Safety Alert
The Student Life Office took the report of a female who was sexually assaulted (groped) somewhere between the time of midnight and 1 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 25, on College Drive as she walked from the intersection of Leif Erickson Drive to the Luther College campus. No physical injuries were reported from the incident.
According to the student, three men were involved. They were described as being of light complexion. One male was described as being tall and of medium to heavier build. The other two were described as average male height. All three were taller than the female student. As the student was extracting herself from the situation, she slapped the taller male and may have scratched him in the face as a result. If you have any information that would assist in solving this crime, please contact Campus Safety and Security at 387-2103.
Neuroscience approved as newest major at Luther College
In September, Luther College's Board of Regents unanimously approved neuroscience as the newest major in the college's curriculum. Neuroscience, the interdisciplinary study of how the nervous system functions to control every aspect of humanness, covers everything from basic processes like regulating body temperature to more complex functions like movement, perception, behavior, emotion, desires and memory.

2016-17 Texts and Issues Lecture Series: Who Do You Trust?
This year's Paideia texts and issues theme, "Who Do You Trust?" was developed by the Paideia Endowment Governing Board, the Religion department and the Visual and Performing Arts department. Drawing from a wide variety of texts from the arts, sciences and humanities, the series attempts to facilitate discussions of personal and institutional trust: who or what are people predisposed to trust? Is trust a fundamental element of character, community or culture? What are the results of mistrust or betrayal?"

Oct. 4: "Civility and Trusting God: Thoughts on Risk and Society," Storm Bailey, associate professor of philosophy.
Nov. 1: "Trust in the Commons: On Interdependence and Saving the World," Rachel Brummel, assistant professor of environmental studies.

Sustainability Tracking Assessment and Rating System
Over the course of the year the Center for Sustainable Communities will be collecting information from offices across campus as part of our next STARS, or Sustainability Tracking Assessment and Rating System, report. We plan to submit next summer. This is our third time completing this comprehensive report as an institution. Thanks in advance for your willingness to collaborate in providing information to feed into this process.
Gift to Luther College archive
The Preus Library archive now has volume two of "Professional Activity from 2004-2015 by Richard G. Cole, Emeritus Professor of History." This bound volume has copies of book reviews, journal articles, chapters in books and citations of Cole's work by other authors. The archive also contains volume one, which includes copies of Cole's printed materials from 1966-2000. For questions about accessibility of these volumes contact Hayley R. Wellness sponsored reading
As wellness launches their 2016-2017 Mindfulness campaign they invite you to stimulate your wellbeing with the first sponsored reading of the year. Head to theStudent Research pageto see whatBethany Noltner '17 learned in her project about a topic crucial to higher education, "An Analysis of Liberal Arts Comprehensive Tuition Pricing." She conducted her research in partnership with Don Jones, associate professor of management, and Ryan Torkelson, assistant professor of accounting. "They helped me look beyond Luther and at the bigger picture of the higher education market today,” Noltner says.

Plant giveaway day
Need some greenery to spruce up your room or office? The Luther College Grounds Crew and the Center for Sustainable Communities are excited to announce the annual Plant giveaway day on Tuesday, Sept. 27. Students, faculty and staff who come to the Valders Greenhouse from 9:40-10:50 a.m. will be able to pick up a free potted plant. All plants have been grown from clippings of plants already on campus.
Open mic night
Hear students perform in an open mic night from 6:30-9 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27, in Marty's. This event is hosted by the Student Activities Council, contact <sachomecoming> with questions.
Asian Film Series
The community is invited to attend a screening of the Chinese film, "The Piano in a Factory," at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 28 in Main 218. Sponsored by the Department of Modern Languages and Literature and program of Asian Studies, the film tells the story of a poor and recently laid off factory worker, Chen, and his fight for custody of his beloved daughter. After his wife leaves him for a rich business man, Chen must compete with her for custody of his daughter, who has decided she will live with whomever can provide her with a piano. Jazz night
The Luther College Jazz Band and Jazz Orchestra will perform several selections from 8:30-10 p.m. Sept. 30 in Marty's as part of Homecoming weekend.
Book signing
Luther Book Shop will host a book signing with writer Jerry Johnson from 2:30–4 p.m Saturday, Oct. 1 during Homecoming weekend. Johnson, retired director of public information, will sign copies of his new book "Ivory and Gold," a historical novel based on the slave trade in East Africa at the turn of the 19th century. Copies of his four previously published books will also be available.
'stained glass' performance Oct. 1
The Visual and Performing Arts department presents Luther class of 1991 alumnus Patrick M. Strain's original play "stained glass" at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, in Storre Theatre. "stained glass" offers a view of America set squarely in the intersection of religion and sexuality. There is no charge for admission, but tickets are required. Phi Beta Kappa symposium on the liberal arts
The Luther College Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa is hosting a Homecoming Symposium at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, in the CFL Recital Hall. Gracia Grindal, professor emerita of rhetoric at Luther Seminary, will present "Ironies and Surprises: The Legacies of Linka Preus and Elisabeth Koren." Grindal's new book, "Unstoppable: The Norwegian Pioneers Educate their Daughters," relies heavily on sources related to Linka Preus and Elisabeth Koren in the Luther College Archives. The symposium, with a reception to follow, is open to the community with no charge for admission.
'Civility and Trusting God: Thoughts on Risk and Society'
In the opening lecture of the 2016-17 Paideia Texts and Issues series, Storm Bailey will discuss what it could mean to trust God and how that trust could impact civility and society. The lecture will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4, in the CFL recital hall. The lecture is open to the public with no charge for admission. Reception to follow in Qualley Lounge.
Escalation Workshop Oct. 5
Most people know and care about someone who is or will be in an abusive relationship. An Escalation Workshop will take place from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5, in Valders 206. The workshop includes a film and discussion that will help attendees identify unhealthy relationships and give tools to help themselves and others in these situations. The workshop is sponsored by Counseling Service, Wellness, NASA, Student Life and Helping Services for Northeast Iowa.
CEPE Election Roundtable
Living through a U.S. presidential election cycle can feel a lot like a visit to the circus. Members of the community are invited to join a panel of Luther students to discuss international thoughts on the American electoral process. This roundtable consists of a panel of students who studied abroad last spring. They will share their stories and respond to audience questions. Refreshments will be provided by the Center for Ethics and Public Engagement.
Center Stage Series: 'Aca-Perfect'
From the creative mind behind "Pitch Perfect" and "The Sing-Off" comes a performance that takes a cappella to a whole new level. The Luther College Center Stage Series presents Vocalosity's "The Aca-Perfect Concert Experience" at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7, in Luther's Center for Faith and Life Main Hall. Vocalosity is an all-new a cappella group that consists of 10 dynamic voices covering current chart-topping hits. Ticket information is available at http://www.tickets.luther.edu.
'Twelfth Night' performances Oct. 6-8
Luther College's Visual and Performing Arts department presents Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night," Oct. 6-8 in the Jewel Theatre in Luther's Center for the Arts. Two different casts will perform at alternate shows 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6, 9:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7, and 1:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 8. Anyone with a Luther ID can receive two tickets to see each of the casts at different performances.
Fourth annual Faculty Research Symposium
The fourth annual Faculty Research Symposium on Luther's campus will be Saturday, Oct. 8. Introductions will begin at 10 a.m. in Valders 206 and panels will continue throughout the day in both Valders 206 and Olin 102. The event is open to the public, no charge for admission, detailed program will be available soon on the Dean's Office website.
Intended for a broad audience, this all-day event showcases the intellectual curiosity and cross-disciplinary dialogue that is at the heart of Luther's liberal arts educational tradition. Modeled on the successful Undergraduate Research Symposium held each spring, the Faculty Research Symposium seeks to provide a forum for Luther faculty to share and discuss their research, projects and passions with the broader Decorah community as well as with Luther students, faculty and staff.
Faculty Artist Series: Heather Armstrong
Heather Armstrong will perform an oboe recital at 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, in the NRH. The recital will feature works by Gerald Finzi, Alyssa Morris and Decorah composer Ben Hippen. Additionally, Armstrong will collaborate with Miko Kominami, piano, and Carol Hester, flute. The recital is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Guest Recital: Marcin Murawski
Featuring the works of Iowa composer Michael Kimber, Polish violist Marcin Murawski will perform a viola recital at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 9, in the NRH. Murawski, born in Poznan, Poland, in 1974, has given master viola classes and recitals throughout Europe. The recital is open to the public with no charge for admission.
'Transfer of Memory' art exhibit on display Oct. 21-Dec. 5
"Transfer of Memory," a touring exhibit consisting of photographs and stories by Minnesota Holocaust survivors, will be on display, Oct. 21-Dec. 5, in the CFL Gallery. Luther will be the first Iowa site to host "Transfer of Memory." The exhibition, brought to Luther by the Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas, is open to the public with no charge for admission.

To the family and friends of Christina Moorcroft, who passed away Monday, Sept. 19. Chris was a member of the accounting faculty from 1982 through 2001. She also served as the college accountant from 1978 to 1982. We mourn her death and reflect on the impact she had on the accounting program and many, many accounting majors. Chris is survived by her husband, Bill, emeriti professor of psychology; children, Marcy, Pat and Drew '94; and eight grandchildren. Brooke Joyce's new work for chamber ensemble, "Noria al-Bisriyya," was performed by the contemporary music ensemble Durward on Sept. 8, in Cedar Rapids. The piece is inspired by ancient water wheels in Hama, Syria.
J. R. Christianson is writing a biography of the astronomer, Tycho Brahe (1546-1601), in the series "Renaissance Lives" from Reaktion Press of London. He has received a grant from the Danish National Bank to work on the book at the Royal Library and Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen. He and Birgitte will be living until March 15, 2017, at Nyhavn 18, DK-1051 Copenhagen K, Denmark.
Todd Green participated in President Obama's Sixth Annual Interfaith Community Service Campus Challenge at Gallaudet University on Sept. 22, in Washington, DC. He spoke about Luther College's Just Action Statement on Islamophobia as part of a panel dedicated to the theme "No Place for Hate: Campuses Take the Lead."
