Built into the class schedule and rhythm of life at Luther, chapel is a time for the community to gather for song, reflection and fellowship at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday in the CFL Main Hall. Faculty, staff, students and guests serve as speakers, musicians and artists.

Cathedral Choir to perform Homecoming Concert April 24

Cathedral Choir will perform a homecoming concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 24, in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall. The performance, part of Cathedral Choir's annual Midwest Tour, is open to the public with no charge for admission.

The 2018 Cathedral Choir tour program includes Ola Gjeillo's "The Ground," Jeffrey Ames's "Let Everything That Hath Breath" and Mozart's "Missa brevis in F" K. 192, accompanied by a string ensemble comprised of members from the Luther College Symphony Orchestra. Those unable to attend may view the concert live online at stream.luther.edu/music.

Philharmonia will present concert April 25

Philharmonia will perform a concert at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 25, in the Noble Recital Hall. The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Featured music includes Benjamin Britten's "Simple Symphony," Edvard Grieg's "Prelude from the Holberg Suite" and "Elegiac Melodies," Tchaikovsky's "Andante Cantabile for Strings" and Dvorak/Isaac's "Three Slavonic Dances." Luther to host Mark Borchardt biology colloquium April 26

Luther College presents a biology colloquium by Mark Borchardt titled "Cows or People? Sources of Fecal Contamination in the Karst-like Aquifer in Northeast Wisconsin" 9:40 a.m., Thursday, April 26, in Valders Hall of Science, Room 206.

The colloquium is open to the public with no charge for admission.      

In his lecture, Borchardt will explain how he uses viruses and gut bacteria to determine the source of bacterial contaminants in well water.

Luther to host Chris Kienke artist talk and gallery reception

Internationally renowned artist Chris Kienke will present an artist's talk regarding his exhibit "You Promised Me Poems" at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 26, in the Center for the Arts, Room 203. A gallery reception featuring Kienke’s works will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, April 27, in the Kirstin Wigley-Fleming Fine Arts Gallery in the Center for the Arts.

Kienke will give a slide presentation at the artist talk on how he arrived at his current work. Attendees will be able to follow his life journey from his undergraduate time at Kansas City Art Institute through a presentation of his artworks and influences over the years. 

Luther Ringers and Cantorei spring concert April 27

Cantorei and the Luther Ringers will perform a spring concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 27, in the Noble Recital Hall. The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission. Those unable to attend may view the concert live online at stream.luther.edu/music.

Cantorei will perform selections from a variety of genres, including "Confitemini Domini" by Alessandro Constantini; "O Vos Omnes" by Thomas Juneau; "If Ye Love Me" by Thomas Tallis; "Let All the World in Every Corner Sing" by Andrea Ramsey; "Tantum Ergo" by Gabriel Fauré; "Njoktje" by Frode Fjellheim; "Voice Dance" by Greg Jasperse; and "Will the Circle Be Unbroken," a traditional Appalachian piece arranged by J. David Moore.

The Luther Ringers' portion of the concert follows the theme "From Peril to Peace to Joy" taken from the first piece on the program. The piece was composed by 1971 Luther alumnus Lee J. Afdahl who serves as the director of music at First Presbyterian Church in Rochester, Minnesota.

Preview Day April 27

Luther College Admissions will hold a Preview Day Friday, April 27, to give prospective students an introduction to Luther. The day includes a campus tour, an academic department visit, a student activities and services fair, complimentary lunch in Luther's cafeteria, a financial aid session, a current student Q&A session, and a trolley tour of Decorah. Dirks performs Brudos Family Opera Prize Recital April 28

Emily Dirks '18, is the 2017-18 recipient of the Alan R. and Sally J. Brudos Family Opera Prize. As part of the award, Dirks will perform a recital at 4 p.m. Saturday, April 28, in the Noble Recital Hall. A reception will follow the performance. Both the recital and reception are open to the public with no charge for admission.

Dirks is the 16th recipient of Luther's annual Alan R. and Sally J. Brudos Family Prize for Opera Performance. The prize carries a $6,000 cash award and was established and funded by a gift from Alan R. and Sally J. Brudos of Atherton, California. Alan Brudos, a 1955 Luther graduate and regent emeritus, is former chair of the Luther Board of Regents.

Dancing with the Luther Stars April 28

Three Luther College staff members paired with three students from Luther's ballroom club go head to head in the annual performance of "Dancing with the Luther Stars."

Inspired by the popular ABC show, the event returns for the third season to bring excitement and friendly rivalry to the Center for Faith and Life at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 28. The event is sponsored by Luther College Ballroom and Swing, Student Senate and SAC Special Events.

Come sing with 29:11

College Ministries is hosting 29:11, a South African musical group, April 28-29. 29:11 is sponsored by New Hope International, a non-profit directed by Brendon and Gaylene Adams, known to many in the community through Luther's Gospel Choir. 29:11 is touring the US April-July 2018 to commemorate the 100th birthday of Nelson Mandela through their Reconciliation Exchange tour. Luther students and Decorah community members are invited to join Gospel Choir rehearsal with 29:11, Saturday, April 28, 3-5 p.m. in the CFL Recital Hall. 29:11 and Gospel Choir will lead worship at 10 a.m. Sunday, April 29, in the CFL Main Hall.

Juniors Natalie Delcorps and Rachel Schwabenbauer will give a viola and flute recital at 4 p.m. Senior Devin Hanggi will give a euphonium recital at 7 p.m. Senior Natalie Rumer will give a voice recital at 8:30 p.m.

Student recitals are held in the Noble Recital Hall (unless otherwise noted) and are followed by a reception. Recitals and receptions are open to the public with no charge for admission.

Creating Safe Space in the Music Classroom

Guest lecturer Joshua Palkki will address how gender stereotypes appear in choral classrooms as well as musical and social issues involving LGBTQ students in ensembles at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, April 29, in Valders Room 206.

French Film Series

The prize-winning film "Welcome" will be presented at 8 p.m. Sunday, April 29, in Preus Library's Hovde Lounge. The film tells the story of a young Iraqi-Kurd living precariously with other immigrants in Calais, France, and hoping to reach England and join his fiancée.

This semester, films in the series highlight interactions among people of different classes and ethnic groups. Presented in French, English, Kurdish and Turkish with English subtitles, all are welcome to attend.

Luther presents Lucille Stansberry Rosholt recital April 29

Luther College will host the Lucille Stansberry Rosholt Distinction in Accompanying and Collaborative Keyboard Performance Scholarship recital at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 29 in the Noble Recital Hall. The recital will be followed by an award ceremony and reception. The concert and reception are open to the public with no charge for admission.

Luther composition students present 'Metropolis' film score April 30

The classic silent film "Metropolis" will spring to life next week with a newly composed musical score by students at Luther. Directed by Brooke Joyce, Luther composer-in-residence and associate professor of music, the original film will be shown with their original electronic score at 9 p.m. Monday, April 30, in the Recital Hall of the Center for Faith and Life.

Community on the Commons May 1

Warmer weather must be coming! Gather with Luther friends for a root beer float at Bentdahl Commons from 5-6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 1, as a lead-in to the Ted Koppel event. Sponsored by the Center for Ethics and Public Engagement and the Center for Sustainable Communities. Ted Koppel to give Roslien lecture May 1

Longtime anchor of ABC News' Nightline, Ted Koppel, will give Luther College's 2018 Roslien Distinguished Lecture at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 1, in the CFL Main Hall. The lecture, "Science and Policy: Communication in the Twenty-First-Century World of Fake News," is open to the public with no charge for admission. A question and answer session will follow the lecture.

Faculty Artist Series: Michael Smith

Michael Smith will give a faculty tenor and bass trombone recital with collaborating pianist Du Huang at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 2, in the Noble Recital Hall of Luther's Jenson-Noble Hall of Music.

The recital is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Smith will perform both standard and non-traditional original works for trombone. Bass trombone selections include "Two Songs"by Spillman and the unaccompanied work"Sonata Breve"by Hartley. On the tenor trombone, he will play "Aria et Polonaise" by Jongen, "Elegie" by Rachmaninov and "Cryptical Triptych" by Ross.

Jazz Band to present concert May 3

The Luther College Jazz Band will perform their spring concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 3, in the CFL Main Hall.

The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission. It will also be available via livestream.

The concert program features "Cottontail" by Duke Ellington, a piece based on the same chords as Gershwin's "I Got Rhythm." The band will perform "The Peanut Vendor" by Cuban composer Moises Simons, "Tickletoe" by Lester Young and the swing ballad "Kids are Pretty People" by Thad Jones. Rounding out the concert, jazz band will also play a piece arranged by Al Cohn and jazz standards composed by Neal Hefti, Thelonious Monk and Charles Mingus.

Theatre department presents 'Marie Antoinette'

The Luther College Theatre Department will present David Adjmi's play "Marie Antoinette" at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 3; Friday, May 11; and Saturday, May 12; and 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 5, in the Jewel Theatre of Luther's Center for the Arts.

Dance department presents 'Soil Turning'

The Luther College Dance Department will present their spring show "Soil Turning" at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 4; Saturday, May 5; and Thursday, May 10, and at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 12, in Luther's Jewel Theatre in the Center for the Arts.

The performance is open to the public with no charge for admission.

With chart topping hits like "Take It All Back" and "Suit and Jacket," bluegrass-hip hop-rock band Judah & the Lion are touring the U.S. and will make a stop in Decorah to perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 5, in Luther's Regents Center. Doors open at 7 p.m.
