ANNOUNCEMENTS
Ways to help flood victims in our community
The Decorah Area Chamber of Commerce have partnered with Northeast Iowa Community Action Corporation to start a flood relief fund similar to the one they developed in 2008. Donations can be dropped off at the Chamber office, 507 W. Water St. Make checks payable to "NEICAC-Flood Fund" and write the county you wish to have the funds designated for in the memo line. Flood victims can fill out applications in September and October; a committee will review the applications and allocate funds.
Clothing can be donated at the Spectrum Thrift Store, 607 Washington St., and the Depot Outlet, 510 Montgomery St.
Area food pantries are expecting an influx of usage and will accept donations, but they can make cash go much further than donated food items. First Lutheran Church is seeing a greater need for donations to their discretionary fund, which is used when clients need money for a hotel or supplies.
COLLEGE OPERATIONS
Parking restriction notice
Luther is hosting several athletic events, including the All-American Cross Country meet Saturday, Sept. 10. As a result there will be considerable traffic and parking congestion in the Regents Center area beginning at 6 a.m. that morning and into the early afternoon.The barn and city pool lots will be restricted to bus parking only starting at 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9. Students who usually park in the barn or pool lots may park in any student or general parking area on the main campus through the weekend.
Notice from Campus Safety and Security
Within the past few days Luther Safety and Security has received information that three different bicycles may have had their brakes tampered with on campus. Two of these incidents resulted in the rider being injured and their bikes damaged. The bikes were all parked at different locations. As a precaution we recommend riders check their brakes before riding and report any suspected tampering to Safety and Security. We also ask the community to report any suspicious activity near the bike racks immediately. The phone number for Safety and Security is 387-2111.

New online academic catalog
Luther's academic calendar has a new look. The new 2016-17 catalog features user-friendly navigation, a mobile-responsive design and the ability to see all courses that fulfill a given all-college requirement. We hope it will get lots of good use from faculty, staff and students alike. Employee Wellness fall activities registration
Pilates and tai chi begin this week and run for six weeks. All activities are held in the CFA Studio II. The cost is $24 for each six-week session with sessions open to current employees and spouses. To register email <wellness>. Payment is due by the first day of class by cash or check to Luther College. Please note that yoga is now full.
Tai Chi will be on Tuesdays from 5-6 p.m.

New just-for-fun books at Preus Library
New additions have been made to the Preus Library leisure reading collection. The leisure reading collection contains current and recent bestsellers and popular titles, both fiction and non-fiction. Visit often to see what's new! The list is updated as more books arrive. Please note: this is a new leisure reading list, so it may be necessary to update internet bookmarks.
Valders Lactation Room now open
A new Lactation Room is now open on campus. Located in a private space in Valders 247E, it offers a window, table, comfortable chair and electrical outlets. The lactation room will be open 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday. If the room is locked, please contact Tracy Elsbernd at the front desk of the Nursing Department, Valders 243.
Sinks are available in the nursing department office, Valders 243, and in the lab area. Jessica Raabe, the lab director, can assist with locating the sink. Her office is Valders 247D, next to the Lactation Room. Email Angela Kueny, <oldenban>, with any questions or concerns.
New at luther.edu
Tapiwa Manjengwa '18 discusses his passion for accounting, and why he chose to major in that discipline and in management: "It gives me the platform to go beyond the numbers; I've learned to understand business cost functions analyze financial statements, and make informed business decisions. I also decided on a management major because it complements accounting and focuses on the qualitative aspect of the business."

Updated hazing policy
Last spring, the Campus Life Committee reviewed prospective changes to the hazing policy. The Student Senate, Inter-Greek Council and the Athletics Department had opportunities to offer input during the revision process. The Campus Life Committee voted in support of the proposed changes and the President's Cabinet reviewed and the President approved the revised policy. The policy is available to view in the Student Handbook.
Wellness resource for Luther students
Wellness has a new resource for Luther students. Student Health 101 is an interactive online program engaging students in living healthfully and succeeding in school and beyond. Monthly editions are available online and via Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. There is also a monthly version for employees and parents to stay apprised of what students are receiving. Makerspace interest meeting Thursday, Sept. 8
Interested in creating a makerspace on campus? Come to an interest meeting in Olin 348 at 9:40 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 8. The group will brainstorm and share ideas about what resources that might exist on campus already, what a makerspace at Luther College might look like, and what opportunities might be made available to our students.
Luther College Emeriti Colloquium
The Luther College Emeriti Colloquium will meet at 3 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 8, in the Mott room. Robert Shedinger will present on the topic "Jihad: it's not what you think it is." All members of the Luther community are welcome.
Faculty Artist Series: Peter Lingen
With a repertoire of Renaissance lute music, Peter Lingen will perform a lute recital at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 8, in the NRH. Lingen performs on a 15-string historic reproduction of a 16th century lute. The program features works by John Dowland and William Byrd. The recital is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Alumni art exhibition at Luther College Sept. 5-Oct. 13
An art exhibition featuring the work of 13 Luther College art alumni will be displayed Sept. 5-Oct. 13 in Preus Library. This year's alumni exhibition features work by artists celebrating milestone reunions at Homecoming this year. Additional displays include the work of alumni artists, many of whom studied at the California Pond Farm studio of internationally renowned artist Marguerite Wildenhain. The exhibit is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Faculty art exhibition Sept. 7-Oct. 14
Work by art faculty will be on display Sept. 7-Oct. 14 in the Kristin Wigley-Fleming Fine Arts Gallery in the CFA. This year's exhibition includes work by Richard Merritt, Joe Madrigal, Ben Moore, David Kamm, Aaron Lurth and Harley Refsal. A reception with the artists will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1. Biology colloquium lecture Sept. 8
Michelle Burns '07, will present "(Not) As Seen on TV: The Reality of Forensic Science" at 9:40 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 8 in Valders 206. Burns works for the State Crime Laboratory DNA Unit, Wisconsin Department of Justice, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Event is open to the Luther community.
AAUP chapter meeting Sept. 9
Luther's chapter of the American Association of University Professors will meet at 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9, in Baker Commons. The mission of the AAUP includes advancing academic freedom and shared governance, and promoting the economic security of faculty. All faculty interested in discussing issues at Luther related to this mission are invited to attend, whether or not an official member of the AAUP.
Center Stage Series performance Sept. 10
One of London's longest-running comedies is bringing a new take on American history to the other side of the pond in "The Complete History of America (Abridged) - Election Edition." The Luther College Center Stage Series performance begins at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, in the CFL Main Hall. The show is performed by the Reduced Shakespeare Company, a three-man comedy troupe that takes long, serious subjects and abridges them to short, sharp comedies. Tickets can be purchased at the Ticket Office and online.
Decorah College Night
Luther College will host a college fair sponsored by the Iowa Association of College Admission Counselors from 6:30 - 8 p.m on Monday, Sept. 12. The fair will take place in the Regents Center's Sports and Recreation Center. Representatives from approximately 60 institutions will be on hand to discuss college and post secondary options with high school students and their families. There will also be financial aid information sessions at 6:45 and 7:30 p.m. The event is open to the community with no charge for admission.
Guest lecture: 'Behind Happy Faces: Talking About Mental Health'
Mental health advocate Ross Szabo will return to Luther at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13, in the CFL Main Hall. His talk, "Behind Happy Faces: Talking About Mental Health," is open to the public with no charge for admission. Szabo's story resonates with millions of college students who are putting on a happy face to hide their true emotions. He teaches students about the complexities of mental health issues and empowers them to seek help or help their friends seek help. Sponsored by SAC Leadership, Active Minds, Counseling and Wellness.

Take an alcohol screening, get a free drink
Counseling Service and Wellness, in partnership with Northeast Iowa Behavioral Health, will offer free alcohol use screenings from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 14, in the Union lobby. Every student who completes a screening gets a coupon for a free Nordic Brew shake. Please encourage students to attend to learn more about Luther's substance use policies and low-risk choices.
Religion Department open house Sept. 14
The Religion Department invites members of the Luther community to an open house from 4-5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 14, in Hammarskjold Lounge. This is an opportunity to learn more about the work of the department by interacting with department members and our majors and minors. Refreshments will be served.
Fabric of Peace project
The Women and Gender Studies Department is proud to host the Fabric of Peace project. It is a collection of three quilts on display in Gregerson Gallery in the CFA and the Women and Gender Equality Center. Three quilts, all made by women pursuing peace in the world, will be displayed during the month of September. Christel Bradey will talk about the project during an opening reception at 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 16. All are invited to the reception and peace walk around campus to follow.
Storybook reading and signing Sept. 17
The Book Shop and the Luther Education Department will host the seventh annual Storybook Reading at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 17. Children of all ages are invited to the Book Shop to enjoy cookies and listen as Luther students read from their favorite storybooks. Mary Brooks will sign copies and read her book,"Bampa's Bag," from 1-3 p.m. Brooks, a Decorah native, is a retired educator and head judge of the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

Guest Lecture: Doug Tallamy
Doug Tallamy, professor of entomology and wildlife at the University of Delware, will give two lectures, both at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 20, and Wednesday, Sept. 21, in Valders Hall of Science Room 206 on the Luther College campus. His lectures focus on specialized relationships between animals and plants and native landscaping to create a biodiverse-rich yard that promotes these relationships. Both lectures are open to the public with no charge for admission.
Luther College Writers Festival Sept. 23-24
Critically-acclaimed authors Erik Larson, Bret Anthony Johnston and Jane Hamilton are the featured speakers at the 2016 Luther College Writers Festival, Sept. 23-24, on the Luther campus. Conference registration and a full schedule of events is available online.
More than 25 contemporary writers of fiction, poetry and nonfiction will read their work, participate in panel discussions and be available for discussion and book signings throughout the conference. Local authors Carol Gilbertson, Charlie Langton, June Melby and Amy Weldon will read from their work and Decorah visual artists David Kamm and John Hall will discuss the relationship between image and text.

Assistant director, Center for Ethics and Public Engagement: the assistant director is responsible for the management of the CEPE office and communications, and will collaborate in planning and coordinating the CEPE programs and events. Melanie Batoff presented her paper "Obscuring the Visitatio sepulchri through Categorization" at the Cantus Planus conference on Aug. 3, in Dublin, Ireland. Cantus Planus is a study group of the International Musicological Society that is devoted to the study of medieval plainchant. More than a hundred chant scholars attended.
Dean Vesperman wrote "Game Theory in the Social Studies Classroom." This article, published in "The Social Studies," explores using game theory in social studies classrooms as a heuristic to aid students in understanding strategic decision making. The article provides examples of several simple games teachers can use. Next, it addresses how to help students design their own simple games.
