Preparedness tip

June 18-24, 2017, is National Lightning Safety Awareness Week. Stay alert to changing weather conditions at the National Weather Service website and keep up-to-date on current emergent conditions affecting Luther at Emergency.luther.edu.

Admissions report available via KATIE

The monthly admissions report is now available in KATIE. Luther faculty and staff can access the report via KATIE approximately one week after the end of each month. To view the report, search for "enrollment data" in the Search Courses box in the upper-right corner of any KATIE page. If prompted to enroll, accept.

Staffing changes in the President's Office

The President's Office is pleased to announce the appointment of Sally Ming as the new executive assistant to the president. Sally served in a temporary role in the President's Office in fall 2015. She started her new position June 12. Sally can be reached at <mingsa01> or 387-1527. Sally replaces Suzanne Lyndon, who is relocating to Massachusetts this summer. Suzanne's last day at Luther was Friday, June 16.

Mobile website enhancements

External mobile traffic to luther.edu has increased 283 percent the last two years. We also know that 70 percent of college-bound high school students have looked at a college website on a mobile device. Hence, enhancing the mobile experience is always a top priority. Check out these new features on your smart phone: swipeable features, improved feature presentation, green "Take the Next Step" bar for call-to-action buttons and placement of social icons on the page. Center Stage Series subscription packages on sale

Luther College Center Stage Series is celebrating 40 years of timeless and one-of-a-kind experiences at the CFL with nine unforgettable CSS performances, two school matinee performances and the college's continuing commemoration of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. Tickets for CSS events may be purchased as a subscription package through Friday, Aug. 25. Subscriptions can be purchased through Ticket Office or by downloading a subscription form online. CSS patrons with special requirements and those who would like assistance ordering may contact the Ticket Office, 387-1357 or <tickets>.

Sympathy

Jim Eckblad was one of the featured speakers at the 20th Annual Wooden Boat Show and Summer Solstice Festival at the North House Folk School this past weekend in Grand Marais, Minnesota. His topic was "Building a wood-strip paddleboard."

Luther students Sheri Schwert '17, Elijah Kane '18, and Max Eness '20, as well as mentor Eric Baack, presented their research on "Sinkholes, springs, and multi-drug resistant bacteria" at a meeting hosted by the Iowa Environmental Council on "Karst, Livestock, and Water Quality" at Luther College on May 30.

Holly Moore presented a paper titled, "Socrates as Narrator of the Republic" on May 26 at the International Conference on Persons at the University of Calabria, Italy.

As technology continues to get smaller, there is a need to know the wear properties of objects on the nanoscale. Jared Barnes, Luther senior of Fort Worth, Texas, is researching and analyzing the effects of nanoscale wear for his summer research project at the college.

A national assessment shows Luther College has made significant gains in sustainability performance over the past three years. This spring Luther submitted information on the college's efforts to STARS (Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System), a program run by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education. Luther received a STARS silver rating of 62.47, which shows improvement from the 47.51 rating the college earned in 2014.

And finally...

Juneteenth (Celebrated on June 19) is the oldest known celebration commemorating the freedom of slaves after the abolition of slavery in the United States. Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19 that the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas, with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. Note that this was two and a half years after President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation - which had become official January 1, 1863. The Emancipation Proclamation had little impact on the Texans due to the minimal number of Union troops to enforce the new Executive Order. However, with the surrender of General Lee in April of 1865, and the arrival of General Granger's regiment, the forces were finally strong enough to influence and overcome the resistance.
