Campus closing early Nov. 23
We are pleased to announce that offices can close early and staff are permitted to leave work at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 23. Most non-exempt employees scheduled to work eight hours on Wednesday will work six hours and receive two hours of additional pay. Those employees who will have already worked their shift by 3 p.m. or those who must work their full shift because of the nature of their position will be given the option of taking two hours of paid time-off on a different day. If there are any questions, please contact your immediate supervisor or Human Resources.

Seeking DSA nominations
The Honorary Degrees Committee seeks Distinguished Service Award nominations for 2017 and beyond. Any member of the Luther faculty, staff or emeriti can recommend a name for consideration. Department heads are encouraged to discuss nominees within departments. Nominations should be accompanied by as much documentation as is available and sent to the Office of the President, Attention: Suzanne Lyndon.
Distinguished Service Awards are given each fall at Homecoming. Alumni who are selected generally receive the award during an anniversary year of their graduation. For the fall of 2017, the committee seeks nominees from classes ending in 7 or 2 who have graduated at least 20 years ago. Luther's online alumni directory can be a useful tool. Distinguished Service Award criteria:
1. Meritorious service in one's profession, society, church or community
2. Loyalty and service to Luther College
3. Fidelity to the ideals of Luther College
4. Timeliness of the award (during their reunion year)
Please think ahead as much as five years as nominees might be especially appropriate for an upcoming campus event, the anniversary of a campus program or some other significant occasion.

Christmas at Luther Parking Restrictions 2016
In order to accommodate the large number of visitors anticipated for Christmas at Luther the following parking restrictions will go into effect at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 30 and will remain in effect until 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 4.
The general parking areas of the Library, Jenson-Noble and City Pool lots will be reserved for visitors. Students should move their vehicles from these lots to either the Regents Center or Farwell lots. Faculty and staff may park in the Library and Sampson Hoffland lots provided they move by 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and 10 a.m. Sunday unless attending the performance.
Exception – vehicles displaying a Commuter sticker may park in the gravel City Pool lot provided they vacate the spaces before 4 p.m. Sunday.
The faculty/staff parking area by Valders will be reserved for those with disabled parking placards or plates. Alternative parking includes the roadway from Sampson Hoffland to the main gate, Regents Center and Farwell lots. Starting at 5 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 4, the lots on the east and west sides of the CFL will be designated for persons with disabled parking permits only.
The community's cooperation with these changes is appreciated. Vehicles found to be in violation of these special event restrictions are subject to fines. Any questions may be directed to Campus Safety and Security, 387-2111.
Save the date: Faculty/staff Christmas party Dec. 9
The Luther College Christmas party will be held from11:30 a.m.-2 p.m.Friday, Dec. 9, in Peace Dining Room. An e-invitation and RSVP will be distributed in early December.
Winter is coming
Facilities Services encourages the community to be cautious and to wear proper winter footwear when walking on campus sidewalks and streets once the snow arrives. As snow melts during the day and refreezes overnight, these areas can be slippery. Please be careful on the way to campus as well. As a reminder, please report a slippery area on campus by calling Facilities, 387-1146.
Safety pins available
When the United Kingdom voted for Brexit, many immigrants and refugees experienced harassment and fear. The idea of wearing a safety pin caught on as a way to identify oneself as an ally to others around them. The United States has taken up this idea to help those who feel scared or nervous identify who is an ally. The Diversity Center has safety pins on hand for those who want to identify as an ally. Fixit update
Effective Monday, Nov. 28 the Fixit ticket system will use the Norse Key username and password. The shortcut fixit.luther.edu will remain the same. Previous Fixit passwords will no longer be valid. New instructions are on the facilities website. Contact Facilities with questions, 387-1146.

Policy change to improve security of Luther email
The college is establishing a new policy in which Luther email accounts for students, faculty and staff will require Google 2-Step Verification. Faculty and staff must enable Google 2-Step Verification prior to Dec. 1 for all Luther email accounts in order to continue to successfully sign in. Students must enable Google 2-Step Verification prior to Feb. 1, 2017 for their Luther email accounts. Enable 2-Step Verification or attend a session for assistance. Luther alum and StoryPeople creator Brian Andreas will sign his new book, "Bring Your Life Back to Life: A Guide to Effortless Joy," from 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3.
Luther considers partnership with Decorah Community School District
Luther has entered into discussions with the Decorah Community School District about the possibility of locating an elementary school on a parcel of college land. The potential site is a part of the prairie at the northeast corner of College Drive and Ridge Road, across from the Decorah Municipal Swimming Pool.

On the alumni profiles page, which now has 61 stories, middle school choir director Stephen Dahle '13, talks about how Luther prepared him for the first steps in his profession. Seventh- and ninth-grade math teacher Anna Dieter '15 says the several teaching practicums offered throughout her four years at Luther gave her plenty of firsthand experience in the classroom.

Dakota Access Pipeline discussion panel
Luther students Rebecka Green and Courtney Field will lead a panel discussion on the Dakota Access Pipeline following their trip to Standing Rock Reservation in North Dakota. Sponsored by the Center for Ethics and Public Engagement in collaboration with the Northeast Iowa Peace and Justice Center, the discussion will take place at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29, in Valders 262. The event is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Guest lecture: 'The Lost and Found Women of the Reformation'
Women who supported and actively participated in the Reformation in the 16th century are rarely mentioned in history books. Anticipating the 500th anniversary of the Reformation in 2017 and offering an alternative, feminist perspective on the movement, Arnfríður Guðmundsdóttir will give a lecture titled "The Lost and Found Women of the Reformation" at 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 1, in Olin 102. She will also lead a brown bag lunch at 11:45 a.m., Friday, Dec. 2 in Borlaug. The lecture is sponsored by the Religion Department and Fine Arts committee.
Luther College second annual Norse Unity Bowl
Luther College will host the second annual Norse Unity Bowl at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3, to be held in multiple locations on campus and the Decorah community. Sponsored by Luther's Student Athlete Advisory Committee, the event brings together an afternoon of fun for Luther athletes and Special Olympics athletes. Register online before the event. 'Out of Darkness, Light!'
In a musical celebration of joy, community and holiday traditions, Luther College will present the 2016 production of "Christmas at Luther" Dec. 1-4 in the CFL. The college is celebrating 35 years of this annual event with five performances. Only a few tickets are available for the 9:15 p.m. performance Friday, Dec. 2 and may be purchased online here.
Luther to host 'Christmas in the Union' Dec. 7
Santa will make an early stop in Decorah as Luther College celebrates "Christmas in the Union" from 4:30-6:30 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 7, in the lobby of the Union. Activities include crafts, readings from children's holiday books, music and games. There will be an opportunity for pictures with Santa by the fireplace from 5-6:30 p.m. Cookies, hot chocolate and apple cider will be served. This family-oriented event is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Temporary music tours and Dorian coordinator: Luther College is currently accepting applications for a temporary music tours and Dorian coordinator. This is a 40-hour-per-week position that will last through approximately July 1, 2017, and will support the work of music ensemble tours and Dorian camps. High school diploma or equivalent is required. A bachelor's degree is preferred. Knowledge of computer database and word processing necessary. Knowledge of and experience with both choral and instrumental music very helpful.

J. R. Christianson lectured on the instruments of the Renaissance astronomer, Tycho Brahe, in the historic Auditorium A of the Niels Bohr Institute at Copenhagen University Nov. 9.
Thomas C. Johnson's article, "Producing, Distributing, and Teaching 'Ironhead'" appears in the October 2016 issue of "Journal of Media Education."
Andy Hageman published his critical pedagogy piece that draws upon his Jterm course, Ecomedia, "When EcoMedia Gets Weird: Björk—Timothy Morton—Anthropocene" in Teaching Media Quarterly.
Oyvind T. Gulliksen has an essay on literary history and postage stamps in the December issue of "The Norwegian Journal of Philatelics." His essay on Norwegian-American literature and "poetic ethnicity" has just been published in the fall issue of Telesoga.
Iowa Public Television and the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs announced the selection of 13 independent short films by Iowa artists for the upcoming program, "The Film Lounge," including films from Luther's own Thomas C. Johnson, Neal Abbott '15, and Ian Carstens '14. The films will air during two one-hour episodes in February 2017. More information on the program can be found on the IPTV website.
