Ted Koppel lecture update
Reminder: The Ted Koppel lecture, "Science and Policy: Communication in the Twenty-First-Century World of Fake News,", will be held at 7 p.m. tonight in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall. The Community on the Commons event will be held rain or shine. Rain location is the CFL first floor lobby area.
College Resource Council nomination deadline May 18
The College Resource Council seeks a staff member with budget center responsibility to serve as one of two staff representatives to CRC. Appointed by the President, the staff representative will serve a three-year term. Marcia Gullickson and Jon Lund currently hold these positions. Jon's term expires at the end of the semester.
A staff or faculty member with expertise directly related to matters of diversity is also needed to serve on CRC as the term of Chris Garcia-Prats will also expire at the end of the semester.
The College Resource Council serves as a forum for the discussion and study of major college-wide issues. It provides an opportunity for representative members of the faculty and staff to serve in an advisory role to the administration and Regents of the College, especially in matters of long-range planning, resource allocation, and in the planning of the budget.
Please nominate an individual to fill this vacancy. Self-nominations are welcome as well. Send nominations to Sally Ming, <mingsa01>, by Friday, May 18.

Student Research Symposium
The Student Research Symposium is a full-day event held each spring to celebrate the vibrant intellectual life and learning at Luther.
Classes are suspended for the symposium, Friday, May 11, to allow all community members to participate. The Symposium highlights the best fruits of the scholarship, research and creative activity of students from disciplines across the college, and features:
- An opening plenary session, with festival music and examples of individual and collaborative research from this year
- Concurrent sessions throughout the day in the sciences, social sciences, humanities and arts, featuring oral presentations and performances, and offering opportunity for discussion with the presenters
- A short convocation to recognize academic excellence in the class of 2018
- A session dedicated to poster presentations, where the community can pause, ponder and converse with the students involved
- Presentations of the best research projects completed by first-year Paideia 112 students
- Evening events showcasing the performing arts
Reimagining Luther
A morning of training and workshops on race and inclusivity will be held Saturday, May 5, in Valders 206 and the Valders Pit. Keynote speaker is Okogyeamon, known professionally as Herbert Perkins, founder of the ASDIC Metamorphosis workshop.
The workshop, open to students, staff and faculty, is sponsored by the offices of College Ministries, Institutional Equity and Inclusion, and the Diversity Center. Vocation of a Lutheran College Conference
The Vocation of a Lutheran College Conference will convene July 16-18 at Augsburg College in Minneapolis. The 2018 theme is "Civil Discourse in a Fragmented and Multi-Religious Society." The Conference will explore civility in politically fragmented society, case studies on difficult conversations, challenges on campus, and civil discourse in multi-religious societies. Not quite free lunch

Seeking faculty and staff (current and retired) with extra room to store student belongings
Each year Luther students come from a great distance and one of the challenges they face is transporting their belongings back and forth for summer. We are looking for faculty/staff that have some extra room in a storage closet, basement or garage that would be willing to work with a student in storing their items for the summer. Those interested in helping should fill out this Google Form.
Hiring lifeguards
Luther Aquatic Center is hiring for summer lifeguards. Hours are typically mornings (7 a.m.-1 p.m.) with some afternoon/evening hours available. Lifeguards are required to be Red Cross Certified (training is provided for those who wish to become certified). Must be 18 years old. If interested contact Nicole, <kaupni01>, for an application.
Camping gear
New students at Luther will learn about the Driftless Region and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area this fall as part of an intercultural and outdoor immersion program called Endeavor Together. Since they come from abroad or afar, they don't have outdoor equipment. The Center for Sustainable Communities and the Diversity Center are seeking donations of gently used sleeping bags, camp pads and rain gear. No slumber party bags, please. Summer employment at Luther
Human Resources is accepting applications for summer employment from non-Luther students who are at least 18 years old. There are positions available in grounds and facilities services. Current Luther students will have priority consideration. Applications will be accepted from incoming first-year students, dependents of Luther employees, and members of the larger community. Please complete the 2018 Student Summer Application and return it to the Human Resources Office as soon as possible.

Book Shop News
2018 summer reading
Copies of the 2018 summer reading, "The Odyssey" translated by Emily Wilson, are now available for no charge at the Book Shop for faculty and staff who will not receive the book as part of their work with first-year students. The Paideia Governing Board and the Dean's Office invite all faculty and staff to join in conversation with the first-year class. The story of Odysseus' homecoming includes many incredible adventures, while also prompting the reader to think about journeys and how to welcome the stranger at the door.

Tuesday, May 1, in the CFL Main Hall from 7-9 p.m. the Book Shop will sell Ted Koppel's book, "Lights Out" with a signed Ted Koppel book plate. Bookplates are limited so get yours early before they run out.
May the Fourth Star Wars Book Shop party

Technology Help Desk Tip of the Month
Create better, easier passwords using paraphrases. Combine three or four random words with no other mental gymnastics required. Don't use personal info: no pets, family, favorite things, etc. These paraphrases are easy to remember and strong. To learn more visit luther.edu/helpdesk/tips/.

The Social Security Administration website has become more user friendly. Request a replacement card, apply for social security benefits, get a SS statement, appeal a decision, estimate future benefits, learn how to protect social security information from unauthorized use and more.
Mother's Day brunch
Start things off right on Mother's Day—by spoiling mom with a sweet and savory brunch buffet! Enjoy a fresh and innovative menu, loaded with favorites, that mom is sure to enjoy. Plus, the view in the Peace Dining Room is stunning. Pay ahead of time with the Box Office for Mother's Day Brunch; this makes a reservation enabling catering to be able to accommodate everyone.
Distracted Driving Awareness Month
Facilities Services would like to remind campus that April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is promoting awareness of this issue. Distracted driving is any activity that diverts attention from driving; such as navigation systems, cell phones, stereos, eating and drinking or just interacting with passengers. Please be aware of these distractions and work to limit them for the safety of everyone on the road.

Ted Koppel to give Roslien lecture May 1
Longtime anchor of ABC News' Nightline, Ted Koppel, will give Luther College's 2018 Roslien Distinguished Lecture at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 1, in the CFL Main Hall. The lecture, "Science and Policy: Communication in the Twenty-First-Century World of Fake News," is open to the public with no charge for admission. A question and answer session will follow the lecture.
Faculty Artist Series: Michael Smith
Michael Smith will give a faculty tenor and bass trombone recital with collaborating pianist Du Huang at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 2, in the Noble Recital Hall. The recital is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Smith will perform both standard and non-traditional original works for trombone. Bass trombone selections include "Two Songs" by Spillman and the unaccompanied work" Sonata Breve" by Hartley. On the tenor trombone, he will play "Aria et Polonaise" by Jongen, "Elegie" by Rachmaninov and "Cryptical Triptych" by Ross.
Jazz Band to present concert May 3
The Luther College Jazz Band will perform their spring concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 3, in the CFL Main Hall.
The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission. It will also be available via livestream.
The concert program features "Cottontail" by Duke Ellington, a piece based on the same chords as Gershwin's "I Got Rhythm." The band will perform "The Peanut Vendor" by Cuban composer Moises Simons, "Tickletoe" by Lester Young and the swing ballad "Kids are Pretty People" by Thad Jones. Rounding out the concert, jazz band will also play a piece arranged by Al Cohn and jazz standards composed by Neal Hefti, Thelonious Monk and Charles Mingus.
Theatre department presents 'Marie Antoinette'
The Luther College Theatre Department will present David Adjmi's play "Marie Antoinette" at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 3; Friday, May 11; and Saturday, May 12; and 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 5, in the Jewel Theatre of Luther's Center for the Arts.

Dance department presents 'Soil Turning'
The Luther College Dance Department will present their spring show "Soil Turning" at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 4; Saturday, May 5; and Thursday, May 10, and at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 12, in Luther's Jewel Theatre in the Center for the Arts.

'Caring For Each Other Better: Technology and Faith' May 4
Deanna Thompson, author, speaker and professor of religion at Hamline University will share how, after a stage IV cancer diagnosis, she moved from skeptic to supporter of technology's ability to help connect people in meaningful ways. Her latest book, "The Virtual Body of Christ," argues that digital technology plays an important role in helping us care for one another. The lecture, at 4 p.m. Friday, May 4, in Valders 262, is sponsored by the CEPE and the Religion Department.
Norsemen and Aurora present concert May 4
Norsemen and Aurora will present a concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 4, in the CFL Main Hall. The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Aurora's portion of the concert features music from around the globe including the complete "Gloria Kajoniensis" by Hungarian composer Gyöngyösi Levente, from which Aurora performed the first movement at Christmas at Luther. They will also perform "Northern Lights" by Latvian composer Ēriks Ešenvalds and an adaptation of the Zulu folk song "Vela, Vela." The choir will premiere a work by Nicholas Ryan Kelly that they recorded for publication titled, "Children of a Dream."
Norsemen will perform works by Franz Schubert, Sten Källman, Gwyneth Walker and George Mead. Collaborating with the choir is a student brass quintet coached by Rebecca Boehm Shaffer, adjunct faculty.
Judah & the Lion to perform May 5
With chart topping hits like "Take It All Back" and "Suit and Jacket," bluegrass-hip hop-rock band Judah & the Lion are touring the U.S. and will make a stop in Decorah to perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 5, in Luther's Regents Center. Doors open at 7 p.m.
Tickets for the performance are $40 and can be purchased at tickets.luther.edu or via the Luther Ticket Office, 387-1357 or <boxoffice>.

Saturday, May 5
Junior Benjamin Ostrem will give a saxophone recital at 2 p.m. Senior Allison Johnson will give a voice recital at 4 p.m. Senior Jenny Woods will give a voice recital at 7 p.m.
Student recitals are held in the Noble Recital Hall (unless otherwise noted) and are followed by a reception. Recitals and receptions are open to the public with no charge for admission.
Tanzanian Maasai Warrior to lecture on Pastoralism and Conservation
Killing’ot Lembikas will present, "When Pastoralism Meets Conservation: Challenges to the Maasai Way of Life." Sunday May 6, 7 p.m., Valders 206. Lembikas has worked with Luther students and faculty as a cultural guide and interpreter for J-Term programs in Tanzania. He will explain the role of pastoralism in Maasai culture and how conservation reserves pose a challenge to the Maasai livelihood with emphasis on the violence surrounding land conflicts near his home area.
Saq Nadeem to present business story
Saq Nadeem, class of '98, 2013 Illinois Small Business Person of the Year and founder of Paradise 4 Paws, shares his views on entrepreneurship and the pet industry at 6:30 p.m. Monday, May 7, in Olin 102. P4P has been featured in the New York Times, USA Today and The Today Show. Called one of the "Coolest Businesses in America" by Business Insider, P4P has been profiled in Business Week, Chicago Tribune, and more.
Luther to host violinist Fangye Sun
Fangye Sun, violin, will perform a guest recital at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, May 10, in the Noble Recital Hall. The performance is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Collaborating with Sun, colleagues Casey Robards, piano, and David Tressel, cello, are also featured in the recital.
The repertoire for the performance includes "Air for Violin and Piano" by Kevin Puts, "Fratres for Violin and Piano" by Arvo Pärt, "The Stream Flows for Solo Violin" by Bright Sheng and Trio for Piano, Violin and Cello in A minor, Op. 50 by Tchaikovsky.

Position opening
Full-time floater custodial position: The floater custodian fills in for both academic and administrative buildings. General custodial responsibilities include overall appearance of assigned academic and resident hall building(s). Hours will generally be Monday through Friday with some weekend work required. Must be able to work with little supervision, complete work thoroughly and promptly, and be self-motivated. Valid driver license required. High school diploma or equivalent preferred but not required.

Hours will generally be 4-10 p.m. Monday through Friday. Must be able to work with little supervision, complete work thoroughly and promptly, and be self-motivated. Financial Aid administrative assistant: .75 FTE, six-hour-per-day, benefit eligible Financial Aid Administrative Assistant. The Administrative Assistant is responsible for the coordination, certification and reconciliation of all private student loans. This person will be responsible for the creation and mailing of award letters, reconciliation of funds, and processing state program files. A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Associate's degree with coursework in Microsoft Office Suite, business practices, keyboarding and office procedures preferred. General knowledge of financial aid process is helpful.
Web content fellow: .92 FTE, 11-month, non-renewable. Responsibilities include managing the Web Content Bureau, which is the group of six to seven student workers that helps maintain the Luther website and online advertising for the college. The fellow will assist with web content tasks such as reviewing and improving websites and training new users. Additional potential duties include planning, monitoring and content work within the college's social media platforms including Snapchat, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS
Music department faculty members, Spencer Martin, viola; and Nicholas Shaneyfelt, piano; performed recitals in Berlin, Germany, and at the European Viola Forum in Poznań, Poland, April 16-19. In addition to the recitals, Martin delivered a lecture and taught viola master classes for the students at the Ignacy Jan Paderewski Academy of Music in Poznań.
Using anecdotes from her personal life to encourage readers to become actively engaged citizens and human beings, Amy Weldon has released a new book, "The Hands-On Life: How to Wake Yourself Up and Save the World." Released in late February 2018, the book is available from major retailers, wipfandstock.com and the Book Shop.
Sean Burke delivered the Center for LGBTQ and Gender Studies in Religion's Eleventh Annual John E. Boswell Lecture at Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, California on April 19. The title of the lecture was "Reading the Bible with the Eunuchs."
