ANNOUNCEMENTS

Message from President Carlson

After the recent election, we are reminded of our call as a community to engage in respectful dialogue, to learn from each other and to discern how we as individuals and as a community can serve with distinction for the common good.

Resources are available to assist Luther students, faculty and staff with questions or concerns that may arise as we engage in conversation about the election and reflect on how it affects our lives going forward.

  • Student Life Office, Dahl Centennial Union 266, 387-1020
  • Center for Ethics and Public Engagement, second floor of Koren, 387-1071
  • Dean's Office, Dahl Centennial Union 262, 387-1005
  • Human Resources, Main 25, 387-1134

At Luther, we are guided by our core values and commitments – to care for each other and the community, to act with integrity, to seek truth, to embrace diversity and to respect the dignity of each person. This is who we are as a community of faith and learning. Thank you for the many ways you enrich this community and share your Luther experience with the larger world.

- President Paula J. Carlson

Seeking DSA nominations

The Honorary Degrees Committee seeks Distinguished Service Award nominations for 2017 and beyond. Any member of the Luther faculty, staff or emeriti can recommend a name for consideration. Department heads are encouraged to discuss nominees within departments. Nominations should be accompanied by as much documentation as is available and sent to the Office of the President, Attention: Suzanne Lyndon.

Distinguished Service Awards are given each fall at Homecoming. Alumni who are selected generally receive the award during an anniversary year of their graduation. For the fall of 2017, the committee seeks nominees from classes ending in 7 or 2 who have graduated at least 20 years ago. Luther's online alumni directory can be a useful tool. Use the advanced search feature to sort by class year and major: https://www2.luther.edu/alumni/directory/index.php.

Distinguished Service Award criteria:

1. Meritorious service in one's profession, society, church or community
2. Loyalty and service to Luther College
3. Fidelity to the ideals of Luther College
4. Timeliness of the award (during their reunion year)

Please think ahead as much as five years as nominees might be especially appropriate for an upcoming campus event, the anniversary of a campus program or some other significant occasion.

Thanks for helping identify deserving candidates for recognition.

Safety Pins

When the United Kingdom voted for Brexit, many immigrants and refugees experienced harassment and fear. The idea of wearing a safety pin caught on as a way to identify oneself as an ally to others around them. The US has taken up this idea to help those who feel scared or nervous identify who is an ally. The Diversity Center has safety pins on hand for those who want to identify as an ally. Here’s the article from the Huffington Post for more information.

Escalation Workshop

The Escalation Workshop from the One Love Foundation is a 90-minute workshop designed to help spread knowledge and awareness about the consequences of relationship violence. The presentation consists of a film followed by a discussion and action planning. Those interested in hosting the workshop during class or another time may email <counseling>. The One Love Foundation was formed in honor of Yeardley Love who was murdered by her ex-boyfriend.

Reusing paper

The Document Center requests that going forward departments not to re-run paper that has previously been printed on one side through their printers or copiers. Similarly, do not re-use partially used label sheets. These materials change the first time they go through your copiers and printers and they can cause damage on the second pass. Dirt, oil and different toner types on the paper surface may cause damage to sensitive parts inside the machines and may end up costing more to fix than the savings of reusing the paper or the label pages in the machines.

Instead we are asking departments to collect and drop off or send through campus mail any paper that has previously been printed on one side to the Document Center. We will repurpose it as note/scratch pads. The pads will be available free to anyone who comes into the Document Center. We can provide a small box for collecting the paper in if needed. Partially used labels can be collected and sent to Mail Center where they will be reused to help label packages for pickup. Contact the Document Center, <naatje01>, with any questions.
