Reminder: Campus meeting today

2018 Peace Scholars
The Center for Ethics and Public Engagement is pleased to announce the Luther College Peace Scholars for 2018: Rebecka Green '19, and Max Eness '20. Rebecka and Max will join other Peace Scholars from the U.S. in Lillehammer, Norway, for a weeklong workshop at the Nansen Center for Peace and Dialogue. They will then spend five weeks participating in the International Summer School at the University of Oslo. Congratulations to them both!
Move out day parking restrictions
To help facilitate closing of the residence halls the college will restrict parking on High Street, from Koren to Center Street, staring at 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 22, until 9 p.m. Thursday, May 24. The faculty/staff parking along this section will be converted to a loading zone only during this time period to allow better access to those moving out of Brandt. In addition, we are asking that faculty/staff not park in the small lot south of Ylvisaker and east of the CFL on Thursday, May 24, so those moving out of Ylvisaker may utilize this space.
Hazardous materials pick-up
Environmental Services will conduct a campus hazardous materials pick up in the near future. Contact Leah, 387-1136 or <benzle01>, by May 22 with requests for hazardous material pick up.
Steam shutdown
As a reminder the annual steam shutdown is planned for the afternoon of May 27 through May 31. A limited number of buildings will have hot water and some HVAC systems will be cooler than usual. Please contact Facilities Services, <facilities>, with questions.
Stay late registration
The Residence Life office is preparing a list of students who will remain on campus between 7 p.m. Thursday, May 24, when the residence halls close, and Sunday, May 27.
By Friday, May 18, please send Vanessa Wiest the names of students authorized to stay for work, commencement weekend events, or athletics. We ask that the following information is included: student name, ID number, and reason the student is staying.
All students will be required to check out of their rooms no later than 6 p.m. Sunday, May 27. Summer housing room assignments begin on Tuesday, May 29, for students who have registered ahead of time to live on campus during the summer.
Early arrival registration
Use this form to register any student who needs to be on campus after Aug. 10. This includes student athletes, student workers and members of an organization that has business in August 2018.

Library books due May 18
May 18 is the due date for books checked out from the Main Stacks by faculty and staff on or before Sunday, May 13. Books checked out by faculty and staff may be renewed online or by e-mailing <library>. The new due date is Dec. 7, the last day of classes for the fall semester. Books that have already been renewed three times (two years) will not be renewed again; rather you will need to bring these books in physically to the circulation desk to have them checked in and then out again to "re-start the clock." Fiscal year end approaching
The end of the fiscal year is approaching. Remember all supplies, materials, etc., must be received by Thursday, May 31, to be expensed to a fiscal year 2017-18 budget. Outstanding travel expense reports, original invoices, supporting purchase orders and purchase permits or account adjustments should be sent to the Office for Financial Services by Friday, June 8 to be included in FY 2017-18 budget. Friendship Families needed

Vocation of a Lutheran College Conference
The Vocation of a Lutheran College Conference will convene July 16-18 at Augsburg College in Minneapolis. The 2018 theme is "Civil Discourse in a Fragmented and Multi-Religious Society." The Conference will explore civility in politically fragmented society, case studies on difficult conversations, challenges on campus, and civil discourse in multi-religious societies. Seeking storage
Each year Luther students come from a great distance and one of the challenges they face is transporting their belongings back and forth for summer. Residence Life is looking for faculty/staff (current and retired) that have some extra room in a storage closet, basement or garage that would be willing to work with a student in storing their items for the summer. Those interested in helping should fill out this Google Form.
Hiring lifeguards
Luther Aquatic Center is hiring summer lifeguards. Hours are typically mornings (7 a.m.-1 p.m.) with some afternoon/evening hours available. Lifeguards are required to be Red Cross Certified (training is provided for those who wish to become certified). Must be 18 years old. If interested contact Nicole, <kaupni01>, for an application.
Football work study positions
Norse Football is looking for students interested in filming practice and games as part of their work study (multiple positions). This is an opportunity to be a part of the program and even travel with the team while getting paid through the work study program. The duration of these positions will be roughly mid-August to early November. Most work will be performed outdoors. Hours will be primarily afternoons with some time adjustments for morning sessions. Students who might be interested should contact Chris Clift, <clift>.
Camping gear
New students at Luther will learn about the Driftless Region and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area this fall as part of an intercultural and outdoor immersion program called Endeavor Together. Since they come from abroad or afar, they don't have outdoor equipment. The Center for Sustainable Communities and the Diversity Center are seeking donations of gently used sleeping bags, camp pads and rain gear. No slumber party bags, please. Middle school athletic performance clinic informational meeting
An informational meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 17, in Regents 224 for middle school parents and athletes who are interested in a weekly middle school summer athletic performance clinic. Jeff Jones will lead an overview and answer questions about learning the basics of strength training, speed development and overall development of athleticism. Congratulations to Luther softball (38-8) who is hosting the University of St. Thomas (35-6) in a best-of-three-game series May 18-19. The winner of the Super Regional will advance to the NCAA III National Championships that will take place at the USA Hall of Fame Complex, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, May 24-29.

Luther art majors present group exhibit May 14-27
At the culmination of their studies, Luther College senior art majors present a gallery exhibit of their collective works May 14-27 in the Kristin Wigley-Fleming Fine Arts Gallery in the CFA.
The exhibit represents the diverse interests and skills of the student artists, including drawings, paintings, graphics, collage and mixed-media works, photography and installation pieces. Work is selected and curated by the Luther art faculty.
Jazz Orchestra and Concert Band showcase concert
The Luther College Jazz Orchestra and the Luther College Concert Band will perform a spring showcase concert at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 26, in Luther's Center for Faith and Life Main Hall.
The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission. Those unable to attend may view the concert live online at stream.luther.edu/music.
Luther's Jazz Orchestra will perform several works, featuring Luther's Vocal Jazz in the latter part of their concert portion. Jazz Orchestra, conducted by Juan Tony Guzmán, will perform Roger Myers' "Burbank Sackbut Brigade," "The Eighth Veil" by Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn, and Ellington's "Blue Cellophane." Student soloists include Pablo Gómez-Estévez '17, and juniors Christopher Lange Pearson, Jackson Churchill and Thomas Perkins.
The Luther College Concert Band, directed by Joan deAlbuquerque, will perform Karel Husa's "Music for Prague," Percy Grainger's "Handel in the Strand," Bach's "Who Puts His Trust in God Most Just" and John Phillip Sousa's "Stars and Stripes Forever."
Symphony Orchestra and Nordic Choir showcase
The Luther College Symphony Orchestra and Nordic Choir will present a spring showcase concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 25, in the Main Hall of the Center for Faith and Life on Luther's campus.
The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission. Those unable to attend may view the concert live online at stream.luther.edu/music.
The Symphony Orchestra portion of the program features "Blumine" by Gustav Mahler, "Parto, Ma Tu Ben Mio" from "La Clemenza Di Tito" by Mozart and "Russian Easter Overture" by Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov.
Nordic Choir will perform "Singet Dem Herrn Ein Neues Lied" by Bach, "Why Rage Fiercely the Heathen" by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, "Portones Abiertos y Rostros Brillantes" by Paul Basler, "Afternoon on a Hill" by Eric Barnum, "Let the River Run" by Carly Simon, and "O Lord God" by Pavel Chesnokov.
Ultra Mega Mega student showcase May 18
Luther College art, dance and theatre students will present their work at the Ultra Mega Mega showcase 6-9 p.m. Friday, May 18, in the Center for the Arts. Ultra Mega Mega is the end of the term open house for studio courses in Luther's Visual and Performing Arts Department. At 6 p.m. dances will be performed in CFA Studio One and starting at 7 p.m. theatre performances will take place in Jewel Theatre. Students will display work from art courses and perform solo and group dance pieces, monologues and short acting scenes throughout the evening.

Position opening
Multimedia Strategic Fellow: The Multimedia Strategic Fellow participates on the User Services and Multimedia teams within Information Technology Services to assist the Multimedia Lead in promoting and supporting the effective uses of video, audio, textual, graphical and other electronic media in support of teaching, learning, research and administrative purposes. Supervisory responsibilities include daily management of the multimedia ticket queue and multimedia student staff productivity. This is a one-year, full-time position that will overlap by approximately one month with the incoming Multimedia Strategic Fellow.

ARTICLES, CREATIONS, HONORS
Sophia Engelman, assistant director of Residence Life, is the recipient of the 2018 College of Liberal Studies Graduate Student Academic Achievement Award and the 2018 Graduate Student Academic Achievement Award from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.
The CLS Graduate Student Achievement Award recognizes five students who demonstrate evidence of scholarly accomplishment beyond the completion of outstanding degree coursework. The Graduate Student Academic Achievement Award recognizes one graduate student across all colleges who demonstrated evidence of scholarly accomplishment beyond the completion of outstanding degree coursework. She will be inducted into the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse chapter of Golden Key International Honour Society.
This May and June, Luther professor Dan Davis will take two different groups of Luther students on excavations: Robert Muller '20, Anna Luber '20 and Zachary Ziarnik '20, will accompany Davis to Caesarea, Israel, where they will help launch a new, multi-year excavation, and Collin Carpenter '19 and Alex Aakre '19 will help Davis with artifact processing in Southern Greece.
Todd Green's paper from Luther College's Reformation Day Symposium has been published in the Occasional Paper Series of the University of Denver's Center for Middle East Studies. The title of the paper is "Seeking the Muslim Martin Luther: Against Calls for an 'Islamic Reformation.'" The paper is available online.
Emeriti Mark Z. Muggli and Diane Scholl and College Archivist Hayley Jackson, members of the Decorah Historic Preservation Commission, will present the annual Historic Preservation Award to five Charles Altfillisch homes on Thursday, May 17, City Hall Council Chambers, 5 p.m., with light reception to follow. Altfillisch designed a dozen of Luther College's buildings.
Deborah Gover, Rachel Storlie, Edwin Andereck, Andrew Whitfield, Carol Hester, Julie Knox, James Griesheimer, Julia Wharton, Philip Wharton, Marjorie Wharton, Arthur Cohrs and William Kuhlman will perform at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 20, at Grace Episcopal Church as part of its 150 anniversary year celebrations. The concert features works by Bach, Dvořák, Prokofiev, Purcell and others, and is open to the public with no charge for admission. A free will offering will be taken.
Todd Pedlar, professor of physics, received a three-year renewal of his grant from the National Science Foundation for "Heavy Quarkonium Spectroscopy at Belle and Belle II" (NSF Award #1807007), in the amount of $178,507, supporting research work for him and Luther students members of the Belle and Belle II Collaborations, international groups which operate an experiment at KEK, the national high energy physics laboratory in Japan. He and his student researchers are engaged in a continuing study of the strong nuclear interaction using bound states of the bottom quark and its antiquark partner using data taken from 2000 to 2010. They are currently involved in commissioning of the new Belle II detector system which has begun operations in a new data taking period, slated to run through 2025 or later.
Holly Moore, associate professor of philosophy, and Ana López '19, recently attended the annual meeting of the Ancient Philosophy Society at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, where Moore presented her work, "Platonic Epagōgē and the Purification of the Method of Collection."
Storm Bailey presented a paper, "The Problem of Exclusivism in 'Interfaith' Work," at the Open-mindedness in Philosophy of Religion conference at Weatherford College, Weatherford, Texas, April 7.

Congratulations to all the high school track and field participants competing in the State meet Thursday-Saturday, May 17-19.
Darin Svenson, KDEC AM/FM sports director, will cover the events and report on athletes from all schools in the KDEC listening area. Svenson will report results of area girls and boys events in all classes beginning in the 10 a.m. hour on both KWLC 1240 and FM 100.5. In addition, expanded coverage from state includes blogs, video interviews and more on the KDEC website.
