ANNOUNCEMENTS

Safety alert

Luther College Safety and Security received information from the Decorah Police Department that a female student was sexually assaulted at approximately 12:30 a.m. on Sept. 11 as she walked from downtown to the Luther campus. No physical injuries were reported from the incident. Any additional information should be reported to Campus Safety and Security at 387-2103.

Luther College will not tolerate sexual misconduct in any form. More information on Luther's sexual misconduct policies can be found here.

Ways to help flood victims in our community

The Decorah Area Chamber of Commerce have partnered with Northeast Iowa Community Action Corporation to start a flood relief fund similar to the one they developed in 2008. Donations can be dropped off at the Chamber office, 507 W. Water St. Make checks payable to "NEICAC-Flood Fund" and write the county you wish to have the funds designated for in the memo line. Flood victims can fill out applications in September and October; a committee will review the applications and allocate funds.

Clothing can be donated at the Spectrum Thrift Store, 607 Washington St., and the Depot Outlet, 510 Montgomery St.

Area food pantries are expecting an influx of usage and will accept donations, but they can make cash go much further than donated food items. First Lutheran Church is seeing a greater need for donations to their discretionary fund, which is used when clients need money for a hotel or supplies.

Two of these incidents resulted in the rider being injured and their bikes damaged. The bikes were all parked at different locations. As a precaution we recommend riders check their brakes before riding and report any suspected tampering to Safety and Security. We also ask the community to report any suspicious activity near the bike racks immediately. The phone number for Safety and Security is 387-2111.

Now, what should we read for Summer 2017?  The Luther community is invited to send their recommendations for the 2017 campus-wide summer reading to the Paideia Program at <sullivre>. Here's a history of recent titles.

New online academic catalog

Luther's academic calendar has a new look. The new 2016-17 catalog features user-friendly navigation, a mobile-responsive design and the ability to see all courses that fulfill a given all-college requirement. Star Trek 50th anniversary event

The original "Star Trek" television series premiered Sept. 8, 1966. The provocatively diverse crew explored worlds, peoples and ideas that mashed up Shakespeare and Plato with pulp science fiction tropes, cardboard sets and the thespianism of William Shatner.

An event will be held in honor of 50 years of "Star Trek" at Luther College in early November. Fans, critics, lovers and haters of "Trek" are invited to give a 5-10 minute talk on their relationship to the show. Whether it be the original series, later series, movies or spoofs like "Galaxy Quest", members of the community are invited to speak and to show one short clip.

Please email Andy Hageman <hagan03> with interest or questions or suggestions.
