Commencement speaker
BJ Nichols, Luther alumnus and partner at Ernst & Young, will give the commencement address. Nichols, a native of Decorah, was a staple on campus as he was growing up. He graduated from Luther in 1997 with a bachelor's degree in management and Spanish. He received his Master of Business Administration from Babson College in 2004.
He currently works in the Insurance and Federal Claims Services sector for Ernst and Young helping companies and governments recover financially following catastrophic loss. Most recently his work has taken him to the Caribbean to assist with recovery efforts following hurricanes Maria and Irma in 2017. A frequent speaker and writer on complex business interruption and property damage claims, Nichols also teaches courses on financial modeling, economic damages and lost profits.
Move out day parking restrictions
To help facilitate closing of the residence halls, the college will restrict parking on High Street, from Koren to Center Street, staring at 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 22, until 9 p.m. Thursday, May 24. The faculty/staff parking along this section will be converted to a loading zone during this time period to allow better access to those moving out of Brandt. In addition, we are asking that faculty/staff not park in the small lot south of Ylvisaker and east of the CFL on Thursday, May 24, so those moving out of Ylvisaker may utilize this space.

Fiscal year end approaching
Outstanding travel expense reports, original invoices, supporting purchase orders and purchase permits or account adjustments should be sent to the Office for Financial Services by Friday, June 8 to be included in FY 2017-18 budget. No faxed copies. Items for deposit must be sent to the Office for Financial Services by Friday, June 1. Thanks for helping OFS close out the year in a timely manner.
HR updates
New Medicare card
Medicare and Medicaid Services are sending new cards with new Medicare numbers to everyone with Medicare. Instead of Social Security Numbers, the new Medicare card will include a new unique number. This will help to protect against identity theft and protect Medicare from fraud. Medicare will automatically mail a new card to the address on file with Social Security. As long as the address is up to date, there's nothing that needs to be done. If the address needs to be updated, go to Social Security online. There is more information available on the HR website.
Shingles shot
Shingrix is a new Shingles shot that is covered at 100 percent (both the administration fee and the serum) at the doctor's office for those age 50 and over. The following pharmacies cover it at 100 percent as well: Walgreens, Rite Aid, CVS, Safeway and Target. Other pharmacies would be considered out-of-network, which would still cover the vaccine but at a lower level of benefits. HR has been told Donlan and Walmart pharmacies also cover it 100 percent on the Luther health plan. The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices has not recommended Shingrix for individuals ages 49 and younger.
Cable television changes
Beginning June 1, Luther will no longer provide cable television in individual student rooms on campus. Cable will continue to be provided in key, public areas on campus including social lounges in residence halls, Legends Fitness Center, Marty's and several other locations. This change is being made due to several factors including the changing nature in which students consume media and the institutional cost for providing cable. With more students using streaming-based services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu or connecting to specific providers such as ESPN through an existing cable television subscription, it makes more sense for Luther to invest savings from this change into our wireless network which has been stressed over time with this transition to streaming services. Students provided feedback in decision making process via the Campus Life Committee. This summer, ITS is investing more than $160,000 to make improvements to the campus wireless network. This include upgrades in Miller and Dieseth Halls (including Brunsdale Lounge), Brandt Hall, and the College Apartments.
Students who wish to acquire a cable television package will be able to subscribe directly with Mediacom. At the beginning of the fall semester, a Mediacom representative will be on campus to answer questions from students and/or to receive subscription requests.
June wellness screening
During 2018, employees and spouses covered by the Luther College Health Care Plan have additional wellness benefits and requirements. Sign up for the Thursday, June 5, blood screenings with Winneshiek Medical Center here on campus by visiting the website for more information. There will be no blood draw in July on campus and we will resume Aug. 28. Contact <wellness>, with questions.
