Faculty/staff Christmas party Dec. 9

President Carlson and Dr. Thomas Schattauer invite all faculty and staff to the Faculty and Staff Christmas Party, held 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 9, in Peace Dining Room. Come share good cheer and luncheon fare with Luther friends and colleagues. Seating will be available throughout the second floor of Dahl Centennial Union. Please RSVP by Thursday, Dec. 1.

Strategic planning open forums Dec. 5-6

The Strategic Planning Committee invites and encourages all faculty, staff and students to participate in strategic planning open forums Dec. 5-6 in Peace Dining Room. The purpose of these discussions is to invite conversation, to listen to ideas and to begin to discuss potential areas of priority for the college's new strategic plan.

Staff forums: 12:15-1:15 p.m. and 4-5 p.m. Monday, Dec. 5
Student forums: 9:40-10:40 a.m. and 6:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 6
Faculty forums: 11 a.m.-noon and 4:15-5:15 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 6

The ideas, suggestions and comments that emerge from these discussions will be incorporated into a document that will be posted for review by the campus community in January.

Strategic planning idea wall Dec. 6

In addition to the strategic planning open forums, all students, faculty and staff are invited to participate in an Idea Wall from noon-4 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 6, on the first floor of Dahl Centennial Union. The Idea Wall is a public activity through which passersby can write comments and suggestions for the college's new strategic plan.

Christmas at Luther parking restrictions 2016

In order to accommodate the large number of visitors anticipated for Christmas at Luther the following parking restrictions will go into effect at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 30 and will remain in effect until4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 4.

The general parking areas of the Library, Jenson-Noble and City Pool lots will be reserved for visitors. Students should move their vehicles from these lots to either the Regents Center or Farwell lots. Faculty and staff may park in the Library and Sampson Hoffland lots provided they move by 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and 10 a.m. Sunday unless attending the performance. 

Exception – vehicles displaying a Commuter sticker may park in the gravel City Pool lot provided they vacate the spaces before 4 p.m. each day (Wednesday-Saturday).

The faculty/staff parking area by Valders will be reserved for those with disabled parking placards or plates. Alternative parking includes the roadway from Sampson Hoffland to the main gate, Regents Center and Farwell lots. Starting at 5 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 4, the lots on the east and west sides of the CFL will be designated for persons with disabled parking permits only.

The community's cooperation with these changes is appreciated. Vehicles found to be in violation of these special event restrictions are subject to fines.  Any questions may be directed to Campus Safety and Security, 387-2111.

Staff meeting Christmas party

The December staff meeting will be a Christmas party held at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7, in Peace Dining Room. This year's theme is "Holiday Game Night." Staff are invited to bring a monetary donation for the First Lutheran Church Food Pantry, as cash gifts allow the Pantry to purchase in bulk. 

Winter is coming

Facilities Services encourages the community to be cautious and to wear proper winter footwear when walking on campus sidewalks and streets once the snow arrives. As snow melts during the day and refreezes overnight, these areas can be slippery. Please be careful on the way to campus as well. As a reminder, please report a slippery area on campus by calling Facilities, 387-1146.

Changes to improve security on your Luther workstation 

ITS will roll out changes to Luther-owned workstations beginning Tuesday, Nov. 29, in order to improve security. They include 1) Installing an OpenDNS Umbrella Client and 2) Disabling Autorun. These changes will happen in the background and no action is needed on the part of faculty and staff. For details, see Changes to Improve Security on Your Luther Workstation.

Faculty and staff PaperCut transition

Faculty and staff workstations will be transitioned to PaperCut beginning Tuesday, Dec. 6. Starting that Tuesday, color jobs will be printed differently. For more details, see Faculty & Staff PaperCut Transition.

Fixit update

Effective Monday, Nov. 28 the Fixit ticket system will use the Norse Key username and password. The shortcut fixit.luther.edu will remain the same. Previous Fixit passwords will no longer be valid. New instructions are on the facilities website. Contact Facilities with questions, 387-1146.

Upcoming events

Harley Refsal, Luther professor emeritus and James Miller, current Luther student, will give wood carving demonstrations in the Book Shop 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3, and noon-1:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 4. They have created a limited edition Luther wood carving figurine.

Luther alumnus and StoryPeople creator Brian Andreas will sign his new book, "Bring Your Life Back to Life: A Guide to Effortless Joy," from 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3.

Luther considers partnership with Decorah Community School District

Luther has entered into discussions with the Decorah Community School District about the possibility of building an elementary school on a parcel of college land. The potential site is a part of the prairie at the northeast corner of College Drive and Ridge Road, across from the Decorah Municipal Swimming Pool.

Not Quite Free Lunch for employees

Tuesday, Dec. 6, join Wellness for the monthly NQFL for Luther employees sponsored by Wellness. Boost social and emotional wellness by getting away from the typical work space and mingling with folks from across campus. Come enjoy a meal anytime  11:30 a.m.-1:15 p.m. in the Nobel Room. Dakota Access Pipeline discussion panel

Luther students Rebecka Green and Courtney Field will lead a panel discussion on the Dakota Access Pipeline following their trip to Standing Rock Reservation in North Dakota. Sponsored by the Center for Ethics and Public Engagement in collaboration with the Northeast Iowa Peace and Justice Center, the discussion will take place at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29, in Valders 262. The event is open to the public with no charge for admission.

'The Lost and Found Women of the Reformation'

Women who supported and actively participated in the Reformation in the 16th century are rarely mentioned in history books. Anticipating the 500th anniversary of the Reformation in 2017 and offering an alternative, feminist perspective on the movement, Arnfríður Guðmundsdóttir will give a lecture titled "The Lost and Found Women of the Reformation" at 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 1, in Olin 102. She will also lead a brown bag lunch at 11:45 a.m., Friday, Dec. 2 in Borlaug. The lecture is sponsored by the Religion Department and Fine Arts committee.

Luther College second annual Norse Unity Bowl

Luther College will host the second annual Norse Unity Bowl at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3, to be held in multiple locations on campus and the Decorah community. Sponsored by Luther's Student Athlete Advisory Committee, the event brings together an afternoon of fun for Luther athletes and Special Olympics athletes. Register online before the event. 'Out of Darkness, Light!'

In a musical celebration of joy, community and holiday traditions, Luther College will present the 2016 production of "Christmas at Luther" Dec. 1-4 in the CFL. The college is celebrating 35 years of this annual event with five performances. Only a few tickets are available for the 9:15 p.m. performance Friday, Dec. 2. Tickets may be purchased online here.

Luther to host 'Christmas in the Union' Dec. 7

Santa will make an early stop in Decorah as Luther College celebrates "Christmas in the Union" from 4:30-6:30 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 7, in the lobby of the Union. Activities include crafts, readings from children's holiday books, music and games. There will be an opportunity for pictures with Santa by the fireplace from 5-6:30 p.m. Cookies, hot chocolate and apple cider will be served. This family-oriented event is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Winter wellness fair

Wellness will sponsor the Winter Wellness Fair from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 8 in the Williams Lounge. The fair will include chair massages, a fire extinguisher demonstration, nutritional tips, a prayer labyrinth, office wellness kits, winter driving survival tips and more. The event is sponsored by Wellness, Security, Campus Ministries, Counseling Services, the Nursing Department and Sustainability. It is open to Luther employees with no charge to attend.

Luther Emeriti Colloquia: 'Christmas in a World at War' Dec. 8

Professor Emeritus of History Marv Slind will deliver a lecture titled, "Christmas in a World at War." He will use selections from World War II letters to illustrate the experiences that many men and women had during the holiday seasons in the midst of war. Slind's presentation is at 3 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 8, in the Mott Room and is open to the public with no charge for admission.

This is a 40-hour-per-week position that will last through approximately July 1, 2017, and will support the work of music ensemble tours and Dorian camps. Andy Hageman presented as part of the Global Weirding round-table at the annual Society for Science, Literature and the Arts (SLSA) the first week of November in Atlanta. The round-table was made up of contributors to and the co-editors (Hageman and Gerry Canavan) of the 2016 issue of Paradoxa.

Leave a few extra minutes before Saturday's Christmas at Luther concert to drive through the luminaries on Ridge Road and its adjoining streets. Candles will be lit 5-10 p.m. Dec. 3-4. This year is the 28th year of this holiday tradition.
