ANNOUNCEMENTS

Fall semester Opening Convocation Sept 1.

Celebrate the start of a new academic year and welcome the class of 2020 at Opening Convocation at 9:40 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 1, in the Center for Faith and Life. The convocation speaker is Karen Joy Fowler, author of "We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves," the 2016 summer reading. The book explores behavioral science, the ethics of animal research as well as animal rights, and a unique bond in a not-quite-ordinary family.

All students, faculty and staff are encouraged to participate. If possible, offices should close so all can attend.

Assistance with flood clean-up and recovery

If you or a Luther colleague has been affected by last week's heavy rains and flooding and would appreciate some help, please contact the President's Office with your name or your colleague's name and a brief description of your needs. Contact Suzanne Lyndon, <suzanne.lyndon> or 387-1527, or Marcia Bullerman, <bullerma> or 387-1001. The President's Office will coordinate with College Ministries and Human Resources and will reach out to the campus community with a list of needs, whether it's for clean-up help, donations, or preparing and delivering meals.

Ways to help flood victims in our community

The Decorah Area Chamber of Commerce is partnering with Northeast Iowa Community Action Corporation to start a flood relief fund similar to the one they developed in 2008. Donations can be dropped off at the Chamber office, 507 W. Water St. Make checks payable to "NEICAC-Flood Fund" and write the county you wish to have the funds designated for in the memo line. Flood victims can fill out applications in September and October; a committee will review the applications and allocate funds.

Clothing can be donated at the Spectrum Thrift Store, 607 Washington St., and the Depot Outlet, 510 Montgomery St. 

Area food pantries are expecting an influx of usage and will accept donations, but they can make cash go much further than donated food items. First Lutheran Church is seeing a greater need for donations to their discretionary fund, which is used when clients need money for a hotel or supplies.

Updated hazing policy

Last spring, the Campus Life Committee reviewed prospective changes to the hazing policy. The Student Senate, Inter-Greek Council and the Athletics Department had opportunities to offer input during the revision process. The Campus Life Committee voted in support of the proposed changes and the President's Cabinet reviewed and the President approved the revised policy. The policy is available to view in the Student Handbook.

Wellness resource for Luther students 

Wellness has a new resource for Luther students. Student Health 101 is an interactive online program engaging students in living healthfully and succeeding in school and beyond. Monthly editions are available online and via Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, and there is also a monthly version for employees and parents to stay apprised of what students are receiving. Check out the August orientation issue for students and employees. To opt-in for monthly notices, contact <wellness>.

Employee wellness fall activities registration 

On-campus yoga, pilates and tai chi classes for current Luther employees and spouses begin the week of Sept. 5 and run for 6 weeks. All activities will be held in CFA Studio II.  

  • Tai chi meets Tuesdays from 5-6 p.m.
  • Pilates meets Wednesdays from 11:10 a.m.-noon
  • Yoga meets Thursdays from 12:45-1:35 p.m.

The cost is $24 for each six-week session. Payment is due before the first day of class by cash or check, payable to Luther College.To register, email <wellness>.

On the undergraduate research page, Vicky Torrillas Pizzorno '17, working with Pedro Dos Santos, takes an in-depth look at political perceptions before and after crisis, examining newspaper coverage of Brazilian president Dilma Rousseff. 

Marshall Stay '17, and Colin Betts discuss their geophysical exploration of northeast Iowa's prehistoric mounds to determine the possible techniques used to build them.

Book Shop news

Have questions about this year's summer reading, "We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves"? Bring your questions and join the author, Karen Joy Fowler, for a lively and engaging discussion of the novel at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 31, in the CFL Main Hall. A book signing will follow the discussion in the CFL lobby. The Book Shop will have books for purchase at the event.

Wellness fitness swimming starts Aug. 31

Masters Swimming instruction and workouts begin Aug. 31 at the Luther Aquatic Center. Register online for a single session or consecutive one-month sessions. Approximately 12 workouts are offered each month: Tuesdays from 6-7 a.m., Wednesdays from 6:30-7:30 p.m. and 8-9 a.m. most Saturdays.

Classes are open to swimmers of all fitness and ability levels; the only requirement is the ability to swim one length of the pool. Cost is $18 per one-month session for Luther faculty, staff, spouses and students and is subsidized by the Wellness Program. Cost is $32 for community members. Payment by check is due the first day of each session; make checks payable to Decorah Masters. Contact decorahmastersswimming@gmail.com with questions.

Admissions Office table drapes

Over the years, the Admissions Office has allowed other departments on campus to borrow table drapes for various events. Unfortunately, the drapes have sometimes been returned in poor condition, and this past year, several drapes were not returned at all. As a result, Admissions is no longer able to accommodate requests for use of the table drapes. Thanks for understanding.

Take an alcohol screening, get a free drink

Counseling Service and Wellness, in partnership with Northeast Iowa Behavioral Health, will offer free alcohol use screenings from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 1, and Wednesday, Sept. 14, in the Union lobby. Every student who completes a screening gets a coupon for a free Nordic Brew shake. Please encourage students to attend to learn more about Luther's substance use policies and low-risk choices.

ComedySportz performance Sept. 2

SAC Leadership invites the community to laugh and interact with ComedySportz at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 2, in the CFL Main Hall. Hailed as a fast-paced comedy show that is fun for all ages, ComedySportz is improvisational comedy played as a "sport" by members of the World Comedy League. The event is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Hypnotist Jim Want Sept. 3

With more than 9,000 professional engagements to his name and a lengthy career spent building a fiercely entertaining repertoire, master hypnotist Jim Wand returns to Luther at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 3, in the CFL Main Hall. Tickets are $10 and may be purchased online at tickets.luther.edu or at the Ticket Office. Sponsored by SAC Spotlight. 

Faculty art exhibition Sept. 7-Oct. 14

Work by Luther College art faculty will be on display Sept. 7-Oct. 14 in the Kristin Wigley-Fleming Fine Arts Gallery in the CFA. This year's exhibition includes work by Richard Merritt, Joe Madrigal, Ben Moore, David Kamm, Aaron Lurth and Harley Refsal. A reception with the artists will take place at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1. The exhibit and reception are open to the public with no charge for admission.

AAUP chapter meeting Sept. 9

Luther's chapter of the American Association of University Professors will meet at 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9, in Baker Commons. The mission of the AAUP includes advancing academic freedom and shared governance, and promoting the economic security of faculty. All faculty interested in discussing issues at Luther related to this mission are invited to attend, whether or not you are an official member of the AAUP.

Religion Department open house Sept. 14

The Religion Department invites members of the Luther community to an open house from 4-5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 14, in Hammarskjold Lounge. Sympathy

To the family of Mary Ellen Kitundu, who passed away in July 2016 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, at Central Lutheran Church in Winona. Mary Ellen joined the Luther faculty in 1989 as an assistant professor of nursing. After Luther, she taught at Winona State University and then returned to her husband's native country of Tanzania, where she worked to expand healthcare access as president of International Health Partners-Tanzania.

Departures

Bob Puffer has chosen to leave Luther College to pursue other opportunities. His last day at Luther is Dec. 17.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS, ETC.

Oyvind T. Gulliksen has published an essay, "Scandinavian America Literature," in "Dictionary of Midwestern Literature, Vol. II," published by Indiana University Press. His chapter "Norwegian Literature and the Church of Norway, 1800 - 2000" recently appeared (in Norwegian) in a book titled "Mellom gammelt og nytt," a University of Agder publication.

Kaley Herman '15, Alex Hein '16, Njabulo Maseko '15, and their advisor Loren Toussaint recently had a paper accepted for publication in the American Psychological Association's journal "International Perspectives in Psychology: Research, Practice, and Consultation." This represents almost a decade's worth of work and collaboration between Luther College and Meaningful World, a non-governmental organization founded and led by Ani Kalayjian, who is also a co-author of the paper.

Loren Toussaint and colleagues from several universities also recently published, "Forgiveness Working: Forgiveness, Health, and Productivity in the Workplace" in the peer-reviewed journal, American Journal of Health Promotion. A story in the online magazine Greater Good, titled "The Power of Forgiveness at Work," featured their research paper "Forgiveness Working."  

Amy Weldon has two books under contract for 2017: "The Hands-On Life: How to Wake Yourself Up and Save The World" (Wipf and Stock/Cascade) and "The Writer's Eye: Observation and Inspiration for Creative Writers" (Bloomsbury). Other new work is forthcoming in "Teaching Eudora Welty: 21st-Century Approaches" (UP of Mississippi) and Orion Magazine.

Sarah E. Wilder, with co-author Kristen Carr, published "Attachment Style and the Risks of Seeking Social Support: Variations between Friends and Siblings," in the Aug. 2016 issue of Southern Communication Journal.
