COLLEGE OPERATIONS

New interim dean for institutional equity and inclusion

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Lisa M. Scott as Luther's new interim dean for institutional equity and inclusion. Scott will begin her service at Luther August 1. She will serve as the first dean for institutional equity and inclusion at the college, a re-visioning of the former position of executive director of the Diversity Center. As a member of the senior administrative leadership team, Scott will provide key leadership and a strong voice on issues of diversity, equity and inclusion across campus. More information will be available once she is on campus.

I would like to extend a thank you to the search advisory committee for their work in bringing Ms. Scott to campus. The committee included Matt Bills, Anita Carrasco, Sophia Engelman, Luigi Enriquez, Ron Ferguson, Aaron Hafner, Mike Johnson, Thomas Johnson, Kevin Kraus, Corey Landstrom, Chivonne Marlow, Iloria Phoenix and Terry Sparkes.

Upper campus closed to motorized vehicles July 28

The Luther community will be offering a big blue welcome to all RAGBRAI riders passing through Decorah Friday, July 28—College Spirit Day! Much of our welcome will take place along the route on College Drive, but riders will also be encouraged to take the "Luther Loop" through campus. For the safety of all riders involved, upper campus will be closed to motorized traffic from 6 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Walking or biking to work that day is encouraged, though parking and access to campus will continue to be available in the Regents and Farwell lots. Call for RAGBRAI workers and parade walkers

Luther College is welcoming RAGBRAI riders through campus Friday, July 28. The college has agreed to allow employees to work at Luther's RAGBRAI event for up to two hours as part of the normal paid work day (overtime pay will not be permitted). Supervisors must give verbal consent to employees to participate.

Luther College Admissions is also asking for volunteers (unpaid) to walk in the Nordic Fest Parade at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 29. Walkers will meet at the fairgrounds at 10 a.m.

Plan to wear a blue Luther shirt when assisting with these events. Don't have one? No problem, just be sure to indicate your t-shirt size in the form and the Admissions office will provide one for you.

Breakpoint book discussion

Brad Chamberlain and Diane Gossman will guide a discussion of the book "Breakpoint: The Changing Marketplace for Higher Education" at 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 25, in the Hovde room in Preus Library. In "Breakpoint," Jon McGee shows how higher education is in the midst of an extraordinary moment of demographic, economic and cultural transition that has significant implications for how colleges understand their mission, their market and their management. Steph Fretham and Gwen Strand attended the International C. elegans Conference at UCLA where Trevor Kao '18, presented the poster "Assessing the influence of PI3K/Akt signaling integrity on metabolic activity and oxidative status in C. elegans" and Leah Barkema '18, and Marta Williams '19, presented the poster "PI3K/Akt signaling influences neuronal function in C. elegans."

As baby-boomers age and there are more middle-aged citizens than ever before, there is a need to know how their actions and attitudes affect their own health and the health of others. Ananda Easley '18, is researching the group's psychological and social development that occurs in middle adulthood and how it correlates with alcohol use for her summer research project. She is working with David Bishop, Luther professor of psychology.

And finally...

In honor of 7-Eleven's 90th birthday on Tuesday, July 11, here are some fun facts about the convenience store chain!:

• 7-Eleven was the first convenience store to sell gas alongside the usual groceries and items that could be found at convenience stores.
• 7-Eleven was the first convenience store to sell coffee to-go.
• The chain was initially called "Tote'm Stores" due to the fact that the first location had a totem pole in the front, as well as the idea that customers would "tote" away their purchases from the store.
• The name 7-Eleven came about when the stores expanded their hours from 7 a.m.-11 p.m.
• To celebrate the company's birthday, 7-Eleven gives away about 500,000 gallons of Slurpees a year in North America alone.
• While most 7-Eleven locations in America are simply a convenience store and gas station, many locations across the globe are hubs for younger customers, touting perks such as free wi-fi and live music.
