Upper campus closed to motorized vehicles July 28

The Luther community will be offering a big blue welcome to all RAGBRAI riders passing through Decorah Friday, July 28—College Spirit Day! Much of our welcome will take place along the route on College Drive, but riders will also be encouraged to take the "Luther Loop" through campus. For the safety of all riders involved, upper campus will be closed to motorized traffic from 6 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Walking or biking to work that day is encouraged, though parking and access to campus will continue to be available in the Regents and Farwell lots. Call for RAGBRAI workers and parade walkers

Luther College is welcoming RAGBRAI riders through campus Friday, July 28. The college has agreed to allow employees to work at Luther's RAGBRAI event for up to two hours as part of the normal paid work day (overtime pay will not be permitted). Supervisors must give verbal consent to employees to participate.

Luther College Admissions is also asking for volunteers (unpaid) to walk in the Nordic Fest Parade at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 29. Walkers will meet at the fairgrounds at 10 a.m.

Plan to wear a blue Luther shirt when assisting with these events. Don't have one? No problem, just be sure to indicate your t-shirt size in the form and the Admissions office will provide one for you.

The Decorah Historic Preservation Commission, which includes emeriti faculty, Mark Z. Breakpoint book discussion

Brad Chamberlain and Diane Gossman will guide a discussion of the book "Breakpoint: The Changing Marketplace for Higher Education" at 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 25, in the Hovde room in Preus Library. In "Breakpoint," Jon McGee shows how higher education is in the midst of an extraordinary moment of demographic, economic and cultural transition that has significant implications for how colleges understand their mission, their market and their management. Full-time regional admissions counselor or assistant director of admissions: This position will be responsible for recruitment of students from the Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota area. This position will physically be located in the greater Minneapolis area, with the candidate working from a home office. Based on the level of experience for the successful candidate, the title will be either Regional Admissions Counselor or Assistant Director. A bachelor's degree is required, and applicants must have a valid driver's license. As an Admissions Counselor, one year of relevant post graduate experience is recommended. To be considered for the Assistant Director level, the successful candidate should have a minimum of four years of experience.

Programmer analyst: Seeking a motivated, detail-oriented programmer analyst to develop software solutions and provide support and security for information systems serving students, faculty, staff and alumni. The analyst will join the team of software developers at Luther. Knowledge of procedural computer languages and experience using SQL databases is required. The candidate should have excellent analytical and communication skills. Technical knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server, web APIs, security, and network interfaces is desired. The campus workplace is a mix of Windows, Linux and Mac.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS

Messier 23, also known as M23, is an open cluster in the constellation Sagittarius. Madilyn Heinke, Luther junior of Seymour, Wisconsin, is researching and observing Eclipsing Binary stars and Long Period Variable stars in M23 as part of her summer research at the college. Heinke is working with Jeff Wilkerson, Luther professor of physics, associate dean and director of faculty development, on this ongoing project.

With racial tensions on the rise, Samantha Rabang, Luther senior of West Des Moines, Iowa, has chosen to research the contributions of prejudice and emotional intelligence in interpreting emotions for her summer student-faculty collaborative research project at the college. Rabang is working with Stephanie Travers, Luther associate professor of psychology, on her project "Misinterpreting Facial Emotions of African Americans: Are Caucasians Prejudiced of Just Emotionally Inept?"

Whether you want to sit or stand, move or be still, interact with people or not; we have jobs for everyone. We are opening early Friday for the RAGBRAI riders, so even more help than usual is needed. Lefse demonstrators needed: In addition to selling warm lefse at Nordic Fest, our booth also has a demonstrator in the front window for people to "ooh" and "aah" over.
