Christmas and New Year's holidays

The college will be closed Monday-Friday, Dec. 26-30. Enjoy the Christmas and New Year's holidays.

Tuesday, Dec. 27 deadline

Though the Media Relations office will be closed for the Christmas and New Year's holiday, the Tuesday may still be distributed on Tuesday, Dec. 27. Please note that while the regular deadline for the Tuesday is 3 p.m. the previous Friday, the deadline for the Dec. 27 edition of the Tuesday will be at noon Friday, Dec. 23.

The Christmas staff meeting committee sends a big "thank you" for the generous donations to the Community Food Pantry at First Lutheran Church. Luther staff donated $271 at the Dec. 7 staff Christmas party.

Farwell elevator unavailable during Christmas break

A reminder to faculty and staff that use the Farwell elevator: winter break means the residence halls will be closed. Farwell Hall is now closed. The hall will reopen at 10 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 1. Staff and faculty should take note that these hours include the use of the Farwell elevator.

Snow removal parking

Faculty and staff planning to leave vehicles on campus overnight during Christmas break should park in one of the following areas: Regents Center lot (east side closest to the Towers, first three single rows) or the Decorah outdoor swimming pool lot. Parking in any other lot on campus may result in the car being towed at the owner's expense, $100 minimum. Cars left over J-term must be parked in the City of Decorah outdoor swimming pool parking lot. Contact <facilities> with any questions.

'Christmas at Luther' performances to be broadcast online and via regional public radio

 

The college will offer a streamed version of the "Christmas at Luther: Out of Darkness, Light!" Dec. 16-Jan. 1, 2017, available at christmasatluther.com/stream. There is no charge to view or download the performance.

The performance will be broadcast via Iowa Public Radio at 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 18; 11 a.m., Saturday Dec. 24; and 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 25. Listeners can find a local station online at iowapublicradio.org/find-station - stream/0.

Additionally, Christmas at Luther will be broadcast via Classical Minnesota Public Radio at 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 22. Listeners can stream online and find their local station at classicalmpr.org.

Next Steps: Experiential Learning

Encourage first-year and sophomore students to attend "Next Steps: Experiential Learning" 1-3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 31, in Valders Hall of Science. Students will learn more about study abroad, internship and research opportunities at Luther. The event includes the January Term 2018 course reveal, a $500 prize and features Luther alumni Rachel Barclay, Donald Lee-Brown and Gabe Saemisch leading breakout sessions. Peace Scholar applications due Jan. 30

Encourage sophomores and juniors interested in studying in Norway this summer to apply to the Peace Scholars program. An outgrowth of the Nobel Peace Prize Forum, this scholarship provides funding for two students to study for a week at the Nansen Center for Peace and Dialogue in Lillehammer, and then for six weeks at the University of Oslo. Minneapolis Institute of Art Exhibit sponsored trip

In honor of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, the Minneapolis Institute of Art is hosting an exhibition of Reformation art and artifacts on loan from Germany. On Friday, Jan. 6, the college will sponsor a trip to the MIA open to all students. Witty Words

Looking for a fun reason to work out in January? Join Witty Words, the January Wellness initiative. The game is played like Wheel of Fortune. During the entire month of January, there will be several word puzzles to be solved. Working out 30-60 minutes earns players chances to solve the puzzles. To sign up, email <wellness>.

Wellness book club

The next book sponsored by Wellness is "Are We Born Racist? New Insights from Neuroscience and Positive Psychology," cosponsored by the Diversity Center. Contact <wellness> if you would like to join us in reading. Some copies will be available to check out before the holidays on a first-come-first-serve basis and for purchase in the bookstore. A time to talk about the book will be scheduled in early February according to participants' schedules.

Rechargeable batteries and cellphone recycling information

 

Effective Dec. 1 under the Rechargeable Batteries and Cellphones Resolution Winneshiek County Solid Waste Agency will not accept rechargeable and cellular telephones in the Winneshiek County Landfill. Luther's Center for Sustainable Communities has partnered with Call2Recycle which provides free battery and cellphone recycling in North America. Information on accepted items and locations of receptacles can be found on the Luther College Recycling website.

Soccer clinic

The Luther College men's and women's soccer programs will offer a winter skills clinic for students kindergarten-eighth grade from 4-6:15 p.m. on Saturdays Jan. 8 and Jan. 22. The two-day clinic will be held in the Student Recreation Center of the Regents Center. All registrations must be made online by Jan. 2. Contact Chris with questions, <garcch01>.

Caution on Dike Road

Terracon, a geotechnical engineering firm, will be working along Dike Road, Pole Line Road, and the berm starting Tuesday, Dec. 13. The community is asked to please allow ample space so they have a safe working environment. Terracon will use Electrical Resistivity Imaging to determine where to conduct soil borings. All in preparation to determine the existing soil conditions of Dike Road and measures needed to be accredited. Information is needed to compare to the Federal Emergency Management Agency criteria for flood protection.

Luther's Christmas Cheer organized gifts for local families

Luther College's Student Activities Council Service Committee, or SAC Service, hosted Christmas Cheer collection day Dec. 6 collecting Christmas presents for 43 local families. Christmas Cheer groups brought their gifts to Marty's in Dahl Centennial Union at Luther, which were then wrapped and taken to a local church for registered families to pick up. New at Luther.edu

Features about Ron Ferguson, assistant professor of sociology, and Kyle Fey, assistant professor of mathematics, have joined the 24 other articles on the Faculty Stories page. Ferguson talks about his research interests, including looking at social factors and how they relate to the success of African-American students in the field of biology. Fey also links his discipline to biology. "At Luther, I've transitioned to mainly working on problems that have applications in biology. But what has stayed constant is my desire to use math to have a better understanding of the world around us," he says.

Also, social work major Adam Morgan '17, talks about his experience as a transfer student. "Transferring from a community college, I was nervous coming to Luther. The experiences I've had here make me certain that my decision to transfer was the right one," he says.

Job postings

Regional admissions counselor or assistant director of admissions  - Colorado: This position will be responsible for recruitment of students from Colorado, California and the western United States geographic area. This position will physically be located in the greater Denver area, with the candidate working from a home office. Duties will also include interviewing prospective students when on campus and assisting with other admissions-related activities/events as assigned. Extensive travel is required, and candidates must be able to work evenings and weekends when appropriate. Title will be based on the level of experience for the successful candidate.

Food and Farm fellow: The Center for Sustainable Communities is hiring a Food and Farm fellow for a 10 month, full-time, 40-hour/week position for Feb. 1-Nov. 30, 2017. Fellow is responsible for day-to-day operations at the college farm, including student supervision, management of the community garden and carrying out plans for the 2017 season. Additional responsibilities include marketing and communication, coordinating volunteer opportunities and tours, managing logistics for the Cafeteria to Community Program, implementing composting initiatives and coordinating food education classes. Qualified candidates must have a bachelor of arts or bachelor of science degree, at least one year relevant work experience and a passion for sustainable agriculture and food systems.  

Short-term Campus Programming Technician: This is a 40-hour per week position lasting approximately 18 months. The Campus Programming Technician offers technical support, collaborative planning with the Head Campus Programming Technician and quality customer service for all events in the CFL. Bachelor's or Associates Degree preferred. At least two years of experience working with audio systems and/or theatrical lighting; including design, set up, focusing and repair and multi-media resources as well as experience or skill in leadership, analytical problem solving skills, the ability to work independently and with a team required.
