 12:25 p.m., or 5:15 to 5:40 p.m. Monday, March 27, in Borlaug and learn how to incorporate stretching into the work day to reduce pain and fatigue. Wellness staff will also demonstrate resistance band exercises for the workplace and give away resistance bands. Contact Wellness, <wellness> with any questions.

Student Workshop: Making The Most Of Your Advising Appointment

Encourage students to attend a workshop on March 30 to help prepare for productive advising conversations. Presentations offered either 9:45-10:15 a.m. or 10:20-10:50 a.m. in Valders 362. TRIO student persistence and graduation rates

The TRIO Achievement Program positions and empowers first-generation and income-eligible students to thrive at Luther College through holistic, individualized support and comprehensive programming that promotes their academic success, personal development and sense of community. The program has a student persistence rate of 95 percent (170 of 179 Luther students participating in TRIO last year either graduated or are progressing toward graduation.) Cohort graduation rates consistently exceed 80 percent.

TIAA announcement from Human Resources

TIAA recently sent a notice to all participants in regards to discontinuing future contributions in the CREF Money Market Account Class R2 (QCMMPX) and the upcoming addition of the CREF Money Market Account (QDMMPX). This notice was sent regardless of investments in QCMMPX. Employees have the opportunity to consider adjusting how they allocate current investments and future contributions, and modifying their portfolio mix by transferring money between accounts. While no action is required, these changes present an opportunity to take a fresh look at investments to stay on track with long-term retirement goals. TIAA representatives are on hand to assist employees with the process, call TIAA, (800)-842-2252, for expert guidance.

Pedal For a Cure

Join Wellness, Dance Marathon and the Library March 27-31 for the first Bike-a-thon in the Library with the Fit Desks. We are teaming up to help get students Fit For the Kids! Fit Desks are made so people can study while getting exercise. Employees are encouraged to pledge money per minute that students ride the Fit Desks. On the Faculty Stories page, Laurie Zaring, associate professor of linguistics and French, describes how her students' discoveries always lead her to new ones too. "Learning doesn't get any cooler than that! And because language is such an integral part of our lives, a linguistic perspective can benefit students in any field," said Zaring.

Muggli to present at LCWC meeting March 21

Mark Z. Jazz Orchestra Homecoming concert

The Luther College Jazz Orchestra, under the direction of Juan Tony Guzmán, will perform their homecoming concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 28, in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall. The concert is the culmination of Jazz Orchestra's 2017 Colorado and Midwest Tour. The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission, and will be streamed live at stream.luther.edu/music.

Legends open house fitness session

Those interested in improving health and fitness, but are unsure where to start or looking for some help should attend the March Legends open house session from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, March 29, in Legends. Luther College to host trumpeter Adam Gordon March 29

The Music Department presents guest recitalist Adam Gordon, trumpet, in concert at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 29, in the CFL Recital Hall. The recital, open to the public with no charge for admission, features works by Bach, Henry Purcell, Domenico Gabrieli, Heinrich Biber and Jac Rittler.

'Before the Foundations'

"Before the Foundations," an exhibit by Skip McKinstry, will be on display March 30-May 21, in the CFL Second Floor Gallery. The exhibit is open to the public with no charge for admission. The exhibit focuses on redemption, the toll of creation, the loss of innocence, freedom of choice and God's authority and the struggle to function in a world divided from its source of life.'

'Welcoming the Stranger: Refugees at the Core of the Lutheran World Federation'

As part of Luther's Liberating Grace conference, Ralston Deffenbaugh, assistant general secretary for International Affairs and Human Rights with the Lutheran World Federation, will deliver the address, "Welcoming the Stranger: Refugees at the Core of the Lutheran World Federation," at 8:45 a.m. Saturday, April 1, in the CFL Main Hall. Deffenbaugh will also lead a conference seminar, "The Global Challenge of Refugee Protection in an Age of Fear," at 10:30 a.m. The Liberating Grace conference is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Music Department Presents J.S. Bach's B-minor Mass

The Music Department presents J.S. Bach's B-minor Mass at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 1, in the Main Hall of the CFL. In addition to the performance in Decorah, a performance of the same program will take place at Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, April 2. The performances feature Luther's Nordic Choir and Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Daniel Baldwin, professor of music and director of orchestra activities at Luther. Tickets for the Decorah performance can be purchased online or at the Ticket Office. Tickets for the Orchestra Hall performance can be purchased online.

Michael Osterholm to deliver Dr. David J. Roslien Distinguished Lecture

Luther College will host Michael Osterholm '75, University of Minnesota Regents Professor and McKnight Endowed Presidential chair in Public Health, for the first Dr. David J. Roslien Distinguished Lecture in Science and Leadership at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 4, in the CFL Main Hall. Osterholm will sign books before his lecture from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in the Center for Faith and Life lobby. Both events are open to the public with no charge for admission.

'Immigration and Unaccompanied Minors'

Speaking on their work with unaccompanied minors entering the United States from Mexico and Central America, Luther visiting assistant professor of social work, Susan Schmidt and immigration lawyer Yer L. Vang will host a panel titled "Immigration and Unaccompanied Minors" at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 5, in Olin 102. The event is part of the Center for Ethics and Public Engagement's Spring Series of panels titled "Tough Talk, Calm Voices."

Women, Faith, and Finance Seminar

On Friday, April 7, Luther is hosting the 13th annual Women, Faith and Finance seminar at the Hotel Winneshiek. Women of all ages are invited to come and learn more about financial management, retirement and estate planning, and charitable giving. Cost is $30-bring a friend and each save $5. Visual Media fellow: One year, full-time Visual Media fellow. Responsibilities include mentoring work-study students, producing short marketing videos, occasional photography coverage, manage/monitor an inventory of photo and video equipment and help in the conception and execution of video projects. Bachelor's degree preferred, with experience in visual media field a must. Preference goes to candidates with experience working with digital SLRs, Photoshop, Final Cut Pro X and basic sound equipment. Experience working with and managing student workers is preferred; familiarity with on-location lighting is a plus.

Financial Aid administrative assistant: Full-time administrative assistant in the financial aid office will be responsible for the coordination, certification and reconciliation of all private student loans. This person will be responsible for the creation and mailing of award letters, reconciliation of funds and processing state program files. A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Associate's degree with coursework in Microsoft Office Suite, business practices, keyboarding and office procedures preferred. General knowledge of financial aid process is helpful.

Media coordinator: The Media Relations and Visual Media departments seek a detail-oriented and organized full-time 10-month media coordinator. Responsibilities include supporting both Media Relations and Visual Media through writing press releases, managing social media platforms, distributing mass communication, managing schedules, supporting the creation of visual content and front desk management. Bachelor's degree is preferred, with experience in communications field a must. 

Associate registrar: .92 FTE, prepares and implements processes that support the academic program, including preparation and maintenance of academic records, registration and degree audit; executes academic policies as approved by the faculty; serves as technology liaison between the Registrar's Office and Information Technology Services; fulfills compliance responsibilities; and serves as primary assistant to the Registrar. A bachelor's degree, minimum of three years' experience in student information database management in a higher education setting, and an understanding of a liberal arts college curriculum is required. Priority will be given to applications submitted by March 27.

Full-time custodian: General custodial responsibilities include overall appearance of assigned academic and resident hall building(s) and public areas. Hours will generally be 2-10:30 p.m. Monday-Friday. Must be able to work with little supervision, complete work thoroughly and promptly, and be self-motivated. High school diploma or equivalent preferred, but not required.

Full-time weekend custodian: Responsibilities include assisting in maintaining building appearance, including areas such as lobbies, entrances, classrooms, offices, hallways, break rooms, auditoriums, conference rooms, staircases and restrooms. This position will work weekends as custodial support for events as needed, and will then adjust hours during the week to equal 40 hours. Typical work schedule is 6 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday-Sunday and 1-7 p.m. Wednesday-Friday. Weekday hours are negotiable. Must be able to work with little supervision, complete work thoroughly and promptly, and be self-motivated. High school diploma or equivalent required.

Sally Mallam was invited to conduct an external review for the Disability Services department March 12-14 at Beloit College.

Deanna Casterton was installed as president of the board for the National Association of College Stores Foundation, the only charitable resource for the campus store industry. Casterton will represent the foundation as a voting member of the NACS board of trustees. As an active supporter of the foundation, she has served on several committees and has sat on the board of directors since 2013. NACS provides resources that help support student success, the campus experience and the academic missions of higher education institutions.
