Information and update on weekend incident

Following the hate incident over the weekend when the symbols "KKK" and a swastika were stomped into the snow on the football field, the college held a "Litany of Solidarity" and a college conversation. The campus community received three emails regarding this incident; the full email messages are available at http://luther.edu/president/speeches.

The president would like to invite students, faculty and staff to participate in follow-up community conversations, including suggestions for next steps, with members of Luther's College Ministries, Counseling Service, Diversity Center and President's office on Wednesday, March 14, in the Mott Room in Dahl Centennial Union, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 5:30 to 7 p.m.

Cabinet will review the feedback from all the conversations and identify the priority actions the college must take to address the concerns and issues raised.

Campus Safety and Security is actively investigating every lead regarding the hate symbols. We strongly encourage you to share any information you have–nothing is too minor to share. If you have any information, please call Campus Safety and Security at 387-2111. You may also report using the bias incident report form on the website. Seeking Building Marshal volunteers

The Emergency Response Team is seeking volunteers to serve as Building Marshals in non-residential campus buildings. Building Marshals are current members of the faculty and/or staff who agree to assist during safety related events within their building. They might assist with the evacuation of buildings during fire alarms, help with the implementation of emergency procedures or serve as a first point of contact in an emergency if Campus Safety and Security is not readily available. Those who volunteer for the program should have a work schedule that places them in their respective areas when the building has the heaviest use. Fill out this form if you are willing to volunteer to be a Building Marshal.

Duval and Shutts join Board of Regents

Luther President Paula Carlson announced that alumnae Shannon Duval and Anjela Shutts will join Luther's Board of Regents. "We are excited to welcome Shannon Duval and Anjela Shutts to the Board of Regents," said President Carlson. "These are two dedicated alumnae who have been actively involved in serving the college and will continue to do so with energy, commitment and wisdom as regents of the college."

Armed intruder training today

Members of the Luther community are invited to attend an armed intruder training Tuesday, March 13, in Olin 102. Sessions are 4-5 p.m. and 6-7 p.m. The training will focus on the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's "Run, Hide, Fight" model. Bob Harri, Luther director of safety and security, and Kris Franzen, assistant dean for student life, will lead the training.

Federal Income Tax withholding form update

The IRS released the 2018 Form W-4 and an updated Withholding Calculator to help employees determine proper withholding amounts. Completed 2017 tax returns and year-to-date 2018 pay advices from my.luther may be helpful for employees using the Withholding Calculator. The IRS is urging the following taxpayer groups to check their withholding and, if necessary, complete a new W-4:

• Two-income families.
• Those with two or more jobs at the same time or who only work part of the year.
• Those with children who claim credits such as the Child Tax Credit.
• Those who itemized deductions in 2017.
• Those with high incomes and more complex tax returns.

Questions about 2018 federal income tax withholding may be answered by the IRS Withholding Calculator Frequently Asked Questions list. Updated W-4 forms, if necessary, should be submitted to the Payroll Office, 387-1135.

The March staff meetings are this week in Peace Dining Room: 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 14, and 9 a.m. Thursday, March 15.

Individual TIAA counseling sessions March 28-29

TIAA announces individual counseling sessions: 8:30 a.m.-4:15 p.m., Wednesday and Thursday, March 28-29. Space is limited. Register online or by calling (800) 732-8353 between 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday-Friday. Sessions will be held Main 30.

Changes to HSA contributions

The 2018 contribution limit for health savings accounts linked to family coverage will be $6,850—not $6,900, as the IRS previously announced. The IRS recalculated the limit because the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act that passed at the end of 2017 applies the so-called chained consumer price index to increases in HSA and a few other employee benefit contribution limits. The IRS released this notice March 5. Please contact HR/Payroll if an adjustment to HSA payroll deductions is needed.

Krahn Family Student Life Service Award

Nominations for the Krahn Family Student Life Service Award must be for current sophomore and junior students who have demonstrated a strong contribution to campus life in a way that embraces the spirit and mission of Luther College. Any student, faculty or staff member may nominate a student. This award is designed to recognize a student who makes a positive impact to student life. The $1,000 award is expected to be over and above any financial assistance a student receives. The nomination form can be found here. Nominations due by April 4.

Kuh Family 'Positively Luther' Award

The Kuh Family "Positively Luther" award is given each year to a student whose character, leadership and participation in co-curricular and other educationally purposeful activities enhance the quality of campus life. The recipient must be in good academic standing with a demonstrated need for financial assistance. This $5,000 award is expected to be over and above the financial aid package offered by the College. Students may apply for this award through April 4.

Faculty and staff appreciation day in the Caf

National school walkout March 14

Join Educators for Social Justice and Student Senate in walking out of class at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 14, to stand in solidarity with the 17 victims of the Parkland school shooting as part of the #Enough! National School Walkout. Students, faculty, staff and administrators are welcome to meet on the steps of the CFL to remember, reflect and respond to the gun violence that is plaguing our schools.

Have a random health or wellness question? Questions about the even year screenings or the results of a screening? Or just want to get to know wellness staff and the opportunities they offer? CEPE spring book groups, round 2

There are more conversations to be had with new book group offerings. Topics span religion, politics, the environment and more, with a few of the authors coming to campus (and a few groups meeting at Pulpit Rock). Books are provided. To learn more and to sign up, visit cepe.

Open forum for faculty and staff

The Shared Governance Task Force has been charged with identifying the strengths and weaknesses of Luther's current governance structure and proposing any necessary reforms. For the past few months, the group has been meeting with the committees involved in shared governance and now would like to meet with the broader faculty and staff. Faculty and staff are encouraged to attend one of the following three open forums, all of which will be held in Valders 262: 9:40-10:50 a.m. Tuesday, March 13; 9:40-10:50 a.m. Thursday, March 15; and 7-8:15 p.m. Thursday, March 15. There will also be an additional opportunity for faculty to discuss shared governance at the AAUP chapter meeting at 4 p.m. Friday in Preus Library Hovde Room.

Weight Watchers group on campus

Wellness is exploring the level of interest in bringing a Weight Watchers group to campus. If there was enough interest (15+ people), the group would consist of 13 meetings starting in April on campus. The cost of the program would be $156, and Wellness would reimburse $36 to each participant who completes the program. If you have questions or are interested in participating, email <wellness> by Friday, March 16.

Employee Wellness spring second session fitness class registration

Sign up for the second six-week session spring classes of wellness subsidized employee Fitness Classes. Details and the registration form are available on the online fitness class site. Classes are open to current employees and their spouses. Email <wellness> with any questions. 

Image Management Agreement with Ricoh

In an effort to seek college-wide cost savings and improve efficiencies, Luther is collaborating with Ricoh to change the way that we provide and maintain printers and copiers. We are moving to an Image Management Agreement. This means Ricoh will manage, assign and service all print devices across campus, and Luther will continue to pay Ricoh on a per-click basis. Sign up for a CSA rebate

Luther College faculty and staff are eligible for a 50 percent reimbursement (up to $100) on Community Supported Agriculture shares. Check out participating farms and sign up today to participate in the Luther CSA Reimbursement Program. The reimbursement will be handled through payroll this year. This program is jointly sponsored by the Health Care Fund, Wellness Program and Center for Sustainable Communities.

Grad Finale is 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m., Tuesday-Wednesday, March 13-14, in the Union.
