Sign up today for 2018 required wellness screenings
During 2018, employees and spouses covered by the Luther College Health Care Plan have additional wellness benefits and requirements. Get started early to avoid an additional insurance premium by visiting the informational website and learning how to sign up for the first on-campus blood screening, scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 16. 'Christmas at Luther' stream now available
Luther is offering a streamed version of the 2017 performance of "Christmas at Luther: The Tree of Life My Soul Hath Seen" online through January. The college's annual musical celebration is available at christmasatluther.com/stream; there is no charge to view or download the performance.
Sisk named volleyball coach
Renae Hartl has named Brittany Sisk the college's new head volleyball coach. Sisk joins the Norse with a wealth of experience as a head coach and assistant coach at both the NCAA III and NCAA II levels. She will begin her new duties immediately. Sisk becomes the sixth head coach in Luther's 39-year history of varsity volleyball. She succeeds Danielle Lynch, who served as head volleyball coach for seven years and resigned in November.
Hafner resigns, Padilla named head football coach
Renae Hartl has announced that Aaron Hafner, head football coach, has resigned. "It was a tough decision to leave Luther College, but my family and I have an opportunity to teach and coach in the Kansas City, Kansas area and continue our journey closer to our immediate family," stated Hafner.
Caleb Padilla, who has been the defensive coordinator for the Norse football program the past three years, has been promoted to head football coach. "I look forward to building on the football program created under the leadership of coach Hafner," commented Padilla. During his three years at Luther, the defensive unit has improved each year. In 2017, the Norse recorded their highest Iowa Conference finish in scoring defense in nine years.
KATIE version update on Jan. 3
There will be a small upgrade to KATIE Wednesday, Jan. 3. All work will carry over. KATIE will be unavailable noon-5 p.m. that day. This upgrade will reintroduce the popular document converter that allows instructors to view and annotate assignments within KATIE. January tennis camp
The Luther tennis program is hosting a January tennis camp for any seventh through 12th grade netter. Camp is 4-6 p.m. Saturdays, Jan. 13, 20 and 27, in the Student Recreation Center. Players need to be equipped for high school/college-style practice. Cost is $50. Please bring payment and a signed liability form to the first clinic. Register by Jan. 3 with the names and grades of participants by emailing Miriam, <mbskrade>.
Winter Sports Performance Clinics start Jan. 4
Luther College Sports Performance is now taking registrations for the 2018 Winter Sports Performance Clinics. Clinic sessions are in Regents Center. Clinics run weekly from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Monday and Thursday, Jan. 4 through May, for grades 6-12. Clinic cost is $100/month for two days/week or $15 a session. Nottingham and Malta directors named
The Dean's Office and the Center for Global Learning are pleased to announce the appointment of Kate Narveson as the 2019-20 Nottingham Program Director and the appointment of Brooke Joyce as the 2019 Malta Program Director. We are grateful to both individuals for providing leadership to these two important and longstanding off-campus programs.
'Laton Alton Huffman, Frontier Photographer'
Captured images of the American West during the 19th and 20th centuries will be on display Jan. 5-31 in Preus Library. The show, titled "Laton Alton Huffman, Frontier Photographer," features vintage photographs taken by Laton Alton Huffman. An opening reception, including a brief program on Huffman's life, is 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 5, in the Hovde Room in Preus. The reception and gallery exhibit are open to the public with no charge for admission.
'The National Parks' screenings in January
Celebrating the beauty of the great outdoors and national spaces in the United States, a six-part screening of Ken Burns' documentary "The National Parks: America's Best Idea," is scheduled throughout January at Luther in Valders 362. Screenings are:
Check out Scandinavian crime films this winter and spring
Vesterheim, the national Norwegian-American museum and heritage center, and Luther's Nordic Studies Program are showing free Scandinavian crime films the second Tuesday of the month from January through April. The first film will be the Norwegian version of "Insomnia" (R) 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9, in the first floor gallery of the museum's Main Building. Other films include "Wallander" Feb. 13; "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" March 13 and "Occupied" April 10.
Employee wellness J-term and spring first session fitness class registration
Registration is open for new four-week session J-term classes and the first six-week session spring classes of wellness-subsidized employee yoga, pilates, and Tai Chi. Details and the registration form are available on the online fitness class site. Classes are open to current employees and their spouses. Email <wellness> with questions.

Nordic Choir Midwest and Colorado tour ends in Decorah
Luther's Nordic Choir, one of the top college choirs in the nation, closes its Midwest and Colorado tour with a homecoming performance at the CFL at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 13. The performance by the 73-member Nordic Choir is open to the public with no charge for admission. The concert is part of Nordic Choir's 2018 tour of the Midwest and Colorado, which begins Jan. 27 in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin and concludes in Decorah Feb. 13.
Farwell elevator unavailable during Christmas break
A reminder to faculty and staff who use the Farwell elevator, winter break means the residence halls will be closed. Farwell Hall is locked, and will reopen at noon Saturday, Jan. 6.

'Inception' screening Jan. 12
SAC Cinema presents "Inception" 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 12, in Marty's. The movie follows a thief who uses dream-sharing technology to steal secrets. His biggest task is to go into the mind of a CEO and plant an idea. Doors open at 7 p.m. Admission is $5. Free popcorn while it lasts.

To the family and friends of Dr. Roger W. Anderson, who died Tuesday, Dec. 26, in Janesville, Wisconsin. Anderson earned a Bachelor of Arts in social science from Luther in 1948. He returned to Luther in 1958 to become an assistant professor of education. He was Luther's head of education from 1964-1985 and was the registrar and assistant dean to the college from 1985 until he retired in 1989. A memorial service will be held in late spring or summer at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Memorials may be made to the Dr. Roger and Amme Anderson Endowned Scholarship at Luther, c/o Development Office. Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah is in charge of arrangements.
