ANNOUNCEMENT

President Carlson has announced the change of the reporting line for Information Technology Services from the Office of the President to the Vice President for Finance and Administration, effective immediately. ITS joins Facilities, Office of Financial Services, Human Resources, Luther Book Shop and Dining Services as other reporting lines for the Vice President for Finance and Administration. Given its important role in the academic program, ITS will retain its close working relationship with the Academic Dean's office.

Upper campus closed to motorized vehicles July 28

The Luther community is offering a big blue welcome to all RAGBRAI riders passing through Decorah Friday, July 28—College Spirit Day! Much of our welcome is taking place along the route on College Drive, but riders will also be encouraged to take the "Luther Loop" through campus. For the safety of all riders involved, upper campus will be closed to motorized traffic from 6 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Walking or biking to work that day is encouraged, though parking and access to campus will continue to be available in the Regents and Farwell lots. Farwell Hall will be open, with elevator access the entire day. No key card access needed.

Last call for RAGBRAI workers and parade walkers

Luther College is welcoming RAGBRAI riders through campus Friday, July 28. The college has agreed to allow employees to work at Luther's RAGBRAI event for up to two hours as part of the normal paid work day (overtime pay will not be permitted). Supervisors must give verbal consent to employees to participate.

Luther College Admissions is also asking for volunteers (unpaid) to walk in the Nordic Fest Parade at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 29. Walkers will meet at the fairgrounds at 10 a.m.

Plan to wear a blue Luther shirt when assisting with these events. Don't have one? No problem, just be sure to indicate your T-shirt size in the form and the Admissions office will provide one for you.

If you don't get a chance to sign up before the Friday RAGBRAI event, please come to the main entrance anytime between 7:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Friday to be assigned to a volunteer station.

Book Shop extended hours

The Book Shop will be open 7 a.m.-4:45 p.m. Friday, July 28, for RAGBRAI riders taking the "Luther Loop." Riders are offered free shipping on all in-store purchases.

From 8-11 a.m. during RAGBRAI, the Book Shop will host a book signing for Dan Kuester '84, who is promoting his book, "Green Wave." 

The Book Shop will be open 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, July 29, for Nordic Fest.

New at luther.edu

On the Alumni Profiles page, physician assistant Elise Sinwell '11 shares how a variety of Luther experiences, from biology coursework to learning medical terminology in Spanish on the Ecuador J-term to having a variety of work-study positions, all set her up for success in graduate school.

Alanna Spencer '16, now teaching middle and high school math in Alaska, discusses how her Luther training prepared her to connect with a variety of students. "Luther's education program forced me to consider how to reach students who don't have the same background as me," Alanna says. "This is very important because as a teacher I have to be able to connect with all of my students, regardless of their environment or upbringing."

On the Undergraduate Research page, read how Rebecca Buse '19 and Victoria Christman, are researching this summer the effects of laws on access to legal abortions. "The summer was a wonderful time to strengthen my confidence as a student and researcher," Buse says.

Luther pledges to support local municipal electric utility

Luther has pledged $15,000 to Decorah Power, a local citizens group, towards a feasibility study of a Municipal Electric Utility for Decorah. An MEU is a community owned electric utility, of which there are 136 in Iowa. Decorah has the option to consider an MEU because the 25-year electricity franchise agreement with Alliant Energy expires in 2018.

According to Decorah Power, a public electric utility could offer Decorah-area residents an opportunity to invest in local initiatives and promote local community ownership of Decorah's energy future. It could also help Decorah residents and businesses exercise local control over their sustainability and carbon reduction goals through locally owned electricity generation.

Fine Arts Collection reminder

As the campus settles into the depths of summer, faculty and staff are moving offices and resetting spaces. As a reminder, only Fine Arts Collection workers should be moving art work. Luther students receive funding for summer internships

For the third consecutive year, Luther has combined funding from alumni donors and philanthropic agencies to give financial support to Luther students completing a variety of internships. During the summer of 2017, 38 Luther students received educational grants of up to $2,000 to help defray the costs associated with internships in locations that included nine states, the District of Colombia and six other countries.

Kirk Neubauer, who has worked at Luther for more than 39 years, has announced his retirement, effective July 31. We congratulate Kirk and thank him for his dedicated service to the college.  

Job postings

Coordinator of diversity recruitment or assistant director of admissions-diversity recruitment: The successful candidate will work with area programs serving under represented students and support diversity, as well as assist in the recruitment and retention efforts for Luther. Candidates must have a valid driver's license and a positive driving record that will enable them to be insured through the college. A bachelor's degree is required with academic preparation in any discipline. Spanish speakers are strongly encouraged to apply. As an admissions counselor, one year of relevant postgraduate experience is recommended. To be considered for the assistant director level, the successful candidate should have a minimum of four years of experience.

Welcome Center information operator: The information operator is a .30 FTE position, requiring 16 hours/week for nine months/year. Hours will generally be between 7:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., including some weekend and some weekday hours to be determined. High school diploma or equivalent required, as well as basic computer and clerical skills, extensive customer service experience, good verbal and written communication skills and ability to operate two way radio and telephone equipment. Successful candidate must be able to sit for prolonged periods of time.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS

Former Luther student Troy Price was elected the new chair of the Iowa Democratic Party July 22. Price, former executive director of the party, was chosen by the party's state central committee to succeed Derek Eadon, who resigned earlier this summer for medical reasons. A Durant native, Price also worked in the administrations of Govs. Tom Vilsack and Chet Culver and led One Iowa, the state's largest LGBT advocacy group.

Over the course of the last 10 years, Decorah and other communities across northeastern Iowa have experienced an increase in floods characterized as 100-year floods. Halina Pyzdrowski '18, of Minnetonka, Minnesota, is researching flood resilience in the Upper Iowa Watershed. She is working with Rachel Brummel, Steve Holland, Jon Jensen and Britt Rhodes.

Alexandra White presented "Build Your Own Company: An Active Learning Approach to Teaching Management" at the Teaching Professor Conference in St. Louis, Missouri.

This being the 500th year after the Reformation, Sam Scheidt '18, of La Crosse, Wisconsin, has been selected to research ecumenical topics for his summer research project at the college. Scheidt is working with Wanda Deifelt on his project "Reformations: Past and Present."
