COLLEGE OPERATIONS
Student Senate Forum: Campus and Community Safety Town Hall
Student Senate invites the Luther community to a Campus and Community Safety Town Hall at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9, in Valders 206. Over the past several months, campus has experienced several reported sexual assaults, an attempted break in at the college apartments, the loss of a classmate and other situations that have rocked our sense of safety. Come meet with Luther and Decorah Police Department officials to engage in conversation regarding crime prevention and reporting. There will be opportunities for questions. All interested students, faculty and staff are invited to join in this important conversation regarding our community.
Admissions report available via KATIE
Several changes have been made to the weekly admissions report to make it more accessible and to provide a clearer picture of where things stand at various times throughout the enrollment cycle.
- The report will now be distributed monthly. The October report is now available in KATIE. Each report will compare the previous month's activity to the same period the last two years.
- Luther faculty and staff can access the report via KATIE approximately one week after the end of each month. To view the report, search for "enrollment data" in the Search Courses box in the upper-right corner of any KATIE page. If prompted to enroll, accept.
- The report includes the number of visits, applications, acceptances and denials, deposits and paid drops (students who cancel after paying their deposit).
- The Visits section will begin to distinguish unique visitors from total visits.
- Each report will include a brief narrative that highlights key areas of interest and explains timing or other variables that might affect the comparison to data from previous years.
Because the September and October weekly reports had limited data in key areas such as deposits, the initial distribution date for the report was moved from the first week of September to the first week of November.

Update in Non-exempt Travel Pay policy

Escalation Workshop
The Escalation Workshop from the One Love Foundation is a 90-minute workshop designed to help spread knowledge and awareness about the consequences of relationship violence. The presentation consists of a film followed by a discussion and action planning. Those interested in hosting the workshop during class or another time may email <counseling>. The One Love Foundation was formed in honor of Yeardley Love who was murdered by her ex-boyfriend.
Reusing paper
The Document Center requests that going forward departments not to re-run paper that has previously been printed on one side through their printers or copiers. Similarly, do not re-use partially used label sheets. These materials change the first time they go through your copiers and printers and they can cause damage on the second pass. Dirt, oil and different toner types on the paper surface may cause damage to sensitive parts inside the machines and may end up costing more to fix than the savings of reusing the paper or the label pages in the machines.
Instead we are asking you to collect and drop off or send through campus mail any paper that has previously been printed on one side to the Document Center. We will repurpose it as note/scratch pads. The pads will be available free to anyone who comes into the Document Center. We can provide a small box for you to collect the paper in if needed. Partially used labels can be collected and sent to Mail Center where they will be reused to help label packages for pickup. Contact the Document Center, <naatje01>, with any questions.
International Education Week and Global Potluck
Nov. 14-19 marks the second anniversary of International Education Week at Luther, sponsored by the International Students & Allies Association. IEW is an annual worldwide celebration of international education and exchange. The ISAA would like to invite the Luther community to the Global Potluck. The potluck will take place at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 18, at in Norby Global House. The menu will be provided by student volunteers cooking a variety of ethnic dishes. Luther's United Way campaign still seeks donations
There's still time to submit your United Way donation to Human Resources. Contribute by this Thursday, Nov. 10, to be entered in the prize drawingfor a Luther sweatshirt from the Book Shop, tickets to The Nile Project concert from the Center Stage Series, Peace Brunch tickets from Dining Services or a full light spectrum lamp from Luther's Wellness Program. American Legion of Iowa Foundation $2,000 grant
Luther College received a grant of $2,000 from the American Legion of Iowa Foundation in support of scholarships for veterans. Foundation representative Dennis Soppe presented the grant check to Jeanie Lovell, Luther director of corporate and foundation relations and Aleesa Baakko, one of four Luther students to receive these scholarship funds.
Students to travel to Cannon Ball, North Dakota for Thanksgiving break
Several students have decided to spend their Thanksgiving break in Cannon Ball, North Dakota, to protest the Dakota Access Pipeline. The primary focus of the trip to stand in solidarity with a historically oppressed and marginalized people, and also to bring supplies. Information session on Peace Scholars Program
Faculty and staff are asked to encourage students to attend a discussion with Steinar Bryn and Anatolii Kyryliuk from the Nansen Center for Peace and Dialog in Lillehammer. They will learn about the Peace Scholars summer program in Norway, focused on the study of important issues and theories regarding conflict, war and peace. Two new faculty profiles focus on Dawn Reding and Andrew Last.
Reding, assistant professor of biology, talks about the research she's doing on bats and the prairie gray fox: what effect, if any, does Luther's wind turbine have on bat activity and fatality, and whether the prairie gray fox is genetically unique and warrants protection under the Endangered Species Act.
Andrew Last, assistant professor of music, feels he was guided to teach at Luther and says, "There's no question about it, I love coming to work each day knowing that I'll get to collaborate with an incredibly passionate group of young musicians."

Luther's brass ensembles to perform concert Nov. 9
Luther's brass ensembles will perform at Wednesday, Nov. 9, in the CFL Main Hall. The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission. Luther's brass ensembles include the Brass Choir, Horn Ensemble, Trumpet Ensemble, Trombone Choir, Trombone Ensemble, and Tuba and Euphonium Ensemble. Repertoire is selected from six centuries of musical resources including transcriptions and original compositions. The performance will be streamed live at stream.luther.edu/music.
Varsity Band and Wind and Percussion Ensemble Concert Nov. 10
Featuring a repertoire of classical compositions, the Luther Varsity Band and Luther's Wind and Percussion Ensemble will present a fall concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 10, in the Main Hall of the CFL. SAC Cinema Presents: Star Trek Beyond!
SAC Cinema with the Center for Ethics and Public Engagement invites the Luther community to a showing of Star Trek Beyond at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 11, in Valders 206. Doors open at 7 p.m. Cost is $5. Prior to the showing, a celebration of Star Trek's 50 anniversary will be held at 6 p.m. in Valders 206, and include a discussion on Star Trek's influence on the world by Luther faculty. Door prizes will be given.
Guest Recital: Thomas Lymenstull
Thomas Lymenstull will perform a guest recital at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11, in the NRH as part of the Dorian Keyboard Festival. Lymenstull serves as an instructor of piano at the Interlochen Arts Academy. He has traveled extensively through the People's Republic of China, meeting composers and researching music from China. Lymenstull will perform a Chinese piece along with works by Beethoven, Haydn, Liszt and Schumann.
In addition, Dorian Keyboard Festival top performers will be showcased in a recital at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, in the NRH.

Center Stage Series: Roseanne Cash
The critically acclaimed and versatile artist Rosanne Cash comes to Luther College to perform her newest album "The River and the Thread" as part of Luther's Center Stage Series at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, in the Main Hall of the CFL. Doors open at 7 p.m. The singer-songwriter's album has been hailed by USA Today as "a captivating and sometimes haunting album that's among the finest of her career." Tickets are available at tickets.luther.edu.
'Europa Afflicta: Personal Observations on the Mood in Europe'
After extensive travels during spring and summer 2016, Luther College Professors Robert and Victoria Christman gained important personal insights into the views of everyday Europeans during a turbulent political time. The professors will give a lecture reflecting on their experience titled, "Europa Afflicta: Personal Observations on the Mood in Europe" at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, in the Shirley Baker Commons.
Ensemble performance: Luther College Symphony Orchestra

Reunion Film and Peace Building
Nobel Peace Prize nominee Steinar Bryn and Associate Officer Anatolii Kyryliuk from the Nansen Center for Peace and Dialog have spent years educating students and politicians on their methodology of peace dialogue. From 6:30-8:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 13, they will screen the film "Reunion," and host a discussion of peacemaking in the modern world in Olin Room 102. Sponsored by the Center for Ethics and Public Engagement, the Dean's office, and the U.S. Embassy in Oslo.
Ensemble performance: Luther College Jazz Band
The Luther College Jazz Band will present a concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 15, in Luther's CFL Main Hall. Also performing in the concert is the Luther College Supersax Ensemble featuring Luther students and professors. SAC Cinema: Crossing Borders
SAC Cinema and International Student and Allies Association presents a showing of "Crossing Borders" at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 15, in Valders 206. There will be a discussion following the documentary. This event is part of the International Education Week celebration and it is open to the public with no charge for admission. "Crossing Borders" is a documentary that follows four Moroccan and four American university students as they travel together through Morocco. The documentary follows the students confront the complex implications of the supposed "clash of civilizations" between Islam and the West.
'Petra, Jordan, and Bedouins' Luther Women's Club Program
Luther College Women's Club meets at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 15 in Shirley Baker Commons. Jane Kemp, Luther professor emerita of Library and Information Studies and Marilyn Anderson, retired NICC communications instructor will present "Petra, Jordan, and Bedouins" a presentation about the rediscovered sandstone city of Petra, Jordan and the Bedouins - the nomadic people who live there.
Luther College Philharmonia concert
Luther College's Philharmonia orchestra will perform a concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17, in the CFL Main Hall. This event is open to the public with no charge for admission and will be streamed live at stream.luther.edu/music. The program features the following works: the first movement of Symphony No. 1 by Beethoven, "Five Courtly Dances from Gloriana" by Benjamin Britten and "A Shakespeare Suite: Film from Richard III" by William Walton.
'Who Do You Trust?' dance performance
Who do you trust and why do you trust them? The VPA department explores these questions through dance in their production of "Who Do You Trust?" Nov. 17-19 in the Jewel Theatre in the CFA. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17, 9:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 18, and 1:30 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19. The performance features nine unique and deeply evocative duets within a gallery exhibition format.
SAC Concerts host Parachute Nov. 19
Critically acclaimed pop rock band Parachute will perform at Luther College in the Regents Center Saturday, Nov. 19. Luther College Chamber Orchestra
Featuring a varied repertoire, the Luther College Chamber Orchestra will perform a concert at 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, in the Main Hall of the CFL. The Chamber Orchestra will perform Mozart's "Overture to La Clemenza di Tito," and Wagner's "Siegfried Idyll." The orchestra will also perform Haydn's "Cello Concerto in D major" which will feature Philip Borter, Luther assistant professor of music, on cello. 'Out of Darkness, Light!'
'Christmas at Luther' performances Dec. 1-4 In a musical celebration of joy, community and holiday traditions, Luther College will present the 2016 production of "Christmas at Luther" Dec. 1-4 in the CFL. The college is celebrating 35 years of this annual event. "Christmas at Luther" will have five performances. Tickets are still available for the 5:45 p.m. performance Thursday, Dec. 1 and the 9:15 p.m. performance Friday, Dec. 2. Tickets are available to the general public and may be purchased online here.

To the family of Kim Powell, Larry Sikkink and Senia Sikkink '18, on the death of Kim's mother, Madolyn Powell of Grantham, New Hampshire, on Oct. 8. A private remembrance was held Oct. 10.
ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS, ETC
A mixed-media work by David Kamm is included in a national juried art show titled "Artists United." The show is sponsored by the Charles Krause/Reporting Fine Arts Gallery and is currently on display at Busboys and Poets in Washington, D.C. Works in the show address the current state of the electoral process in America. Images of all of the pieces in the show along with several artists' statements can be found here.
Andy Hageman published the essay "Infrastructure and the Anthropocene in Tom McCarthy's 'Satin Island'" in the open-access journal Alluvium.
Laura Peterson is co-author of the study "Late Miocene global cooling and the rise of modern ecosystems," published in the journal Nature Geoscience. The study compiles past sea surface temperature data to provide strong evidence that a drop in atmospheric carbon dioxide levels was responsible for the development of the savannah and grassland ecosystems that were home to our early human ancestors.
Jim Martin-Schrammhas co-edited a collection of 16 essays published by Wipf & Stock titled "Eco-Reformation: Grace and Hope for a Planet in Peril." Wanda Deifelt's essay, "Out of Brokenness, a New Creation: Theology of the Cross and the Tree of Life" appears in the volume. Additionally, Jim's essay "Bonhoeffer, the Church, and the Climate Question" is included in the collection.
