Paideia summer reading announced

The Paideia 111-112 planning committee is pleased to announce "The Odyssey," translated by Emily Wilson, as the 2018 summer reading. Wilson's new book—the first English translation of "The Odyssey" by a woman—has given us a reason to return to a favorite text. The main theme of "The Odyssey" is a homecoming theme: Odysseus and the other Greek heroes of the Trojan War are returning to homes that are very different from the ones they left. Their story includes many incredible adventures, while also prompting us to think about journeys and how we welcome the stranger at our door.

EDITORIAL COMMENT

And finally...

Wednesday, April 4, marks the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. King was in Memphis, Tennessee, April 3, supporting a sanitation workers strike. That evening, he gave a speech that seemed to foreshadow his death, titled "I've Been to the Mountaintop." Shortly after 6 p.m. on April 4, King was standing on the balcony of his motel room when he was struck in the next by a sniper bullet. He was pronounced dead an hour later. King was just 39.

"I've seen the promised land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the promised land. And I'm happy tonight. I'm not worried about anything. I'm not fearing any man. Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord." -Martin Luther King, Jr.
