Rob Larson to conclude his service as vice president

After nine years as vice president for communications and marketing, Rob Larson will conclude his service as vice president and return to the economics and business department in fall 2017. Rob has been a member of the economics and business faculty since 2003 and was granted tenure in 2007. He has continued to teach first-year Scholars Colloquium courses throughout his time as vice president.

Rob is Luther’s first vice president for communications and marketing and was responsible for coordinating six departments into an integrated communications and marketing division. Notable achievements under his leadership include the growth of athletic event streaming and the introduction of music streaming and the design and implementation of a new web content management system. Many thanks to Rob for his dedicated service as vice president and for the contributions he has made to advancing communications and marketing at Luther College.

The search for Rob's successor will be undertaken during second semester.

COLLEGE OPERATIONS

Early biweekly deadline Dec. 15

Due to the Christmas and New Year's holiday, employees need to submit their Web Time entry to their supervisor by noon by Thursday, Dec. 15. Supervisors have until noon on Friday, Dec. 16 to approve time cards. This early deadline is so that biweekly employees can be paid ahead of the holiday. Instead of being paid on Wednesday, Dec. 28, biweekly employees will be paid Friday, Dec. 23. Employees will be paid for the full Dec. 3-16 pay period, but they will be paid five days early. Because employees must submit their times before the end of the week, they will need to estimate their hours for Dec. 15-16.

Farwell elevator unavailable during Christmas break

A reminder to faculty and staff that use the Farwell elevator: winter break means the residence halls will be closed. Starting at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 15, Farwell Hall will be locked. The hall will reopen at 10 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 1. Staff and faculty should take note that these hours include the use of the Farwell elevator.

Snow removal parking

Faculty and staff planning to leave vehicles on campus overnight during Christmas break should park in one of the following areas: Regents Center lot (east side closest to the Towers, first three single rows) or the Decorah outdoor swimming pool lot. Parking in any other lot on campus may result in the car being towed at the owner's expense, $100 minimum. Cars left over J-term must be parked in the City of Decorah outdoor swimming pool parking lot. Contact <facilities> with any questions.

Peace Scholar applications due Jan. 30

Encourage sophomores and juniors interested in studying in Norway this summer to apply to the Peace Scholars program. An outgrowth of the Nobel Peace Prize Forum, this scholarship provides funding for two students to study for a week at the Nansen Center for Peace and Dialogue in Lillehammer, and then for six weeks at the University of Oslo. Minneapolis Institute of Art Exhibit sponsored trip

In honor of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, the Minneapolis Institute of Art is hosting an exhibition of Reformation art and artifacts on loan from Germany. On Friday, Jan. 6, the College will sponsor a trip to the MIA open to all students. The price is $10 and includes transportation, entrance fee and dinner, and an opportunity to mingle with Luther College alumni. Encourage students to sign up by emailing Kate Elliott at <ellika03>.

Wellness book club

The next book sponsored by Wellness is "Are We Born Racist? New Insights from Neuroscience and Positive Psychology," cosponsored by the Diversity Center. Email <wellness> if you would like to join us in reading. Some copies will be available to check out before the holidays on a first-come-first-serve basis and for purchase in the bookstore. A time to talk about the book will be scheduled in early February according to people's schedules.

Rechargeable batteries and cellphone recycling information

 

Effective Dec. 1 under the Rechargeable Batteries and Cellphones Resolution Winneshiek County Solid Waste Agency will not accept rechargeable and cellular telephones in the Winneshiek County Landfill. Luther College's Center for Sustainable Communities has partnered with Call2Recycle which provides free battery and cellphone recycling in North America. Information on accepted items and locations of receptacles can be found on the Luther College Recycling website.

Document Center notice

In the past year there have been several attempts by telemarketers to solicit for toner supply orders to Luther. Supplies are available for Ricoh printers or copiers through the Document Center as part of Luther's service contract. The Document Center wants to remind faculty and staff that Ricoh will not call to solicit for toner. Do not give any information to the callers, instead tell them to not call again and hang up the call. Contact the Document Center with questions <doccenter>.

Faculty and staff PaperCut transition

Faculty and staff workstations are in the process of being transitioned to PaperCut. Color jobs will now be printed differently. For more details, see Faculty and Staff PaperCut Transition.

Baseball holiday camp

The baseball program is hosting their annual holiday camp for third-sixth graders from 9 a.m.-noon Friday, Dec. 30. Contact Nick Soldano, (847)347-2949 or <soldni01> with questions.

Soccer clinic

The Luther College men's and women's soccer programs will offer a winter skills clinic for students kindergarten-eighth grade from 4-6:15 p.m. on Saturdays Jan. 8 and Jan. 22. The two-day clinic will be held in the Student Recreation Center of the Regents Center. All registrations must be made online by Jan. 2. Contact Chris with questions, <garcch01>.

Caution on Dike Road

Terracon, a geotechnical engineering firm, will be working along Dike Road, Pole Line Road, and the berm starting Tuesday, Dec. 13. The Luther community is asked to please allow ample space so they have a safe working environment. Terracon will be using Electrical Resistivity Imaging to determine where to conduct soil borings. All in preparation to determine the existing soil conditions of Dike Road and measures needed to be accredited. Information is needed to compare to FEMA criteria for flood protection.

Norma Hervey joined the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Czech Fulbright program in New York City Nov. 5. Due to an unexpected health problem, she was unable to present the paper expected in Washington for the annual Fulbright meeting. She continues to serve as a peer reviewer.

Dean Vesperman presented at the College and University Faculty Assembly of the National Council for the Social Studies Primary contradictions and the ontogenetic evolution of preservice teachers' conceptions of democracy. He also conducted two professional development presentations at NCSS on Game theory; "An Analytical Tool for the Social Studies Classroom" with Chris Clark of the University of Minnesota and "Right to Protect: How to Teach About Human Rights in the 21st Century."

Luther College student, Mwayi Pankuku will host an informational session and fundraising event on her Sanitation and Clean Water Project for girls' empowerment in Malawi. Sponsored by the Center for Global Learning and Northeast Iowa Peace and Justice Center, the event will be at 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 15, at the Peace and Justice Center, 119 Winnebago Street, Decorah.
