ANNOUNCEMENTS
College Resource Council nomination deadline May 18
The College Resource Council seeks a staff member with budget center responsibility to serve as one of two staff representatives to CRC. Appointed by the President, the staff representative will serve a three-year term. Marcia Gullickson and Jon Lund currently hold these positions. Jon's term expires at the end of the semester.
A staff or faculty member with expertise directly related to matters of diversity is also needed to serve on CRC as the term of Chris Garcia-Prats will also expire at the end of the semester.
The College Resource Council serves as a forum for the discussion and study of major college-wide issues. It provides an opportunity for representative members of the faculty and staff to serve in an advisory role to the administration and Regents of the College, especially in matters of long-range planning, resource allocation, and in the planning of the budget.
Please nominate individuals to fill these vacancies. Self-nominations are welcome as well. Send nominations to Sally Ming, <mingsa01>, by Friday, May 18.

Student Research Symposium
The Student Research Symposium is a full-day event held each spring to celebrate the vibrant intellectual life and learning at Luther.
Classes are suspended for the symposium, Friday, May 11, to allow all community members to participate. The Symposium highlights the best fruits of the scholarship, research and creative activity of students from disciplines across the college, and features:
- An opening plenary session, with festival music and examples of individual and collaborative research from this year
- Concurrent sessions throughout the day in the sciences, social sciences, humanities and arts, featuring oral presentations and performances, and offering opportunity for discussion with the presenters
- A short convocation to recognize academic excellence in the class of 2018
- A session dedicated to poster presentations, where the community can pause, ponder and converse with the students involved
- Presentations of the best research projects completed by first-year Paideia 112 students
- Evening events showcasing the performing arts

Retirement open house

Fiscal year end approaching
The end of the fiscal year is approaching. Remember all supplies, materials, etc., must be received by Thursday, May 31, to be expensed to a fiscal year 2017-18 budget. Outstanding travel expense reports, original invoices, supporting purchase orders and purchase permits or account adjustments should be sent to the Office for Financial Services by Friday, June 8 to be included in FY 2017-18 budget. Please, no faxed copies. Items for deposit must be sent to the Office for Financial Services by Friday, June 1. Thanks for helping OFS close out the year in a timely manner.

Friendship Families needed

2018 summer reading
Copies of the 2018 summer reading, "The Odyssey" translated by Emily Wilson, are now available for no charge at the Book Shop for faculty and staff who will not receive the book as part of their work with first-year students. The Paideia Governing Board and the Dean's Office invite all faculty and staff to join in conversation with the first-year class. The story of Odysseus' homecoming includes many incredible adventures, while also prompting the reader to think about journeys and how to welcome the stranger at the door.

Vocation of a Lutheran College Conference
The Vocation of a Lutheran College Conference will convene July 16-18 at Augsburg College in Minneapolis. The 2018 theme is "Civil Discourse in a Fragmented and Multi-Religious Society." The Conference will explore civility in politically fragmented society, case studies on difficult conversations, challenges on campus, and civil discourse in multi-religious societies. Seeking storage
Each year Luther students come from a great distance and one of the challenges they face is transporting their belongings back and forth for summer. We are looking for faculty/staff (current and retired) that have some extra room in a storage closet, basement or garage that would be willing to work with a student in storing their items for the summer. Those interested in helping should fill out this Google Form.
Hiring lifeguards
Luther Aquatic Center is hiring for summer lifeguards. Hours are typically mornings (7 a.m.-1 p.m.) with some afternoon/evening hours available. Lifeguards are required to be Red Cross Certified (training is provided for those who wish to become certified). Must be 18 years old. If interested contact Nicole, <kaupni01>, for an application.
Camping gear
New students at Luther will learn about the Driftless Region and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area this fall as part of an intercultural and outdoor immersion program called Endeavor Together. Since they come from abroad or afar, they don't have outdoor equipment. The Center for Sustainable Communities and the Diversity Center are seeking donations of gently used sleeping bags, camp pads and rain gear. No slumber party bags, please. Middle school athletic performance clinic informational meeting
An informational meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Monday, May 14, in Regents 218 for middle school parents and athletes who are interested in a weekly middle school summer athletic performance clinic. Jeff Jones will lead an overview and answer questions about learning the basics of strength training, speed development and overall development of athleticism.

Special baptismal celebration
Join College Ministries to celebrate the baptism of Menzi Nkambule '18 and Joseph Tiegen '18, Sunday May 13, 9:30 a.m. at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 701 Iowa Ave. We will not have Sunday morning worship on campus on May 13 so that the Luther community and Good Shepherd can celebrate this special day. Norsemen will provide special music. Joseph and Menzi are applying for candidacy to become ELCA pastors with Good Shepherd serving as their home congregation. Students can either walk to Good Shepherd, just a few blocks from the CFL, or get a van ride from the CFL beginning at 9 a.m. on May 13.

'Children of War: Creating Roads to Peace'
Luther students Belal Krayem '18, Mohammed Aljadart '19, and Jam Riyan Hamza '21, each grew up in areas of the world wracked by conflict. In this roundtable at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 9, in Olin 102, they will share how their experiences shaped them, and discuss their hopes for their home countries. Moderated by Kim Chham '21. Griesheimer to speak at Luther Emeriti Colloquium
Discussing the many talents of English cleric and composer Edward Finch, Luther Professor Emeritus of Music James Griesheimer will present a program at 3 p.m. Thursday, May 10, in the Baker Village commons.
The presentation "Edward Finch (Polymath of England, Early 18th Century)" is open to the public with no charge for admission. Griesheimer will discuss the life and legacy of Edward Finch, the fifth son of the First Earl of Nottingham, who distinguished himself in simultaneous careers as cleric and composer.
Theatre department presents 'Marie Antoinette'
The Luther College Theatre Department will present David Adjmi's play "Marie Antoinette" at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 11; and Saturday, May 12 in the Jewel Theatre of the Center for the Arts. Adjmi's contemporary take on the life of the young queen of France highlights the ideals and pressures of society in 1776 that shaped Marie Antoinette's historical image as a frivolous woman.

Dance department presents 'Soil Turning'
The Luther College Dance Department will present their spring show "Soil Turning" at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 10, and at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 12, in Jewel Theatre in the Center for the Arts. Choreographed by Andrea Vazquez-Aguirre, visiting assistant professor of dance, the show "Soil Turning" is inspired by exploring the identities of thirteen performers including a social activist, a philosopher and cultural theorist and a writer.
The performance is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Luther to host violinist Fangye Sun
Fangye Sun, violin, will perform a guest recital at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, May 10, in the Noble Recital Hall. The performance is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Collaborating with Sun, colleagues Casey Robards, piano, and David Tressel, cello, are also featured in the recital.
The repertoire for the performance includes "Air for Violin and Piano" by Kevin Puts, "Fratres for Violin and Piano" by Arvo Pärt, "The Stream Flows for Solo Violin" by Bright Sheng and Trio for Piano, Violin and Cello in A minor, Op. 50 by Tchaikovsky.
Spring opera performance
Performing a comedy of errors that touches on the themes of infidelity and betrayal, the Luther College Music Department will present Mozart's opera "Così fan tutte" at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 11, and Saturday, May 12, in the Main of Hall of the Center for Faith and Life.
Tickets for the performance are $15 for adults and $8 for children 12 and under. They can be purchased online at www.tickets.luther.edu or via the Luther Ticket Office, (563) 387-1357 or [email protected].
There will also be a pre-concert lecture given by Kat Beane Hanson, adjunct faculty in music, before both performances at 6:30 p.m. in the Recital Hall of the Center for Faith and Life. The lecture is open to the public with no charge for admission and will include student performances of excerpts from the opera.
Luther student composition recital
Luther College's composition studio will perform a student composition recital at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 13, in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Hall of Music.
The recital is open to the public with no charge for admission. The recital will feature original works from the Luther composition studio.
The studio recently composed music for Luther's productions of "Soil Turning" and "Marie Antoinette," as well as an original score for the silent film "Metropolis."
Luther art majors present group exhibit May 14-27
At the culmination of their studies, Luther College senior art majors present a gallery exhibit of their collective works May 14-27 in the Kristin Wigley-Fleming Fine Arts Gallery in the CFA.
The exhibit represents the diverse interests and skills of the student artists, including drawings, paintings, graphics, collage and mixed-media works, photography and installation pieces. Work is selected and curated by the Luther art faculty.

Position opening
Full-time floater custodial position: The floater custodian fills in for both academic and administrative buildings. General custodial responsibilities include overall appearance of assigned academic and resident hall building(s). Hours will generally be Monday through Friday with some weekend work required. Must be able to work with little supervision, complete work thoroughly and promptly, and be self-motivated. Valid driver license required. High school diploma or equivalent preferred but not required.
Custodial position: .75 FTE. General custodial responsibilities include overall appearance of assigned academic and resident hall building(s) and public areas. Hours will generally be 4-10 p.m. Monday through Friday. Must be able to work with little supervision, complete work thoroughly and promptly, and be self-motivated. High school diploma or equivalent preferred, but not required.
Multimedia Strategic Fellow: The Multimedia Strategic Fellow participates on the User Services and Multimedia teams within Information Technology Services to assist the Multimedia Lead in promoting and supporting the effective uses of video, audio, textual, graphical and other electronic media in support of teaching, learning, research and administrative purposes. Supervisory responsibilities include daily management of the multimedia ticket queue and multimedia student staff productivity. This is a one-year, full-time position that will overlap by approximately one month with the incoming Multimedia Strategic Fellow.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS
Junior Rebecka Green '19 from Decorah, Iowa, won a scholarship essay contest through the organization "Tolerance Means Dialogues" with her essay, "Seeking Intentional Pluralism." Her essay posits tolerance as something that should be the first, bare minimum step on the path to creating a society that is intentionally pluralist.
Gregory Peterson presented a solo recital on the Richard D. Moe Organ Series at Pacific Lutheran University, Tacoma, Washington, on April 8. PLU is home one of the most significant pipe organs in the US, built by Paul Fritts in 1998. In February he was a guest recitalist at Como Park Lutheran Church, St. Paul, Minnesota.
Sophomores Anna Luber '20, Robert Muller '20 and Zachary Ziarnik '20 will travel to the ancient Roman site of Caesarea, with Associate Professor of Classics Dan Davis, to conduct a new archaeological excavation from Wednesday, May 9 to Saturday, June 2.
Norma Hervey spoke on the events of 1968 in the United States with background on preceding events and ongoing consequences.
Sophomore Joshua Burniece won the 2018 Rosholt Distinction scholarship in Collaborative Keyboard Performance Sunday, April 29, in the amount of $1,250. A sophomore music major with a concentration in piano performance, he performed a piano recital featuring Richard Strauss's "Allerseelen," George Frideric Händel's "Piangerò la sorte mia" and Dmitri Shostakovich's Sonata in D minor, Op. 40, 2nd movement.

Sunday, May 13, is Mother's Day which can be traced back to ancient Greeks and Romans as they held festivals to honor the mother goddesses Rhea and Cybele. Another link to our modern Mother's Day is the early Christian festival of "Mothering Sunday" in which the faithful would return to their "mother church" for a special service.
