Interim Dean for Institutional Equity and Inclusion: Candidate open forums

The Luther community is invited to attend a conversation with the interim Dean for Institutional Equity and Inclusion candidates on the following dates:
1:30-2:30 p.m. Thursday, June 8, in Mott
1:30-2:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 13, in Mott
Attending both sessions is encouraged, but not required. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and provide feedback for the search advisory committee. Chair massages Monday in Borlaug

​Wellness is hosting a massage therapist in Nansen Monday, June 19, for $1/minute chair massages (cash, check or card at appointment), which can help reduce muscle tension, improve blood flow/circulation, increase energy-improving productivity, decrease anxiety and enhance immune system function. Chair massage is done on a chair designed for massaging the back, neck, shoulders, arms and hands. Massages are done fully clothed. Sign up here; email <wellness> with questions.

Temporary file cleanup for Windows workstations

Starting Wednesday, June 7, ITS will begin clearing temporary directories, browser caches and other unused files on Windows Faculty/Staff workstations upon logoff/shutdown. This will be a continuous process and the first logoff/shutdown attempt from on campus may take up to 15 minutes to complete, so please plan accordingly. After that, the process should go unnoticed. Office of Financial Services closes out end of year

The college's fiscal year ended May 31. The Office for Financial Services reminds all faculty and staff that supplies and materials must have been received by May 31 to be expensed to the fiscal year 2016-17 budget. Additionally, all outstanding travel expense reports, credit card reports, original invoices-no faxed copies, supporting purchase orders/purchase permits or account adjustments should be sent to OFS by Friday, June 9 to be included in the fiscal year 2016-17 budget. Items for deposit that were in Luther's possession by May 31 should be brought to OFS immediately. Call with questions, 387-1015. Thanks for helping OFS close the year in a timely manner.

Seeking friendship families for new international students

The Luther Diversity Center seeks individuals and families in the Decorah community to help incoming international students adjust to life at Luther and in the United States. The goal of the program is to promote international understanding and develop an appreciation of how others live and view the world. Interested individuals and families can sign up on the Diversity Center website.

Hazardous materials pick-up

Environmental Services will be doing a hazardous materials pick-up on campus in the near future. Contact Ivan, 387-1668 or <hackiv01>, by July 7 with requests for any hazardous material pick-up.

Bronze sculptures by Amy Goldman on display through October at Luther College

"Rare Forms," an exhibit created by artist Amy Goldman on display at Luther, features 17 bronze cast sculptures of heirloom plant varieties made using the lost wax casting process. Each individual sculpture is a replica of a plant grown in her own garden. Her artwork is made to celebrate the vast array of diversity found in plants not only in her personal garden, but around the world. The exhibit, on display through October, is located outside the Wigley-Fleming Gallery in the CFA.

Luther to install blue AstroTurf in Carlson Stadium

Carlson Stadium on the Luther campus will get a major upgrade this summer with the installation of a top-of-the-line synthetic turf and pad system by AstroTurf. Legacy Field, as it will be named within Carlson Stadium, will have the distinction of being the only blue turf field among NCAA Division III colleges and universities in the United States.

Luther's Jennaya Robison to present masterclass

Jennaya Robison, Luther assistant professor of music, will present a masterclass for the Tucson Girls Chorus at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 6, in the Choir Room of Jenson-Noble. Robison will work with the Advanced Choir of the Tucson Girls Chorus in a workshop-style format. Open to the public with no charge for admission, the community is welcome to attend the masterclass as audience members.

Street tacos at Pulpit Rock

Luther College Catering will be serving street style tacos starting at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 10, at the Pulpit Rock Mexican Imperial Stout beer release.

Preview Day

Luther College will host a Preview Day on Friday, June 16. Preview Days are designed to provide prospective students with an introduction to Luther's learning environment. Each day includes a campus tour, academic department visits, financial aid and career services sessions, complimentary lunch in the cafeteria, and opportunities to observe athletic practices and music ensemble rehearsals. Soccer instructional camp

The Luther College Soccer Camp offers Iowa and the Midwest top-quality soccer instruction. The camp, happening July 17-20, enables aspiring players to learn the basic techniques and tactics of the game in an atmosphere of positive encouragement and support, while advanced players receive collegiate/pro-level training. Each camper will receive a camp t-shirt. This camp is open to boys and girls ages 8 to 14. More information can be found online.

Norse soccer mini camp

The camp offers tremendous instruction from qualified staff for the boys and girls ages 4-7. The purpose of the camp is to introduce mini-campers to soccer by teaching fundamental skills associated with the game, alongside simple concepts and ideas. Thus, a child's first steps in the game become a perfect foundation to further development. More information on the camp can be found online.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS

"Pillow Talk," an excerpt from a novella by Jerry Johnson, retired director of Public Information, is published in Adelaide Literary Magazine. The story has been printed in the quarterly journal's magazine, published in New York and Lisbon, and appears on its website in both an HTML version and as an online flip book. Johnson is the author of four collections of essays and two novels, available at the Luther Book Shop, Dragonfly Books in Decorah and on Amazon.

Maren Johnson presented a paper at the Society for the Advancement of Scandinavian Study Conference, held May 4-7, on the role of motherhood in Henrik Ibsen's "Hedda Gabler" and "The Master Builder."

Andy Hageman published an essay on two contemporary Icelandic novels in the online journal, "Alluvium."

Luther College has awarded brothers Scott and John Meyer the Young Alumni Award for 2017. S. Meyer, Luther class of 2005, and J. Meyer, Luther class of 2008, are co-founders of the company 9 Clouds in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. In 2011, J. Meyer founded the company Lemonly, a sister company to 9 Clouds, also in Sioux Falls.
